Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

I don't buy the ego trip/prima donna argument. I find it hard to believe these guys dress and don't want to win.

I agree too. But there is also something to having a physical component to one's game.

On a different not, as for those saying recruiting is an issue, I heard an interview on ESPN radio today that I thought supports my argument that it is too difficult when getting commitments from sophmores in High School to predict how well they will develop. They were interviewing a Packer linebacker (? - I am blanking on his name.) His Dad played for the Browns and coached him in HS. His Junior year, he didn't even start on the HS team. He had to walk-on in college and play himself into a spot. By the time he left college he was a first round draft pick. That is why, #1 - I say Lucia can't be blamed completely for under-performing kids, given how differently they develop and how early choices are made on players -2 - why a coach should take the player he thinks will be most talented (as opposed to people who talk about taking grinders/position players- who, if they don't reach their potential, won't even make the team). If all the players were playing to the level that they were projected to be at this point, it would be a pretty special team and there wouldn't be many people calling for a change in recruiting strategy. Now there may be some merit to the comments saying Lucia lost some of his ability to motivate, but his history at CC and MN makes me think players are responsible too.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Gophers sweep. Too much talent and I hope pride left for them to flush the season down the toilet.
Here's MN's second half WCHA schedule:
UND
SCSU H/H
@UAA
off
@DU
CC
@UMD
UW

To say they've got their work cut out for them to get home ice in the playoffs is an understatement - only one of their remaining series is against a team below them in the standings, and that also happens to be on the road.

That's a brutal last four weekends of the season.

UND Split
SCSU H/H Gopher Sweep
@UAA Gopher Sweep

@DU Denver Sweep
CC Split
@UMD 3 points
UW Split

That's 17 points right there, boys! Gotta love it! :D

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

I was not impressed with the win last night. The Gophers were not finishing checks or putting MTU away even with all multiple scoring chances they had. I saw very few occasions where Gopher players were going to the net. Barely beating the last team in the league is not very encouraging.

The teams they could potentially play over the next 5 games have only 11 combined W's out of 55 conference games played. If the Gophers can't sweep these teams (NMU may give a fight) it's just another example of the Gopher's inconsistency. If they do, it will give them a bit of much needed confidence for the second half.

MTU 2-11-0
Bowling Green 2-9-2
Clarkson 1-5-2
NMU 5-5-3
Harvard 1-5-2

I look at the situation a bit more holistically. The coaches (Lucia and Hill) seem to have lost the charismatic edge to motivate and create a high enough morale and energy on the team. Players of this caliber typically will respond well to strong charismatic leadership.

But the player's response regardless should be if your going to live a dream by wearing the "M" then take responsibility for it and give 110% for 60 min. every game in a season...period.

IMO Hill needs to walk. I've never felt good about the buddy-buddy alliance he has with Lucia either. I'd much rather see a tougher asst. that can motivate than a guy like Hill who fits more the mold of a HS guidance counselor with double the salary. I'll never forget after he coached the UND series last year and Hill kept basically stating his incompetence to handle a head coaching job for a weekend by telling the media "It's Don's team" and "Don and I are real close". Talk about a toxic professional relationship.

Those are 4 desperate pts. and a BIG help right now.

Sitting in 7th place looks bad, but 7 pts separating the top 7 teams at the end of the first half really says something about the talent spread across the WCHA.

If the Gophers had won just two of the Fri. night disasters they'd be sitting tied for fourth place right now. Every little and extra effort like a blocked shot, not missing an open net, finishing a check, consistently going to the net, etc. can make a difference and affect the WCHA standings at the end of the day. I guess it goes to show that in the WCHA every game counts in the standings and deserves an all-out effort. It should an interesting race to the finish line.

Any word on Birkholz? I know he didn't make the trip to Tech and was hoping it was just precautionary and nothing serious.

According to the Poles, The Gophers are indeed the worst NCAA Division I Men's Hockey team in the state. Stupid Beavers. Even we managed to beat Kato once.

Mn is now listed as #25 in the PWR, and #15 in the krach. the brutal SOS in the wcha is really helping the non wcha schools again this year in PWR. they cannot lose to any more low ranked teams, if they want to salvage this season.

They need to finish off the 6 game sweep.

Tech - Complete
Holiday Classic (Pending)
Harvard - (Pending)

That will give them a winning record against the CCHA, and against the ECAC which will help. It's too late to fix the CHA thing, at least it was a split.

Since I am admittedly very lazy, can someone tell me what the WCHA record is versus other conferences? I assume pretty good given the comment above. Either that, or the NCAA really does automatically give bonus points just for being a WCHA team (as they should) regardless of how the league is doing.

24-12-2 (.658) winning percentage, thanks to MSUM sweep of BSU last weekend.
