Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Now, as the level of competition quickly amps up, the Gophers will need to come out firing on all cylinders - right from the opening faceoff ...
I'm not sure that's who this team is. Look at their results through the season. A typical score after 20 minutes is 0-0, 1-0, or 1-1. They are a little like a heavyweight boxer that is probing early and starts trying to knock you out in the middle rounds. They tend to reserve a cylinder or two for the second period, and if need be, they give a little more gas in third period.

When the athletics department media staff puts together the highlight video, I can see them taking the video starting 10 seconds before the first of four-goal flurry and letting it run mostly intact, only removing the SCSU timeout but no other editing.

The Gophers are fully taking advantage of the opponent's long change in the second period. Or maybe it's the fact the Gophers have the short change into the offensive zone.

Strategy didn't work the last time they lost. They aren't playing St. Cloud anymore this season.

I hope they have the video. I tried to watch the four goals today and the 2nd two were missing!

There were cameras from a couple of local TV stations set up on either side of me, and the operators were getting antsy in the second period as they needed another highlight and had to leave to cover another event. Davis scored to make it 3-0. SCSU calls time out, and they start packing up. Then here comes Brandt alone and with Menefee for the two shots they'd been there to capture. Timing is everything in life.

Strategy didn't work the last time they lost.
I'm not saying it's a strategy, more like their DNA. I don't expect that they'll come out like it's a mid-November game, but other teams know how to play defense, and sometimes you have to wear them down before the holes open up. After the last 80 odd games, I'm not going to proclaim that the sky is falling.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Just doing a short internet search the only reference I could find to fastest four goals by one team is here:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_record_for_the_fastest_four_goals_in_a_hockey_game

That source says the Boston Bruins set the NHL record in 1945 with four goals in 1:20.

There is also a YouTube video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57lC6vI-txQ

of the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots of the Ontario Junior Hockey League getting four in 1:15 to set a record in that league.

Good analogy. I just hope that if and when they employ the "probing early strategy" against a Clarkson or a B.C. they don't find themselves too far behind on points, so that scoring a knockout becomes the only way to win!

I'm not saying it's a strategy either. Figure of speech. Nor am I implying the sky is falling. I'll stand by an assertion that DNA is dangerous going forward against the opponents you're likely to face.

The last loss to UND is a fairly good indicator of what can transpire against a more potent offensive team...and that was in complete absence of any sloppiness like I thought I saw early vs. St. Cloud on Saturday.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I'm not sure I would characterize it as sloppiness. I must have said "one pass too many" a half dozen times in the first period last night (I'll have to check with the boss, but I am pretty sure I said it out loud every time). I doubt I said it again after the first period. It is as if they practiced passing all week and then went into the locker room after the first period and some one said "just shoot it".

Don't know about others opinions but I wasn't really talking about anything inside the Husky blueline.

It seemed like each of those extra passes ended up giving the Huskies an offensive opportunity, though.

Once summer arrives (assuming it ever does), wander around until you find a hornets nest. Poke it with a stick a few times. When the swarm of hornets comes out, try dodging them while staying in close proximity to the nest. It will take some time before they sting you enough times such that you lose your will to live. That's what I envision playing the Gophers to being like. Whatever else they are, they are a bunch of pests. But they aren't like a bear, that if poked with a stick can destroy you with one blow of a paw and a quick coup de grâce. If hornets suddenly start trying to act like a bear, they may not be very good at it, so I'd rather they just keep swarming.

The mistakes are always there. As Joel Johnson says, "Hockey is an imperfect game played by imperfect people." Fans are just less concerned by them once we are up three goals.

My concern per this post season specific discussion is more influenced by my own expected quality of opponents and potential costliness of those mistakes that are going to happen.

I'm not going looking for any **** hornets nests. :)

And I always thought the Huskies were the pests and the Gopher the bear!!

Sorry I missed you today ARM. I was at Ridder early, and they told me there wasn't a game today . . . and to the U of M fans, quit worrying, your team will be just fine. Good luck the rest of the way.

I hope they have the video. I tried to watch the four goals today and the 2nd two were missing!

Anybody know about this? I went back and tried to watch this sequence also, and it is missing. It goes from Sarah's goal to a St Cloud PP and Fitzgerald is already in the net replacing Friend. The missing sequence would be nice to see.????
