Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

After the weekend, it would be great to get a quick start and get one up on the board early.

We did that in last year's quarterfinal versus NoDak and BC did it to BU yesterday. I'm going to remain in the camp that thinks it's not how you start but how you finish, even if I'm the only one in it.

Starting fast, scoring first has always sounded like, and been presented as a pretty significant positive factor by coaches, players, broadcast commentators etc. I'd hope for a fast start and being first on the board as well.

One and done now so it can come down to both how you start and finish.

Scoring first is important, but it's the "scoring" part that's important, not the "first" part. The main reason that such a high percentage of teams that score first win is because the definition of "winning" is scoring more goals than the other team. If you score more goals than the other team, the odds of any particular having been scored by you is automatically greater than 50%.

If you look at it that way, the distribution of which team scores which goal ends up looking almost entirely random. If a team wins a shutout, there's a 100% chance that they scored the first goal. If it wins 2-1, they scored first about 67% of the time. If they win 3-2, they scored first about 60% of the time. If anything, there's a slightly stronger correlation between scoring the second goal of the game and winning percentage as long as you remember to discard games that finish 1-0.

This year the Gophers are 8-1-1 when they allow the first goal. Granted, that means that they're 28-0 when they score first but there's still no reason to be all that uncomfortable if they go down 1-0.

I hope the Gophers start slow, get behind and have to battle back to win. We good?

Lot of people in this forum seem motivated to completely suck every ounce of enjoyment had per discussion to include fairly simple, inconsequential comments and observations.
Lighten up, Francis.

One of the Darwitz/Wendell era teams was something like 8-0 when the opponent scored first.

Sure, we all like to see the team do well. Personally, I think that a good start defensively is more key to this team than a good start offensively.

ARM...I think we've discussed face to face the reality that history and what happened in the past means less to me than it does to you when it comes to current and impending contests. I seemingly give less weight to what prior teams did...how previous series played out...history etc. than you do when contemplating the present. Just the way it is and a difference between our points of view.

I'm not giving weight to that. I just threw it out there as a bit of trivia. Two years ago, a good start was important to that Minnesota team. The current club gets better as the game goes along, so I see it as less dependent on its start, but I'm not trying to suck the fun out of anything. :D

For those that want to watch the Gopher women at the White House live: http://www.gophersports.com/blog/2014/03/watch-live-gophers-visit-white-house.html

Has anyone heard what happened to the first invitation (according to Frost's comments before the Friday game, the invitation got lost somewhere between the WH and the team and they first learned of it Thursday, when someone contacted them to see if they were coming)? It sounds like everyone but Noora was going to be able to make it.

Thanks for the link.

Maybe the initial invite went to Cory Hall and he is more concerned with U of Maryland these days? Anyway, leave it to the Feds to take a year to recognize an accomplishment and not be able to figure out where to send an invite in all of that time.

So, the week before they are hosting in the NCAA quarter finals they have to jet to the East Coast for the afternoon? That's a pretty busy day off before prepping for a very important game:eek:

They had to leave early a.m. yesterday. So they bus back from Bemidji, go to the airport, and then I presume get back very late tonight. For some reason when Frost said what an honor it was to go meet the President, his face didn't convey the same enthusiasm for the trip. ;)

I suppose if they chartered, they could bring their equipment and practice at the Caps practice arena.

Were the Olympians who were a part of the team last year go as well?

I suspect a purposeful tactic by the White House per some Boston area large campaign contributors.

True. Still often scoring first can change the feel of a game. Especially in tight checking playoff games. Having said that, the ladies seem comfortable when coming from behind as well.
