Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

The absence of hardly any chat regarding the upcoming playoff series with the Gophers v. Huskies speaks volumes of the state of SCSU women's hockey. This certainly isn't criticism of U of M fans--in fact, what would the discussion be?

It is this fan's opinion/hope that St. Cloud State's AD Heather Weems will take a careful look at the future of SCSU Women's hockey.

In the meantime, it is my wish that the Women Gophers again run the table. They deserve it. OTOH, that wish is certainly NOT directed at the men's team in the fabricated "Big Ten" ("little six") league . . . :)

I really hope they find a way to become more competitive, just like their men's program was able to do, initially under the direction of Herb Brooks. And I would hate to see your hope to have the AD "take a careful look at the future of SCSU Women's hockey" turn out to be a case of "be careful what you wish for" as I know that finances in her department have been an issue.

My discussion would be, "Is The Boomer attending the games this weekend?"

The 1st round WCHA games have tended to be tough sells attendance-wise. I'll be there both games. I'm hoping to see at least 3,000 for the weekend, although I think that's optimistic.

You figure this one's done in two eh?

Sorry, I do.

Famous last words………….slap me upside the head!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Might number of minutes played not have some bearing on those stats? And I would expect the coach would try to limit the minutes of having his freshmen D out there against the opponent's No. 1 line...

Captain Obvious :)

it's what you make of the opportunity you are given
and one of those players has a +/- of +25, you don't get that from the bench

Scuttlebutt I hear is that St. Cloud is seriously thinking about dropping their football program and pushing basketball to D-I status. I know they would save a ton of money if they did since football is hemorrhaging money. Students had to agree to an activity fee increase to save football two years ago.
Don't think they would consider dropping women's hockey as they try to stay Title IX-compliant. But then again, if they drop football, maybe this would allow them to dump a woman's program too -- like hockey.

They just spent a lot upgrading the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. It would seem odd to then axe one of the building's tenants.

Well keep us updated on the SCSU situation. As someone who lives hours away from the Twin Cities, having to only go a short distance to see the games the Gophers play in St Cloud is a blessing and for women's hockey in general it would be sad if any current team dropped their hockey. The question I guess would be if SCSU sees Women's hockey as just a title IX issue and doesn't care whether the womens team wins or not, or if they are trying to get better, but just aren't succeeding?!

Talk about dropping the football program at SCSU was an item a year ago. I don't believe it is an issue now. VERY hard to drop Women's hockey because of Title IX. A very complicated procedure. No, the women's program will stay. My question has more to do with whether or not Jeff Giesen's contract is renewed. It is up after this season. It appears obvious to all who watch/read/hear about this program that it is in dire straights. Four or five wins a year is an embarrassment to the school and the hockey program. Bemidji, North Dakota and Mankato all will finish above the Huskies.

No, I won't be going to Ridder for the playoffs. The men's team is hosting North Dakota--two FIRST place teams fighting for the NCHC title.

If there is a game Sunday, yes, I will be there!

I see the Big 10 is taking credit for women's hockey medals at Sochi: http://www.gophersports.com/blog/2014/02/big-ten-totals-20-medals-at-2014-olympics.html I'll just bite my tongue...

Absolutely amazing feat for the Big 10 in its first year of existence in men’s and women’s hockey, don’t you think? And I’m sure we all appreciate the superb Big 10 tv coverage of the women’s hockey teams this year to showcase all that talent. [Sarcasm intended.]
