Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I am very happy to have this game to look forward to seeing on TV from the comfort of my couch in New Hampshire!

In these parts (way west of New England! ;) ) the game is being televised on Fox College Sports Central (FCSC) at 7:00pm Central. I'll be at Mariucci this evening but my DVR is set!

GO GOPHERS - RAH! :)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I agree that UND is less of a rival in the mind of the typical Gopher fan than Wisconsin and UMD. That isn't true for the players. For half of this year's team, North Dakota is the only program that's ever beaten them in their Minnesota careers. The upper classes on this team may think of Wisconsin a big quicker as a rival, but for the younger players, North Dakota is at least an equal to the Badgers in that regard. Nobody on the current team has experienced the Bulldogs as a champion, so that rivalry may have taken a step back in their eyes. If Wisconsin is rivalry No. 1 for the players, then UND is at least No. 1A.

More on the Gophers-UND rivalry in today's Star Tribune.

“They’re probably pretty mad at us for that [triple-overtime loss], and we’re pretty mad at them for ending our streak,” Terry said. “So there’s extra fire for both teams.”
That’s extra fire for what was already Minnesota’s most heated women’s hockey rivalry.

I read Terry's comments in the strib and stand corrected. ARM totally nailed it. As far as the players are concerned this IS a rivalry game. That's good enough for me. I am now looking forward to a RIVALRY game.

UND wins the first period in every aspect except goals scored. Congratulations to UND for an all time record crowd of 5,835. Gophers win in all aspects from then on.

Except in the post game.

UND produces both a TV wrap up and a post game player and coach interview totaling about 8 minutes.

Gophers produce Coach Frost for 35 seconds on Facebook.

UND Record. Don't go getting all insecure on us.:D

(Remember when I said I only missed one game that whole year? Ironically, it was 'Fill The Bowl'. Had a family thing that night. I'm *really* looking forward to 'Fill The Bowl 2014' against the Gophers. Don't know if we'll break 12,400, but it should be fun.)

I disagree. The story of the first period was that both teams were good in their offensive zone and shaky in their defensive zone. And I thought the Gophers spent more time in the offensive zone than otherwise. All told, my take on the first period was that the Gophers were shaky but that it was pretty even in all respects, because UND was shaky at times, too. As is often true, the Gopher shot totals are a bit misleading because of the number of times they have a great play that ends up in a pass just missed that, had it connected, would have been an easy goal.

From there it was complete domination. It's tough to say whether Minnesota really fixed their problems in their defensive zone because they emphatically demonstrated that the best defense is played 150 feet or more from your goalie. Regardless, they controlled the game. I'm not sure that they dominated to the extent that it should have been a 5-1 final, but 3-1 or 5-2 would definitely describe the game adequately.

Leveiile was solid except for one moment in the second period where she coughed up a puck that UND should have buried but didn't. The power play was dominant and the 3-3 results on it were indicative of the performance.

I have a long standing belief that assists are awarded in the wrong way and as evidence I'll hold out the Meghan Lorence goal in the second period. The assists were given to Brandt and McMillen (both of whom had great games) but the key to the whole play was the way that Maryanne Menefee drove through the crease and pulled the UND defenseman with her, giving Lorence a gift-wrapped opportunity to bury the puck against a helpless goalie.

Getting primed with a replay. Lorence goal was fairly sweet. Great to see Schipper bury a couple too.

The rematch...

Let's Go Gophers!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Well, I did post the number I had.

I apologize if I misunderstood your premise. I thought you were trying to determine who contributed the most to winning. The stats that would tell us that are not posted anywhere that I can find. I suspect the coaching staff can tell us how many times an opposing player has come down the ice and had the puck taken away without even getting off a shot. Blocked shots tell you how many times an opposing player got off a shot that did not make it on net. Saves tell you how many times an opposing player got off a shot but did not score. Turnovers don't tell the story, because I think that number counts the times a team dumps the puck for a line change.

So, find me that stat that tells how many times each player prevented a shot with a poke check or by back-checking or by muscling the opponent off the puck and I will buy your premise.

I did, +/- and how often a player is on the ice when a goal is scored on your team tells you that.

Ultimately the game is about putting the puck in the opponents net and keeping it out of yours.

BTW, if anyone is upset their favorite Gopher is low on the list for keeping the puck out of the Gopher goal, take heart, that still puts them above 95% of the rest of the players on other teams. UND only has one player with a +20, Wisconsin has none.

Through 20 minutes last night, the reason that more pucks didn't wind up in the Minnesota net was mainly thanks to #29. A few others were turnover machines. Inevitably, it is a team game, and a teammate has to pick you up when you make a mistake.

I am not the person keeping track of or counting, that is what every team does, I was merely looking at the data.

turns out my original numbers were wrong, I was counting the 10/26 Bemidji game twice

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

The Gophers played a solid game tonight. They weren't spectacular but they didn't have to be. North Dakota had no jump in their game and played like a team that expected to lose. I assume this has a lot to do with the players they are missing but once the Gophers got the first goal I never felt like they were in any danger of losing. It will be interesting to see how the Whioux do next week in Duluth, who are also missing Olympians.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Congrats to the Gophers, an impressive sweep.

5,800 attendance is really impressive for UND...and is probably really good for women's hockey. I almost feel bad that it was such a lopsided outcome...and that the next day shots were 42 to 18. Well OK...I don't feel bad really.
