Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season
Butters was simply astounding until that four goal Gophers' outburst, which didn't start until there were only 6 minutes left in the second period. By then Butters had roughly 25 saves, many of them coming on nice Gopher plays that looked like sure goals. There was one that to me looked like it should have counted, coming on a solo rush by Bona where she nearly split the Mavericks' D on her toe-drag move, but was hauled down before being able to get off a clean shot or deke. But the puck still found its way to the back of the net, yet they ruled it a no-goal...not sure what the explanation was. There were many other situations where the Gophers had excellent close-in looks, but missfired. Honestly they should have scored at least a half-dozen times during that 30 minute stretch when they were held scoreless. Part of that was Butters outstanding play; the other half was on the Gophers' forwards who were unable to bury the puck when they had the opportunity. You knew it was a matter of time, but given the lopsided play I thought it took them too much time to get rolling, and I was beginning to wonder. When the pucks finally started going in you could see that the Mavs - or at least many of them - were getting more and more demoralized, and even with a whole period left you knew it was over. Coach Frost must have known this as well as everyone who was dressed got a lot of minutes in the 3rd period, which was good to see.
Any eyewitness reports on today's game beyond what was available from Dan's play-by-play and the live blog? It seemed like it was just a matter of time until pucks started going in leading up to the four-goal burst.
