Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Any eyewitness reports on today's game beyond what was available from Dan's play-by-play and the live blog? It seemed like it was just a matter of time until pucks started going in leading up to the four-goal burst.

Butters was simply astounding until that four goal Gophers' outburst, which didn't start until there were only 6 minutes left in the second period. By then Butters had roughly 25 saves, many of them coming on nice Gopher plays that looked like sure goals. There was one that to me looked like it should have counted, coming on a solo rush by Bona where she nearly split the Mavericks' D on her toe-drag move, but was hauled down before being able to get off a clean shot or deke. But the puck still found its way to the back of the net, yet they ruled it a no-goal...not sure what the explanation was. There were many other situations where the Gophers had excellent close-in looks, but missfired. Honestly they should have scored at least a half-dozen times during that 30 minute stretch when they were held scoreless. Part of that was Butters outstanding play; the other half was on the Gophers' forwards who were unable to bury the puck when they had the opportunity. You knew it was a matter of time, but given the lopsided play I thought it took them too much time to get rolling, and I was beginning to wonder. When the pucks finally started going in you could see that the Mavs - or at least many of them - were getting more and more demoralized, and even with a whole period left you knew it was over. Coach Frost must have known this as well as everyone who was dressed got a lot of minutes in the 3rd period, which was good to see.

Saw a lot of the fourth line during the third period, including on a power play.

As for the goal that was waved off, the call was that the net had come off its moorings before the puck crossed the goal line. Very close play.

Gopher players have now gained such weekly recognition 12 times. Eight different players have been honored, and what I find a bit surprising is than not once has it been the country's leading scorer, Hannah Brandt.

I've heard she is too slow to win anything.

On a more serious note, how lucky are we that the National team did not take her? Maybe she would have beaten out an incoming Wisco frosh, and that might be the difference between first and second in the standings.

you gotta remember that the original team was picked by a commitee that is responsible for the development and expansion of hockey in the US, I still maintain Stone could have picked the final team at the conclusion of last years season and it wouldn't look any different than it does today, at best one or two different players, the extras were window dressing to keep the various regions happy, Stone knew who she wanted all along

Looking forward to my first trip to Ridder in a few years on Saturday night. Heading up to St. Paul tonight for the North Star Cup, then Twins Fest tomorrow, capped off with GWH in the evening.

Should be one helluva weekend!

The crowd filled in nicely as the first period progressed but I personally think the announced attendance of 2,157 is a bit padded.

Listed in the box score but not ever on the bench and never appeared in the game? Anyone have any information about that?

The three veteran D must have taken about 3/4 of the total D minutes. The other three D who played D appeared mostly as the partner of one of the three vets, although Garzone and Cline got out there as a pairing a fair number of times.

I thought it was a nice move by Frost to not allow Lorence to leave the ice over the last couple of minutes as a succession of her team mates tried to get her the hat.

I also thought the tunnel video bombing by Davis as that new "personality" tried to interview the number one star of the game was a lot of fun.

I assume you mean Megan Wolfe. I don't know anything but she was out for warmups but not the game.

I don't think it was that disproportionate, though I thought Cline and Garzone got more time than Burns.

Wolfe wasn't feeling well. I agree with Eeyore that the blue line minutes weren't that disproportionate. Although the vets get most of the time during special teams. There was a a shift when it was 4-on-4 where Davis, Brandt, and another forward (Menefee or Bona I think) were out with just one D.

As I see it there are two ways to look at the way the second half of the season has started. You can be encouraged that we've outscored the opposition 22-2. Or you can be worried that we're winless in games where we allow more than zero goals.

That was a tough game to draw any conclusions from. Even before the parade of penalties in the third period (all of which I thought were perfectly good calls) the Gophers were playing sloppy. Terry, Burns and at least one other player missed wide open nets. There were a lot of bad passes and a lot of dump ins that hit a St. Cloud player and didn't get in deep. The St. Cloud power play is the least threatening force since Graziani's troops occupied Sidi Barrani so it's hard to complain about the penalties too much so long as they don't become a habit.

Watching live I thought Ramsey had a very frustrating game. She had some great shots on goal and quarterbacked the power play well. On the other hand, she was responsible for a lot of those failed dump ins and made some lazy plays in the defensive zone. I've criticized her a lot because I just don't see her improving in the ways I'd like. On the gripping hand, after the game I was talking with a friend and he opined that Ramsey is on the ice constantly and he thinks that she's out there for some extremely long shifts and what I'm seeing is the result of fatigue. Since I value his opinion it's certainly something I'll keep in mind and watch for going forward. It's not like I haven't previously expressed my opinion that Brad Frost doesn't trust his depth enough.

Mostly I think the team needs to play a series against a team it actually fears so I'm looking forward to the trip to Grand Forks next week.

I thought some of that was thanks to SCSU. The Huskies did a better job last night of getting a stick into the play at the last second and disrupting an attempt, as opposed to like that first game in January when OSU got caught watching a lot down low.

Remember that Wolfe was out this weekend, and she has been one of the top four D for the last couple of months, so that will impact the rotation. In terms of rolling the D, that is often Joel Johnson's call so the complaint for that might be misdirected. Northeastern has been playing well of late, and the Huskies are down to four D. I don't think Ramsey is fatigued. I do think when there are too many penalties in a row, all the PK and PP personnel get overused. This is an area where all coaches, not just Minnesota coaches could improve. They admit that the players were worn down by too many special teams and the same kids being on the ice. Well, then they should figure out rotations such that those normally not on special teams have a role. That was something that the team did when Coach O was here and I though was wise. Don't overwork a few kids and act like it is out of your control. As for Ramsey, my wish is that she'd hit the net more on her shots from the point. If so, she would be much more dangerous on stop. I don't know if she is looking for a redirect on some of the shots and it doesn't happen, or if she has to shoot where she does to avoid putting it off a shin pad, so it might not be all on her.

Mostly I think the team needs to play a series against a team it actually fears so I'm looking forward to the trip to Grand Forks next week.
I sure hope they don't fear UND. Respect fine, but the Gophers should have confidence against anyone. But I know what you are saying; UND has players that can hurt them if they are sloppy, which I agree, they were at times this weekend.

Okay...I've seen Kate Flug make several strong drives to the net now with some nifty moves yet stonewalled each time thus far. Be nice to see her get rewarded soon. Confident she can be a consistent scorer at this level similar to others contributing to the balanced scoring.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Frost: “She’s (Brandt) one of those [players] like Kessel who can finish at a high rate but prefers to make a great pass instead of a great shot,” Frost said. “Something for her that she’s had to figure out is to shoot the puck a little more.”

what Tuco has to say about talking and shooting could be said of passing & shooting:

For those not traveling to Grand Forks it appears the regional FOX Sports channel will be televising the Friday game...according to my on screen guide.
