Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

It's a shame the Big Ten couldn't find a time slot to televise one of the MN v WI games this weekend.

So is this going to be a first one to 2 goals wins each game?

As ARM posted earlier BTN will at least televise one of the games on a tape delay basis on the 18th (9AM I believe). So, better than nothing.

As we know in the game of hockey there are no sure things, but I think for any team to be the first to score two the odds would be heavily in their favor - and of course the later in the game a team reaches two, the better their odds of winning. It would be interesting to go back and look at the history of these two teams, and see what the percentages really are.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

The crazy thing is that this weekend series with Wisconsin should be getting a lot more attention. Even the Gopher Women's Hockey program itself is focusing on the team's current 16 game unbeaten streak vs what I think is a far greater accomplishment. Granted winning 62 games in a row is always going to make a bigger splash in a sport like Women's Hockey, but I personally think that the Gopher Women's Hockey teams current 42 game ROAD winning streak is even more impressive.

the streak is alive! :)

(Badger fan here, just back from the game to say mostly nice things :-)

Great effort by the Badgers, better one by the Gophers. Gophers were really good at closing down 'time and space' in their D-zone, and it kept the Badger forwards from doing things they'd normally do.

My one complaint with the officiating - and is it not an insignificant one - is that the whole sequence that led to the Gophers' third goal was offside. Gopher number one held the puck just outside the blue line waiting for Gopher number two to touch up. But just when Gopher number two did touch up, Gopher number three stepped across, before Gopher number one advanced across the blue line. The lineswoman (not Fitz) was on the other side of the ice, with other traffic in front of her, so maybe that's why she missed it. But she missed it. And five seconds later, the Badgers were down 3-2.

Other than that, great game. Congrats to the Gophers for clinching WCHA regular season title.

Just watched it on replay.

Camaranesi crosses the line, cuts towards the center of the ice, the puck comes back out.

AR's arm goes up, delayed off side signaled. Brausen corrals the puck on the blue line and dumps it towards the boards, back into the zone. The puck is in the zone but based on the reaction of everyone, including the Badgers, they all hear the AR calling out "off, off". All 3 Gopher forwards come back across the blue line, clearing the zone. When they are all outside, AR's arm comes down, at that point the play is good. Camaranesi has neared the Wisconsin bench side of the ice at this point but now turns back towards the offensive zone.

No Badger is near the puck which is still inside the Badger zone near the boards on the non-bench side.

Brausen reenters the zone and picks up the puck near the boards, hard to tell from stream but it appears she is looking at the AR as she does so, slight hesitation but no question the AR's arm has come down.

Brausen cuts towards the middle, drops the puck back towards the boards where Ramsey is arriving with a full head of steam.

Camaranesi is coming hard on the left wing behind the nearest Badger D, Ramsey finds her.

BTW, hearty congrats to the coaches and team on another WCHA regular season title.

I went for a run just now, and was thinking about it all during...

I was sitting five or six rows up and a seat or two goal-side of the blueline/board intersection in question; that is, no more than twenty feet away. I guess *maybe* the puck went behind the boards from me and I'm assuming Brausen was holding it a fraction longer that she did (but then again, video cameras are 'up over my left shoulder' and would likely have had the same problem. I don't have access to video, and don't want to spend $ just for this.) Are you able to see the puck the entire time on video? They sometimes have a view longways down the boards, did the replay use that view?

Anyway, live through my 'Cardinal-colored glasses' it surely looked offside to me. Thanks for taking a look, and responding, etc.

Robert,

I have Gopher All Access during the women's hockey season. In addition to live coverage the service archives games after they have been played and the package I have already purchased allows me access to those archived games.

The camera view for most of the game and for this particular sequence is from high above and from near the red line on the non-bench side, just as you describe it, up over your left shoulder. The puck is in clear view for the entire duration of this sequence of events.

The puck comes out, gets bumped a bit and then is dumped towards the boards just inside the blue line. It seems likely to me that the puck passed out of your view at that point as it approached what would have been the boards in front of you.

The Gopher forward who last possessed the puck outside the zone and who dumped it towards the boards (Brausen) hears the call from the AR and dips outside of the line while continuing to skate towards the boards. When she dips back inside the puck is still waiting there for her. Likely all of this time from where you were sitting you could see her from the waist or so up. She didn't have the puck. After all three Gophers have tagged up she dips back into the zone to reclaim possession. It's all very visible on the video.

Congratulations to UW and its team and fans for tonight's 14,000 seat sell out. That's a great and significant accomplishment.

Go Gophers.

Not trying to be argumentative here, but if the puck goes to that nearside board, it cannot have been visible on camera "for the entire duration" either. My angle (what I described is my just-about-always spot) and the camera's angle for that aspect aren't all that different.

Capacity used to be 15,325 but for some reason the UW-UM mens game last Saturday set a new Kohl Center record at 15,359. Not sure what "sell-out" tonight will mean, in terms of a number. But I'm looking forward to it (with a slightly altered outcome of course). Tonight I'm fourth row, just off center, behind the players' benches. So look for me, I'll be the one wearing red. :-)

Back in a few minutes, it will take me a bit to get the video cued up to that sequence again.

Camera angle is steep enough that when players are against the boards on near side they are visible down to about knee level.

Cameranesi carries down the right wing boards, the puck is poke checked away at the blue line towards the center of the rink. This occurs right at the blue line, the puck never actually enters the zone, the Gopher player does. Brausen picks it up and skates towards the boards in possession carrying the puck into the zone, her left skate is across the line, Cameranesi is clearly still off side, the AR raises her arm (and presumably begins the call out). Brausen lets the puck go and dips back outside. The puck rebounds off the boards and is clearly in camera view for all of the rest of the scene (until it goes behind Rigsby).

Brausen is back on side, she skates past where the puck is and turns back towards the AR, crossing the blue line and looking at the AR whose arm is now down ( and who is presumably now calling out "good"). She picks up the puck, drops it to the fast closing giant defenseman and you could see the rest.

I don't have a frame by frame viewing capability, but I did run it through with pause-play, pause-play, pause-play getting as close to frame by frame as I could. You are correct that the puck does rebound off the boards, briefly out of view but only very, very briefly. It is clearly in view at the moment when all three Gophers are clearly back outside the blue line and the AR lowers her arm.

I also add that I very much appreciate your civil tone in what has to be a disappointing moment for a Badger fan.

Well, then I guess I'm back to 'Cardinal colored glasses' etc. Thanks.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

To clarify a couple of things -

The seats that were for sale are 800 under capacity, because they're doing an organized student section this year. How many students show up? It's impossible to predict. You'll have plenty of men's hockey fans who show up, and probably even more who don't. There are often many, many groups of students who don't usually go to hockey games who do show up. I was at the Fill the Bowl game in 2012, and there was a varied combination of students, and since it was a free-for-all seating-wise, many found other places to sit in the arena. I'm really hoping the students have a strong showing, but we won't know until people actually start entering the building.

I'm fairly certain that the extra handful of seats added to the capacity are the suites behind the student section in the 100 level, which were added for the 2012-13 season. Before, it was just audio/video control rooms.

Tonight will be a nightmare for ushers in the upper levels.

Gopher fans don't have a lot to say in the wake of a win in front of thousands and thousands of Badger fans. I guess it has already been said. Anyway, nice effort Gophers, one and all.

I was going to post something similar a little earlier. But obviously a tremendous effort by the Gophers to sweep No. 2 Bucky on the road this weekend. Their 4-0 victory in front of 13,000+ hometown fans at the Kohl Center definitely meets the definition of a "statement win" and the entire Gopher team is to be congratulated!

Both teams came out tonight playing very cautiously for almost the first two periods. I thought the Gophers pushed the action a bit more but both sides were trying to avoid mistakes.

Once the Gophers got ahead by two they just clamped down and suffocated the Badgers. The backchecking in the third period was ferocious and Wisconsin just couldn't get anything going.

The refs didn't call anything either way until late in the third period. It worked out fine for a while but as the game wore on the play started to get dangerous. At some point they needed to start calling the bodychecking but never really did.
