Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Gopher fans don't have a lot to say in the wake of a win in front of thousands and thousands of Badger fans. I guess it has already been said. Anyway, nice effort Gophers, one and all.

My question for you guys is 'how does a team that talented get tied by Ohio State, and lose to UND, and give up three goals to St Cloud, and to Bemidji... twice?" They're able to focus better when it's Wisconsin?

I have the same question. There's really no doubt the rodents are the class of the ncaa's again this year. It sure looks to me like the rodents have wrestled the top dog dynasty status from UW after their great 06-11 run. I tip my hat but fart in your general direction.

To restate your question - Why is a talented MN team not undefeated this year? Gee, I don't know.....maybe because it is difficult to do.....

Congrats to MN on clinching the WCHA title.

Wisconsin is a great team, and the Gophers have brought total focus to those games. I loved watching the Gophers play so well. Those were two excellent games this weekend!

By and large the 2013-2014 Gophers have maintained pretty good focus throughout. My theory is that Ohio State, NoDak, St. Cloud and Bemidji can play their hearts out, be competitive and give anyone a game on a particular night. As well as all having goaltending that can have great nights. Minnesota seems to get WCHA opponents A games often enough. Ohio State likely comes down to one questionable on ice decision at a key point. I know SCSU fans don't like the premise...but there were a few key contributors missing from the lineup in St. Cloud if I recall. Ask OSU and SCSU fans and they'll speak highly of their teams effort in those games. Most justifiably in my opinion. I think NoDak had all their guns when they broke the streak. They put some serious pressure on Minnesota from the get go in that one and caused some turnovers in the Minnesota D zone...as best I can recall. They definitely came out strong after being unhappy with their effort in the opener. Pretty common with all opponents in the WCHA weekend series format. That outcome might have been different if games were 65 minutes. My feeling is NoDak can beat anyone in the country with their complete roster. It all substantiates there are no weekends off in the WCHA. Taking a period off can easily cost you. What makes the WCHA the WCHA IMO. Just my thoughts void of technical dissection of breakdowns that may have occurred in specific situations. You're not going to undefeated / untied every year. ;)

Puzzling to me is the fairly consistent lack of success for NoDak vs. Wisconsin during the era of the twins...and now. I've wondered the same regarding a potential disparity in focus from NoDak between their series vs. Minnesota vs. their series with Wisconsin. Can't figure it.

The Gophers have played one bad game every month, always on the second night of a series. You listed them all. (Actually, the game against UND was just one bad period and the Whioux are good enough to make that stick.) The game last Saturday against Bemidji was just a bad four minutes when the whole team collectively stopped playing but the rest of that one was dominated by Minnesota almost as badly as the previous night's 10-0 game; I'm hoping that that counted as February's bad game.

But you're correct; we don't have bad games against the Badgers. Take it as one of those compliments you'd rather not receive.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

It was interesting to see comments from Whioux fans after the series in Grand Forks about Minnesota's team speed. Similar to comments made by coach Johnson about playing on the bigger ice sheet Saturday and dealing with that speed.

For years, it seems we always had bad games against the Badgers, especially if there had been some extra marketing push to get a crowd of over 2,000 to show up, and then we'd come out flat … or tight … or just generally pushed around while Bucky did bad things to us. The extra fans likely went home rather unimpressed.

We did have a very bad period against Wisconsin in the teams' first meeting of the year, but thanks to Amanda Leveille, escaped it unscathed. UW's offense looks to have developed to the point that I don't think we'd get away with that anymore. I didn't think the Gophers were even close to that bad in the period where UND outscored them 3-0; the nicknameless were just that good and hungry at the start. Even last night, I thought that the Gophers had moments of dumb. E.g., when your goalie loses her stick, ice the puck immediately. She shouldn't be having to make stick saves with a skater's stick after her teammates had a chance to get a whistle and didn't. But overall, UM did many things right this weekend for every one thing they did wrong.

We had a similar period against them in one of the games at Ridder last year, too. In both cases they followed it up with one of the best periods of the season and then locked it down in the third.

Attendance of 13573 is pretty darned impressive if actual. Even if slightly overstated it had to have been pretty exciting for the players. Great haul for the food bank too.

That was the actual attendance. If they did all tickets sold/accounted for, it would have been about 15,000 flat.

Edit: Apparently they capped the ticket sales before they hit the capacity - 800 student seats number, so that it wouldn't be a nightmare for groups to find seats.

Thanks to MSU's sweep this weekend and the Gophers' wins in Madison, the Gophers are locked into a quarterfinal series with the Huskies … Huskies … Huskies. Will the Stillwater Area and SCSU alumna be returning like Ogie Ogilthorpe to goon on our kids?

Reminder that you can watch Goldy beat Bucky at 9AM tomorrow morning on BTN.

Star Tribune's Metro Player of the Year: Sydney Baldwin

"Baldwin, who already has signed to play for the Gophers, scored the game-winning goal in overtime to beat Eden Prairie in the first-ever high school hockey game played outdoors at TCF Bank Stadium. Gophers assistant coach Joel Johnson said afterward, 'Sydney Baldwin, welcome to the U of M'."
