Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Amanda Kessel named Madison Sportsperson of the year.

She's obviously a very special player, one that draws fans (including me) to Ridder Arena to see the games. We Gopher fans wish her all the best in the upcoming season.

Another bullet on a stellar "U" resume. WTG, #22!

Still believe the comments regarding the outgoing Gopher to BSU announcement could happen when rosters are published.
I have no reason to disbelieve said rumors. The BSU 2012-2013 roster is pretty large and heavy at the F position. I think if the rumor proves true the forward in question will still have a big / key role among those 16 or so forwards currently on the roster.

Although not in 2012-13. In other threads over the last several months, posters had stated that a sit-a-year rule was in effect for all transfers. The Burns release does not mention that, so perhaps those posters were incorrect. However, the WCHA has always had such a rule for intraconference transfers, so nobody from the 2011-12 Gophers roster will be skating any shifts for the Beavers in 2012-13.

Redshirt?
Redshirts are typically listed on the Minnesota roster. Schoullis is the last one that I remember (can't really count West, since she played four games), and Jen was listed during her R.S. season.

Contrary to some opinions expressed as followup commentary to the article...I don't like this guy already. IMO it's disturbing and poor policy to have one varsity sport among all Minnesota varsity sports such a dominant and preferential priority. Particularly with a program as substandard as Gopher football...sorry Gopher football fans. This is what I always liked about Maturi...his equal respect for every sport, student athlete and coaching staff and his far more balanced, equal respect and treatment thereof.

I see too much potential for too much detriment for non revenue sports. It was already noted, prior to hiring a replacement for Maturi, that several non revenue sports would likely be in the cross hairs of the new AD in order to funnel more $$ into the football program. Specifically...the biggest losers.

"Football first" as the stated primary objective from this AD...bad leadership policy IMO. While I'm sure this is music to the ears of many Gopher football fans, the job is actually to see all varsity athletics prosper, I believe.

The forwards on the 2012-2013 roster:

Downey, Kortum, Kessel, Davis, Terry, Menefee, Bona, Brausen, Burns(?), Garzone, Lorence and Brandt.

Appears to me there's some real opportunity for any of the 2011-2012 freshmen and sophs returning...and looking for more ice time...the two seniors as well. With such prominent PP and PK personnel now departed and all.

...just makes me wonder.

Was/is that Kessel on crutches? Did I miss something?
