Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Wow, what an exciting game today! I thought the Gophers were the better team and clearly deserved the win, but boy-oh-boy there were some anxious moments. Like when they reviewed the one near-miss but (thankfully) ruled that the puck never crossed the line (whew!) and then at the end when Wisconsin pulled Rigsby and we were already down a player but couldn't seem to clear the zone. But the Gophers pulled through as a team - fantastic.

Noora Raty really came HUGE big just when the team needed her to. Also it was really great to see departing seniors Sarah Erickson and Emily West have such big games that they will obviously treasure the rest of their lives. Not to mention Annie Schleper, Jen Schouliss, Kelly Seeler, Nikki Ludwigson and Alyssa Grogan - thanks to all for your contributions to the Gophers success. What a way to go out!

Best of luck to you all!

This quote from Noora Raty speaks volumes about how close the team was this season:

"This actually feels better [than the Olympic medal]," Raty said. "I love this team more than any national team I've been part of.''

Gophers goalie saves her best for last

If the subject is sisterhood I believe that at least one Gopher had an older sister who has also played DI hockey in attendance at the Frozen Four. And if I am not mistaken the older sibling had substituted her college green and gold for maroon and gold to show support for her younger sister.

And the Breck Mustang defender was in the house supporting her future teammates...uh...sisters.

The Roseville Raider was as well.

A good showing by Gophers of teams gone by: the Brodt sisters, Andrea Nichols, Whit Graft, Jaimie Horton, Michelle Maunu and Laura May were among those I saw, and I did little mingling at the venue. I didn't even see brooky, although he was probably incognito for security reasons.

Becky Wacker as well.

A not very flattering piece in the Wall Street Journal on Golden Gopher sports in general, but our womens hockey team is for sure doing their part, and more!

Get This: The Golden Gophers Won Something!

Truth be told. Thank God for hockey...and GWH in particular. Time for the men to get it done too! Given their upcoming opponent I'm guessing TTT is in our corner.

Meh. In the last ten years, Minnesota teams have won eight national titles in different sports (this doesn't count numerous individual titles, particularly in wrestling): three for the women's hockey team, two each for men's hockey and men's wrestling and one for men's golf (!). That's a pretty good record.

So true, and yet the WSJ reporter obviously wanted to paint a different picture...just one more example of that Eastern bias! ;)

Bemidji’s Erickson ends career by scoring twice to lead Minnesota to NCAA women’s hockey championship

“Growing up as a kid you dream about a championship game like this. This is the best way I could have imagined to go out. I couldn’t have hoped for a better ending to my career.”

And of course, if one wants to get technical about it, the University of Minnesota has won two national titles in football in the last five years. I'm just not sure Bulldogs fans would state it that way.

NAH, being a right wing paper that has to be right wing bias. Eastern bias is liberal. :p

Belated (and begruding) congratulations to Minnesota winning the title and keeping it in the WCHA family. It was one of the wildest first periods of hockey that I've seen. After tying it at 2 and going on a two-man power play, I liked the way things were going for the Badgers. The Gophers were very talented and very motivated.

First time at Amsoil and was pretty impressed. Thought there would be more people there, but getting used to overestimating crowd sizes. Not sure how much it was promoted locally in Duluth. Was having my pre-game beer(s) at Grandmas and the bartenders didn't know about the Frozen Four nor did several people that came up to our group asking why we were there. I can understand not going if not a hockey fan, but to not even know it's going on? Interesting...

Again, congrats to the Gophers, but the Badgers will be right back in the mix next year.
