Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

"With the outcome essentially determined, Minnesota received a big scare at the end of the second period. With just three minutes remaining, Buckeyes forward Ally Tarr illegally hit Gophers forward Emily West."

Did not see the play, but on the mens side this weekend Minnesota's Kyle Rau received a one game suspension for what was called 'Boarding' against Denver's Jason Zucker. They are cracking down on dangerous hits and I hope the harsher penalties start to have the desired effect.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

My opinion is that the call on the ice against Ms. Tarr was fair... a 5-minute major for "contact to the head" and a game misconduct (the box score only said "misconduct" without specifying, and it counts as 10 minutes in the stats either way, so some assumptions were made that it was the lesser variety).

It was not a DQ, so no automatic suspension applied, and the league probably didn't feel the need for supplemental discipline since (a) it wasn't near the boards, and (b) the two players were pretty well tied up with each other when the offending hit was delivered.

Thanks for the clarification, CD, as I know you were out there and saw it in person. I certainly realize that injuries can and do happen in hockey, but I always hate to see anyone get hurt, no matter what team they play for. That's especially true when a serious injury is caused by an opposing player when it's intentional and entirely preventable. The most egregious of these should result in suspensions, and it's very good to hear that this one does not fall into this category.

This is what I've been told: The WCHA reviewed the play and determined that Ally Tarr deseved supplimentary discipline, and that she recieved a one-game suspension. Coach Nate Handrahan of OSU appealed the suspension which allowed her to play the next day (Tarr did score twice in Saturday's contest). The appeal will be heard this week, and for what I hear, the one-game suspension will more than likely be upheld, meaning that she will have to sit one game against Wisconsin.

I saw the play well, and whether is was intentional or not, the elbow appeared to come up as Tarr approached Emily. Looked to me like she intended to hit West, maybe just not in the head. But all the same, that's exactly what Kyle Rau did to get his suspension.

Appreciate your take as an eyewitness and the added info. From yours and a few other eyewitness accounts it sounds like a suspension is not unreasonable. It's disappointing to hear by a few accounts the elbow coming up may not have been entirely unintentional. All that can be done by the WCHA and officials to avoid injuries from contact to the head should be done...suspensions included.

Fair enough. I was basing my assumption of no suspension on that fact that the league issued a press release about Rau but not about Tarr. Maybe that (the press release) will come if (when) the suspension is enforced.

Upheld it was, and here's the corresponding press release from the league office: http://www.wcha.com/women/pres1112/201202/feb15wcw.php

Wanted to stop by this thread and offer congrats to BozIce99. I saw that his daughter was selected to the preliminary roster for the IIHF 2012 World Championships. I just ordered tickets today for the medal games and cannot wait to get there. Good luck to the Gophers for the remainder of the season. I have seen all the teams in the league when they have visited OSU and Minnesota is the best team I have seen this season. That's an amazing team you have there.

osualum86, of all the posters on the Forum you have to be the No. 1 fan of your team...definitely a "glass completely full" kind of guy and always respectful of the other team...

Here are series notes from Grand Forks for this weekend's big series against the Gophers: http://www.fightingsioux.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=13500&ATCLID=205380555

Sure hope our Gophers team plays up to the high level of osualum86's assessment that they're the "best team" he's seen this season. There's little doubt that these teams will both be fired up to play one another.

Ohio State women's hockey player suspended for hit on Gopher

Good news for Gopher fans: "West will be back in the lineup Friday for the Gophers' season-ending two-game home series vs. North Dakota. That means West will not miss Saturday’s Senior Night festivities at Ridder Arena."

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Should be a GREAT weekend. I don't think either team will not being going full force this weekend.

It was intriguing to be reminded that UND is 4-2 against UM in the last 6. I know that is a small sampling, but as a fan who remembered the dark ages under Rivard it is great to see. Hopefully we can keep it up this weekend as this may be a NCAA QF preview.

Thanks for the kind words D2D. I just really enjoy watching great womens hockey, and I am happy that we play in the country's best league. That means we have to go up against some of the best programs in the country, but in order to be the best, you have to beat the best. I sincerely enjoy it when we match up against the upper echelon teams in the league. I have hope that Coach Handrahan can get us to that level someday. As for your series this weekend, if Noora brings her game (likely) and you get some scoring, I could see a sweep there. Your team is that good. Good luck this weekend! Oh, and having seen the injury to West last Friday, I am glad to hear that she will be playing this weekend. I really hate to see anyone get hurt! One of these days, I am going to have to get to a game at Ridder. Gonna put that on my bucket list!
