Minnesota Girls High School Hockey IV

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey IV

5 finalists are announced for 2017 Ms Hockey award. All 5 are WCHA recruits and 3 of the 5 Gopher recruits...No surprise there.

Grace Bowlby
Emily Brown
Naomi Rogge
Taylor Wente
Grace Zumwinkle (likely winner)

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey IV

Records:
Blaine 20-3-2
Maple Grove 20-4-1

They played one game against each other that ended in a 1-1 tie

Pretty darn close as to who is seeded #1 or #2.
Wow! I'm stunned! I know Maple Grove isn't a normal contender for the State title, but I thought most of their team was still intact from the runner-up status last year? Plus, I know they played the top teams in the state at least once and Edina twice. Two D1 commit goalies, U18 national team forward and two D1 defense players... Both goalies are up for senior goalie of the year, one MS Hockey candidate and they can't get a # 1 seed in their section?! I'd be ****ed if I were their coach. May not matter if they beat Blaine tomorrow, but I just can't fathom the rationale there.

Blaine by my count has at least 5 D1 players

Blaine tied Hill-Murray, Maple Grove lost to Hill-Murray.
Blaine beat Coon Rapids. Maple Grove lost to Coon Rapids.
Blaine lost to Blake, Maple Grove lost to Edina, twice.
Blaine split with Elk River. Maple Grove beat Elk River.
Blaine lost to Anoka. Maple Grove beat Anoka.
Blaine beat Centennial twice, Maple Grove beat them once.

Maple Grove was 5-3-1 against the top ten
Blaine was 4-2-2
Maple Grove has one more loss than Blaine,
where again is the outrage?

I guess they’ll have to settle it on the ice.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey IV

Ummm... how the hell did Blaine get the number one seed over Maple Grove?!
Good question. The coaches place a lot of weight on each team's record within the section. Maple Grove was 6-1-1 and Blaine was 7-1-1.
http://www.minnesota-scores.net/classstandings.php?yid=1617&sport=110&class=3

Overall Maple Grove was 20-4-1 and Blaine was 20-3-2 in the regular season, but according to KRACH the Crimson had a more difficult schedule which gave them a higher KRACH ranking:
http://www.bgoski.com/KRACH_SEC_20170212.htm

But in the end it came down to a "human" vote of the section coaches and they gave the nod to Blaine (although I suspect the vote was close).

No matter, who is the better team will be decided on the ice tomorrow evening! Should be a great game...

Occasionally some great players decide to stick with the kids the played with all their life instead of going to a hockey factory. Maybe they have the sport in a better prospective even if they do not win a state championship.

The coaches of the teams in the section had a meeting and voted on how the teams should be seeded. The coaches. I do not presume to have better knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the teams in this section than the knowledge of the people actually coaching games against all of the others.

The coaches voted.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey IV

Blake wins yet again in the 5A section final by a score of 5-4. It really was an outstanding game. It is a shame that folks won't get to see Grace Zumwinkle in the State tournament. Seeing her live really is worth the price of admission. I was also impressed by 9th grader Olivia Mobley (17) for Breck. Madeline Wethington and Sarah McClanahan for Breck, were their best players in this game. Wethington's game is quite refined for a 10th grader. She reminds of Stecklein with her size and poise with the puck.

So it's a popularity contest? Seems wrong to me... There should be some more empirical method.
No matter. Both teams will Duke it out tomorrow. Probably would have come to this anyway...
I was surprised to hear that Elk River lost to Forest Lake tonight. I guess my hockey radar is not what it used to be...

Gopher recruit Abigail Boreen, with a goal and two assists, leads Hill-Murray over White Bear Lake 4-1.

I was hoping to get up the Aldrich arena tonight to see the two Gopher recruits but couldn't get the schedule to work. Definitely looking forward to seeing Boreen in the State Tournament.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey IV

Blaine defeats Maple Grove tonight 3-0. Any questions about their seeding now?

Had maple Grove not been mentally devastated by the awful seeding, they surely would have won. They like their home jerseys more than their away ones, you know how girls are. Can someone post a box score of that game please?

In what matters to you, the stats show Coco Francis played the whole game in net making 32 saves on 35 shots but the writeup says Blesi was pulled after Blaine scored two goals in the first 3:59 of the game.

As I said earlier it is too bad folks won't get to see her in the State Tournament. Blake was shadowing her with one and sometimes two players Thursday night but it was still impressive to see her create space for herself with her speed. She has the rare combination you just don't really see in women's hockey. Size, speed, and power.

Update: The stats now match the writeup as it has Blesi with having played 3.59 and allowing 2 goals on 3 shots...Ouch.

Yeah, that's not the way I was hoping the season would end for her. Too bad the rest of the team couldn't pop a couple and give them a chance to move on, but that's hockey. The goalie situation at UW next year will be fascinating. Obviously Cece has the 1 year of experience and some games under her belt, but if Blesi or Baldwin (though she's so tiny) performs in practice, MJ will play the one who give UW the best chance to win.

Is Bowlby's team done or are they still alive?
