Minnesota Girls High School Hockey IV

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey IV

Appreciate the rapid reply. All of that makes sense, and is more or less what I'd expect.

Except that in the case of CDH & Edina, geography seems to have been ignored.

Maybe I'm making too much of the Mpls./St. Paul distinction; I get that the mileage isn't large. I also realize that groupings of this nature will inevitably be imperfect. But the placement of CDH just seems geographically weird.

there are even more weird (distance) ones
Princeton & Chisago with primarily SW area private schools

Buffalo & Wright with Roseau & Bemidji (but whatcha gonna do?)

New Prague with Mound, Orono, and Delano

Year after year, this is the most unfortunate part about the Class A bracket. In a tournament with at most three or four really good teams, two are in the same section.

gotta wonder if this isn't to encourage them to move to AA, or do schools no longer have the choice?
I can see both sides of the argument, it would be nice if some of the A schools in AA would move down to A making it more competitive

Can a girls team move to AA while the boys stay in A?

Not sure if the rule still applies but originally schools were allowed to select to the AA if they were in the first few years of existence but had to play A if they were large enough after that. Schools are allowed to move up & for a number of Years South Saint Paul played in the A division and even won State there.

Yes, but it's been very rare if you are talking about a single school that has both a girls and a boys program. One exception that comes to mind is South St. Paul, which at one time did opt up to AA for girls (winning the AA state title a couple of times) vs. the boy's team which remained in Class A.

Bear in mind that for both girls and boys the main determination between Class A and AA is size of each school's enrollment. The Top 64 enrollment schools - plus opt-ups - are assigned to Class AA, and all other schools having programs fall into Class A. If you choose to opt-up it's a two year commitment.

There are many instances of schools not having enough numbers to support their own girls team, which leads to them joining forces with one or more other schools to form a co-op. Combined, their enrollment may put them in Class AA. But those same schools may well have sufficient numbers to support their own individual boys teams, and if their enrollments are small enough they could be assigned to Class A, even if the girl hockey players from those same schools are playing Class AA.

Hope this helps.

Section Brackets are not out yet on Minnesota Girls Hockey Hub or the MSHSL website yet so I went based off of last years section brackets

Most of them are out today.

Our section final location is two hours away. Sucks.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey IV

Yes. A girls team may opt up to AA if they wish. The boys team does not. Although if you are talking Breck/Blake......they both should move up. #sandbaggers

Doesn't Britain's have a system where the second tier champion is automatically moved up to the premiere league? I get that its not a warm and fuzzy feeling to get relegated down esp in high school sports.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey IV

Blake and Breck will in fact be meeting in the section 5A final with both their victories tonight. Thursday night, 7:30pm at Parade Ice Garden.

Over in section 5AA, Blaine and Maple Grove advanced to the final. That matchup is Friday night, 7:00pm at Roseville Ice Arena.

Or if the east side is more to your liking, section 4AA has Hill Murray and White Bear Lake who advanced to the final with victories tonight. Friday night 7:00pm at Aldrich Arena

Plenty of Gopher recruits to get a look at with these options.

Bottom 3 in Premier are relegated and 3 get moved up.

But HS classifications are based on school size, not skill.

The problem with moving up a team to AA once they have one the A championship is that you are punishing the next year's group of kids. In most high schools (not Blake) you have no control over the next crop of kids coming up through your program. By forcing them to move up a class you would actually be punishing the kids for last years team's success. This is why I agree that a team should not be forced to move up. My only issue is that teams such as Blake know they will be good for the next X amount of years. They choose to sandbag just to win a trophy is puzzling to me.

There are some who say the A schools in AA should move down, thereby improving the quality and interest of A

Early on MSHSL allowed "new" teams (and I don't remember how they determined exactly what new meant but it was the first few years of play) to "play down" but at some point they had to move up. There has been talk off and on about dividing by success instead of size. With the hockey factories having a lot of success I am sure it will be a topic of conversation for the foreseeable future.

A number of years back on the boys side they divided teams into 'Tier I' and 'Tier II' and it took only a couple of years before they went back to an enrollment based system.

I'm planning on going to the 5A game between the top 2 teams in class A, Blake and Breck. 3 Gopher recruits to watch plus some potential younger recruits as well. Should be a Blake win as they have more depth than Breck but maybe Zumwinkle can work some magic. ;) Probably a good idea to get there early for the 7:30 start tonight at Parade Ice Garden if your planning on going.

Ummm... how the hell did Blaine get the number one seed over Maple Grove?!

Sent from my iPhone. Apologies for any misspelling-

Sent from my iPhone. Apologies for any misspelling-

Records:
Blaine 20-3-2
Maple Grove 20-4-1

They played one game against each other that ended in a 1-1 tie

Pretty darn close as to who is seeded #1 or #2.
