Where are the former North Suburban teams going? Via some past examples witnessed...could BSM have some difficulty finding another conference willing to open the door?

Haven't heard anything lately. There was some talk about forming an all-Catholic school conference but that idea died when Hill-Murray and CDH indicated they were not interested in leaving their current conferences.

Maybe I missed it, but how do kids get picked for the Elite League - are there tryouts or are they invited?

They used to have a formula, National Camp, final 54 MN phase. In the past there was a small invite tryout - I think that group also served as alternates if injuries/conflict occurred.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

Time to resurrect this thread. Tryouts are now underway and scrimmages will start this weekend.

So which teams do people like this year? From what I'm hearing, some of the favorites in Class AA - in no particular order - include Hill Murray, Hopkins, Edina, Eden Prairie, Wayzata, Benilde-St. Margaret's, the two Lakevilles, and of course Minnetonka. Minnetonka is supposed to be down a bit from the past two years, but I certainly wouldn't count them out. BSM has a very strong senior class - the 2014 DI Commitment thread shows 5 players, all seniors, who will be playing D1 a year from now. But these five include four forwards and their goaltender, and in order to win their section they will have to fill some big holes on defense. I also hear that Dodge County will have a real nice team this year, as will Buffalo.

Any other strong favorites that I'm missing (Roseville, Stillwater, CDH, up North, etc.?). How about Class A?

What's the scoop on Achiever Academy? A new independent / private? With not necessarily a Minnesota native roster yet a MSHSL competitor? Don't know, just asking.

They seem to have set up shop in a few locales, including two in Minny and one in Rochester, NY. Did not know they were fielding teams though.

It'll be interesting to follow their progress and see if they succeed. Unlike Shattuck-St. Mary's they will play a MN high school schedule, initially in the smaller school class 1A.

From what I've been able to gather, what makes them different from traditional high schools are:
(1) they emphasize online learning (as opposed to traditional classroom style instruction) with individual onsite teacher/tutor involvement available to assist, as needed), and
(2) a lot more icetime, practice and physical training - as much as 3-5 hours a day, every day.

You would think this would attract some very dedicated athletes who are looking to succeed and advance to the next level, especially those in youth hockey who, for whatever reason, believe their own school district's high school program is not the ideal path for them to get to where they want to go (or maybe more accurately, where their parents think they should go). ;) In this respect, it would seem that their main competition would come from the traditional private school alternatives (Hill-Murray, BSM, Breck, Blake, etc.) or the Thoroughbreds, the latter of which clearly doesn't need any more competition as they seem to be hanging by a thread right now.

In any case, Achiever Academy - and their parent (?) Northern Educate - seems to mean business, as their recent offer to purchase the troubled Vadnais Sports Center would seem to confirm: http://www.startribune.com/local/east/229153451.html

Only time will tell if their model succeeds.

Not hockey, but this is a shot most hockey fans would appreciate.
Nice shot. I don't watch high school soccer, but I'm not accustomed to seeing hockey players flinch out of the way like that one Blake girl did.

Re: Minnesota Girls High School Hockey III

With what money?

They need to find financing or their purchase of the Vadnais Sports Center will not go through. This is not your typical small, bare-bones hockey arena. If I were the seller, and wasn't convinced Northern Educate would find a lender, I would have taken the guaranteed case offer! And if I were a prospective lender, I would underwrite the proposed loan very carefully.
