An icon and true pioneer in Minnesota varsity high school and college hockey who has given back tremendously.

Great tribute to a super person! The Jr Whitecaps has been a tremendous way to gain exposure for MN players. The Fall Elite League is not mentioned here but is another accomplishment driven by Winny! She has also been active with the Herb Brooks Foundation at the Board Level.

I don't believe I've seen Nicole Schammel's name appear on any school's commitment list? She's a Junior in high school, which would make her a 2014-15 recruit.

Thus far she's running away with the Minny scoring lead, with 59 points (31 Goals, 28 Assists) on the season (14 games played). Granted, Red Wing's schedule has not been the strongest, but those kind of numbers are still impressive.

You've been around the game long enough to know that high school stats mean very little to college coaches. They are looking for complete players,or players who likely will become complete players. If this young lady has the makings of said player it won't be long before she is "found" and commits.

Weak schedule aside, could it be the Wingers are a pretty good squad just the same? I haven't seen them...but it looks like they did well against a ranked metro team last night. Any eyewitness observations from the win over the Mustangs?

Have not seen Red Wing play, other than on TV in the Class A Tourney this past March. Yes, they do play a weaker schedule than many. I had to look quite a ways down the latest SOS rankings to find them at #56 out of 120 teams. So there's no denying that their schedule is pretty weak. However KRACH currently has them at #6 in their overall rankings, and this of course does take their weaker SOS into account. So they do have a pretty good team this year, helped I'm sure by having Gopher recruit Paige Haley defending on the blue line. But there is also little question that Red Wing is a much stronger team because of Nicole Schammel, who has led the team in scoring the past two years and is currently way ahead this year. Her stats since 8th grade are:

8th Grade - 25G + 12A = 37 Points
9th Grade - 41G + 14A = 55 Points
10th Grade 37G + 32 A = 69 Points
11th Grade 31G + 28A = 59 Points (through 14 games)

With those kind of numbers I'd be surprised if she didn't end up playing D1 somewhere.

I agree that HS stats don't mean much if you are playing teams that are easy to beat and I contend that doesn't make you a better player in the end. And Class A is not the best competition either. The game against the Mustangs was 2-1 with 2 empty nets at the end.
However I believe Schammel is the real deal and will go D1 for sure, I don't believe Paige Haley is a D that the Gophers will play much.

They are looking for complete players,or players who likely will become complete players.
Coaches start out looking for "perfect" players that have everything on their personal checklists. Eventually, all of those players are gone, and coaches have to start going back through those that have some areas that are judged as weaknesses. That can be academic or character questions, lack in an areas such as size, speed, or hands, or just being a bit off in hockey sense.

I got to watch Red Wing in person Saturday for the first time since Rose Alleva played there, and I think Schammel can help somebody. She's not big, and it is hard to coach size. However, she can create her own offense, and many a team is starved for players that can. She also competes well, and that competitive drive suggests someone that is willing to work to get better.

It is true that the depth in HS hockey is lacking in general, particularly for the Class A programs. One of Breck's best players was an 8th grader, and Red Wing gave sizable minutes to a 7th grader. You don't see that on AAA teams, but then these 7th and 8th graders are getting the chance to face some higher-level players than they likely would in a club system. Even though the ice was not covered by elite players, it was funny how often it wound up being Schipper versus Haley. Competitive people will always be able to find a way to motivate themselves, even if the quality of competition is not optimal.

Hockey Day in Minnesota with frigid temps, blowing winds creating intensely cold temps for the games played on the pond or outdoor rink. All as it should be. Tuned in to the Hibbing / Eagan girsl matchup per onscreen guide.anticipated with great interest. Noticed it was Hibbing vs. GRG Lightning instead. So...no opportunity here to watch Megan Wolfe...:(

The Girls 'Hockey Day' match is always the last thing showed and played.. played DURING the Gopher game and shown after the Wild game that night.. I'd hate to have to go take pictures of it cause the lighting has usually REALLY sucked for the late game

Hibbing and Eagan did play one another yesterday, but it was boys' game!
