Minnesota Cup

Re: Minnesota Cup

I understand where you're coming from. I think they'll still make it to Bemidji, but it won't be as often.

Can't be much less often then the previous three games over the last 13 years! :p Heck, those three games cover the 57 year history of BSU hockey.... ;)

Hopefully in Bemidji's case, it will be more often.

On a side note, I hope it is more of a Classic format so that conference foes (MSU-M/BSU, SCSU/UMD) do not end up playing each other in years they are in it.

Re: Minnesota Cup

Lol.

Are we really pretending that schools are going to replace the Final Five revenue with this "tournament?" That's a joke. There is no way that the little sliver of the revenue pie that tUMD would get from this farce would be worth committing to. tUMD would make more money on a home and home with Bemidji than they would off this sham.

I'm ashamed of the athletic department for going along with this. tUMD is past using "we play the Gophers!!!!!!@121232i942349q123879q_!!-!!_!" as a recruiting strategy. So are all 3 of the other schools.

Re: Minnesota Cup

Sorry, guess I probably have come off a little "****y" about all of this, and really, I could care less about where the Gophers play their road games. I guess what got me going was the Gophers (and sometimes some, but not all, of their fan base) looking "down their nose" at the other Minnesota schools. "We want to play every one of them," Maturi said. "[This tournament] is the way we are going to do it" just reinforced this a little bit in my mind.

Would I like to see them in Bemidji, yeah, I would. But with only three road series to schedule, where are the Gophers going to go? Will they schedule them with Miami, North Dakota, BC/BU, Denver/CC, Notre Dame, or will they schedule them with BSU, MSU-M, UMD or SCSU? Based on contracts that will be signed and the "power" of some programs, I am not going to hold my breath on seeing them in Bemidji again. I just feel the almighty dollar is going to trump everything else.

It will be interesting to see what comes from all of this....... Is it the weekend yet, I need some hockey???
I think that you're on to something Millsy, it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Is there any idea which direction your favorite school is leaning?

No one's making UMD participate. Maybe the decision makers at UMD know a little more than you do? Or are you suggesting that UMD is planning to participate for some other reason?

God are you a joke.

They will all likely be participating. Allegedly there is absolutely no benefit to anyone except the Gophers and UMD is just going to do it out of the goodness of their hearts.

Re: Minnesota Cup

Call Penn State and Barry Alvarez. This isn't Minnesota's fault.

Some Minnesota fans are/were more than willing to give Minnesota a lions share of the credit for SCSU, MSUM and BSU being admitted to the WCHA. Given this I don't think they should be able to claim 100% innocence for the breakup of the WCHA.

But in this case I do actually blame Barry Alvarez for this debacle, apparently Minnesota didn't want to do the B1G conference. Wasn't he trying to join the CCHA a couple of years ago because he wanted to play Michigan and Michigan State more.

Re: Minnesota Cup

From a UMD/UMTC/SCSU perspective I'm not sure how this is going to make up any Final Five revenue.

Let's say this deal averages 10,000 fans game (way generous) x 4 games = 40,000 tickets.
and at $30 a ticket that equals $1.2 million ticket revenue for the weekend.
Divide evenly among four schools = $300,000 per school for the weekend.

Say UMD/SCSU schedules a non-conference home series instead.
6,500 fans per game x 2 games = 13,000 tickets
and at $30 a ticket that equals $390,000 of ticket revenue.

Doing the same with UMTC, and 20,000 tickets = $600,000

So I'm not sure what the economic benefit is for any of these three schools. But I guess if this is taking the place of two road non-con games that would work. I just hope these don't count toward how many home games we'd schedule.

Yes. No one is happier that Penn State started hockey. No one. In fact he busted up the Showcase prior to Penn State adding hockey because Ohio State wasn't included.

I was smiling ear-to-ear when I heard that a-hole lost a lot of his savings in a Ponzi scheme. Couldn't have happened to a worse human being.

You also have to factor in the sponsorship deals that will be in place for this event. Do we really think this thing is going to be called the Minnesota Cup? Not a chance! Some Minnesota company (Target, Best Buy, 3M, TCF, etc) will pony up some $ to host this. Plus there will be TV $.

Exactly.
