Minnesota Cup

Re: Minnesota Cup

My bad. I can never tell when people are being sarcastic.

No problem.

You are right, Herb would be as well. This is a classy move.

Looking forward to this weekend's series. Both teams D are playing well. Who's forwards are going to bring the A game? (We will be bringing all 10 of ours Friday). This will be quite the challenge for SCSU.

Re: Minnesota Cup

Basically this tournament is the Goofers saying we are helping the other Minnesota schools, we just won't go to their barn to do it. We will play them at the X or at Mariucci so that we don't have to leave the 494-694 loop for any non-conference games........ .

strong words for someone that doesnt know what hes talking about. maturi is working on playing every MN team every year, as well as the two series against each big ten team each year. it allows 2 series each year left to split among north dakota, notre dame, BC/BU, denver etc. personally i think he is going too far with keeping other MN schools on the schedule. id much rather play north dakota every year than mankato. rather than complain- you should thank him for doing that much for other MN schools.

I love these series. Always up-tempo and exciting. I expect nothing less than a hard fought series, even with the injury problems and lack of depth you guys are dealing with. I'm guessing split, but not the traditional home team wins variety. I think road teams win both nights. Just a hunch :)

Re: Minnesota Cup

We're all just speculating here, but if this tournament prevents the Gophers from going to St. Cloud, Duluth, Mankato or Bemidji anymore, then no, Brooks would not be a fan of it.

Lucia has been quoted months ago about continuing to play SCSU, UMD, BSU, etc in addition to the new tournament. It will not happen every year necessarily. Until I hear Lucia say "we will not play in your barn" there is nothing to get worked up about.

"We want to play every one of them," Maturi said. "[This tournament] is the way we are going to do it."

I'm sorry, but that last line makes me nervous.

Of course they are going to travel to the other MN schools, but it probably won't be on a yearly basis anymore. That changed when the conference situation changed. This tourney will help all the teams financially and I think Brooks would be in favor of it.

Exactly.

We'll see... I said that I don't know for sure what will happen, I just know that the Gophers didn't show up in Bemidji too much before they joined the conference.

We are talking about 2013-14 and beyond here. Based on the past statements/history of the Goofer Hockey Program, I don't see them making trips to SCSU, UMD, MSU-M or BSU. If they have 20 game conference schedule, that is five home series and five road series. They have always stated that they want to play as many home games as possible, this year they have 21 out of 36, Last year 22 of 34. With 14 non-conference games to play with and past history, I see them only going on the road for, at most, three series a year. Two of those game will be eaten up by the "Minnesota Cup" at the Xcel Center. So, where will the Goofers travel too, UMD, MSU-M, BSU, SCSU, or will they travel to play Notre Dame, North Dakota, BC/BU or Denver? Heck, Miinnesota only went to Bemidji for one GAME out of the 11 years at D-I before BSU joined the WCHA. North Dakota, UMD and MSU-M were a lot more open to travel than that. Maybe they will do a home and home with SCSU and MSU-M on those "non-tournament" years, but will we ever see them up in Bemidji again, I am not going to hold my breath.....

Maturi said their aim is 20 home games, but two of the MN Cup games the Gophers play in will count towards the 20 home games. They won't be hosting the Mariucci Classic anymore.

So, with 10 conference home games plus the 2 MN Cup games the Gophers play in, that's 12 home games. Add the 10 conference road games and we're up to 22 games (12 home and 10 road). Assuming they play 34 games, that would leave 4 additional home series to schedule and 3 additional road series to schedule.

Sorry, guess I probably have come off a little "****y" about all of this, and really, I could care less about where the Gophers play their road games. I guess what got me going was the Gophers (and sometimes some, but not all, of their fan base) looking "down their nose" at the other Minnesota schools. "We want to play every one of them," Maturi said. "[This tournament] is the way we are going to do it" just reinforced this a little bit in my mind.

Would I like to see them in Bemidji, yeah, I would. But with only three road series to schedule, where are the Gophers going to go? Will they schedule them with Miami, North Dakota, BC/BU, Denver/CC, Notre Dame, or will they schedule them with BSU, MSU-M, UMD or SCSU? Based on contracts that will be signed and the "power" of some programs, I am not going to hold my breath on seeing them in Bemidji again. I just feel the almighty dollar is going to trump everything else.

It will be interesting to see what comes from all of this....... Is it the weekend yet, I need some hockey???

I understand where you're coming from. I think they'll still make it to Bemidji, but it won't be as often. I think the tournament is an effort to try and replace some of the Final Five money that everyone (Gophers included) will miss. It also allows the MN teams to maintain some consistency in playing each other yearly. While far from perfect for any party, I think it's an honest effort and should be fun :)
