Minnesota @ Bemidji State: 10/18-10/19

Re: Minnesota @ Bemidji State: 10/18-10/19

So if the beavers are blocking the crease, will we see Ambroz attempt to score with another between the legs, back-door play?

Re: Minnesota @ Bemidji State: 10/18-10/19

So do the Gophs shoot at the student section end twice, or at the other end?

Re: Minnesota @ Bemidji State: 10/18-10/19

You could use the directors cut on the FSN web site.

I don't think the captain will be watching any beaver pounding on Directors Cut. FSN discontinued that feature last season.

Why is a Beaver like a pizza? When it's good, it's pretty good. And when it's bad, well...it's still pretty good.

Why would they do that? Doesn't every other arena in college hockey put the opposing goalie in front of the students for the first and third period?

Re: Minnesota @ Bemidji State: 10/18-10/19

Bemidji State got herself a big brown beaver
And she shows it off to all her friends.
One day, you know, that beaver tried to leave her,
So she caged him up with cyclone fence.
Along came Goldy Gopher
And said Recognize that smell?
Smells like seven layers,
That beaver eats Taco Bell.

Now Bucky he was a Badger out of Madison
And he travelled with the carnival shows.
He ran bumper cars, sucked cheap cigars
And he candied up his nose.
He got wind of the big brown beaver
So he though he'd take himself a peek,
But the beaver was quick and he grabbed him by the kiwis
Now he ain't ****ed for a week.
(And a half!)

Now Bemidji State took her big brown beaver,
And she stuck him up in the air.
Said I sure do love this big brown beaver
And I wish I did have a pair.
Now the beaver once slept for seven days
And it gave us all an awful fright.
So I tickled his chin and I gave him a pinch
And the bastard tried to bite me.
Bemidji State loved her big brown beaver
And she stroked him all the time.
She *****ed her finger one day and it occurred to her
She might have a porcupine.

The No. 3 University of Minnesota Golden Gopher men's hockey program hits the road for the first time in 2013-14 this weekend with a nonconference series at Bemidji State. The rematch of in-state and former Western Collegiate Hockey Association rivals gets underway at 7:30 p.m. on Friday followed by a 7 p.m. matchup on Saturday.

Against Bemidji State

Minnesota's first road trip of the season is fittingly against one of its former conference rivals in Bemidji State. The Gophers own a seven-game winning streak against the Beavers (eight-game unbeaten streak) with Minnesota sweeping the final regular-season series of the 2012-13 season at Sanford Center and then taking another pair of games at Mariucci Arena the next weekend in WCHA Frist Round Action. While the Gophers have had success against the Beavers as of late, four of the last seven games have been decided by one goal.

Re: Minnesota @ Bemidji State: 10/18-10/19

I agree 100%. Cammarata looked a little lost at times and Kloos seemed like he spent an awful lot of time waiting for the puck to come to him - especially in the defensive zone. I thought Fasching was one of the bright spots of the weekend and played like someone that belonged on the ice, rather than someone that wanted to be on the ice.

I've only seen Cammarata play three games, but I watched the UNH over again to get a better idea of what we can expect from him. His game is really all about finding the open space and then working his puck movement and stickhandling magic from outside the crease for a clear pass or a shot. As a playmaker, he seems to have excellent full ice vision and knows where his linemates are to make the big play. He doesn't appear to have blinding speed and unlike Gopher players who are similar in height, like Kyle Rau and Jacob Cepis, his game is not very aggressive and tenacious at all along the walls. He lost a number of battles on the walls and was obviously overpowered by some of the very tall UNH D. Some of the NHL scouting reports indicated he is not aggressive to the point of not wanting to engage at all. In the UNH game, he didn't appear to hesitate to jump in and battle along the walls, but not as frequently and skillfully as Rau or Cepis did, so his ability to win puck battles needs to improve.

Bemidji always seems to play the Gophers tight with their brand of a physical, shutdown defensive game and with some solid goaltending thrown in from Andrew Walsh. In the 2 WCHA playoff games in March, the Gophers fired a whopping 92 shots on Walsh. But still needed an OT win in the first game, and were losing 3-2 in the 3rd in the second game, and then scored 2 Gs for a close 4-3 Gopher comeback win. Even though BSU lost 10 seniors, I suspect Bemidji's defensive game plan this weekend will be similar to last season, as they anticipate a strong Gopher speed and puck control game.

Similar to last season, an early concern for the Gophers is the PP, which is only 2/12 and clipping at a dismal 16.7%. Last season, the Gophers had similar early season woes and were 3/20 on the PP in the first 5 games, before finding their niche and possessing the #1 PP in the nation. But Bemidji's PK has been very good as well, and has typically been in the 80% range (currently 83%, Gophers/80%). In 4 games against BSU last season the Gophers went only 3/9 on the PP.

I anticipate two close, physical games with BSU possibly pulling out a tie or an upset. Go Gophers! Rah! :)

Happy Gopher Hockey Friday! In a couple hours I will be done with work and heading for Bemidji!!

Re: Minnesota @ Bemidji State: 10/18-10/19

Has Bobby Kinne played at all? How's he looked?

No, he did not see any action against St. Cloud.

To add to Harley's post, the Beaver D pretty much returned everyone from last year, so that is where their experience lies, along with their goaltending. For the freshmen forwards, it is baptism by fire, first with then #9 SCSU on the big ice, and now #3 Minnesota, but luckily on the small ice and in Bemidji.

FWIW, BSU's other two non-conference series are at home with now #1 Miami and a home and home with now #6 North Dakota. An upset by the Beavers here and there would really help thier confidence and their PWR standing come the end of the year (provided they do well in the WCHA).

GO BEAVERS!

By now I assume you've arrived and are swapping Beaver jokes with fellow Gopher fans at a local watering hole? ;)

Re: Minnesota @ Bemidji State: 10/18-10/19

Being from Bemidji and always having an eye on the beavers as a kid but an alum of the U always makes me second guess what I want to happen in this series. I guess I want a Gopher sweep with a score of 10-9 both nights. But don't play Wilcox too much so his stats don't take a huge hit. :p
