Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Here's the CCHA Rewind of the week. CCHA has the date wrong because according to the MSU media guide this actually happened January 23rd of '87 instead of December 3rd. MSU won the next night at Yost 2-1. As much as I hate the winged helmets, thank you for changing, because those white helmets are atrocious.

Gandhi has his own going down the tubes thread. Don't think your special because of that.
I'm special because I know how to use you're and your. I wish that didn't make me special.

In other news, don't forget, tonight's game is at 6:30. BTN needs the 9 o'clock hour available to show wrestling.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Can't say that was the prettiest game ever, but the win was nice. The only thing I can say about their play was it was more emotional.

Boo looked good.

Nice surprise to see Rutledge play, he looked better. Not what we all expected in October, but certainly better than his actual play then.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

My observation of the game was that Michigan played harder. They've been playing hard all year but things haven't been going their way. We miss our passes/shots and the few turnovers we have end up being goals (i.e. the turnover in our own zone tonight that led to the first sparty goal). Granted, our goal;-tending isn't what it should be but the goalie "shouldn't" be in that position in the first place. This was just a bad year and we don't know how to handle it. We've been spoiled by 22 years of great hockey. Next year will be interesting.

A weird idea that I just had but I don't even believe. With both sparty and Michigan blowing chunks this year could it be possible that both sparty and Michigan are tanking this season as a going away present? I don't think so either but I'm desperate for a reason, any reason...

Yeah, but Gandhi never lost to Holy Cross in the NCAA playoffs. Matter of fact, neither did we.

Nice sweep Blue, 40% of our wins are against State. At least we'll avoid the dungeon and the pimps from Marquette are below us, too.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

So after a looooong season, a weekend sweep of Spary isn't enough to bring out a lot of comments?

Sure, we didn't really look that good, but it's not as if everything is bad.

Rutledge did a lot better. No, the goals Saturday were not great, but at least we kept it to 2. Friday- same kind of thing. There were plenty of chances where he could have crumbled, but between him, the D blocking, and Sparty not really shooting- it was a general improvement. Even weekends like that do a lot to a person's mind. I would not be surprised to see him play the rest of the season.

Between Nieves and DuBlois- hard to say who had a better weekend. Man, they were all over the place. Part of that young movement that makes one optimistic for the future. With the lack of senior anything, the more they come out, the better we will be. Keep playing hard, and it's possible that you guys could be the starting line all except for the March 3 game.

No real comments about the D- with all due respect, Sparty just isn't that good to judge. BUT. It's possible that the mental part of a good weekend could improve. I have my doubts, but who knows anymore.

So right now, we are tied for 8th, but BG has two game in hand on us. One point out of 7th, and a safer position for home ice in the first round. 10 pts out of 5th, were we have the first weekend off, but also don't get to host. 6 games left or 18 points available. Will be an interesting finish at this point.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

State has abysmal offense. So, the question is, did we play better, or is State that bad?

I agree with a lot of what alfa said. Good to get the weekend sweep, and a chance to sing "The Victors" in the locker room. It was nice to see Rutledge get the starts and the Ws. I'd expect to see him start next weekend.

Notre Dame coming up and they are currently in a slump. I think they've gone 1-7 recently? (too lazy to look it up). Will we be able to tie or even break our longest win streak of the season, or will we help ND snap break out of their slump?

For me, one of the stranger things about being at the bottom of the conference is figuring out who to cheer for in the other games. I'm so used to cheering for the underdog as Michigan is usually in a fight at the top of the league. So now I'm supposed to cheer against BG, LSSU, and Northern so we can at least have 1st round home ice? Weird.

just remembered something- who was that announcing on Friday? not a voice I can place....

MSU's offense is weak as it averages just over 2 goals/game, which is what M allowed on the weekend. If the games were at Munn, I would be more impressed, but then the results might be different. When M has defensive breakdowns, MSU capitalized on most with some weak defensive efforts by Serville, Chiasson and Moffie 2x on the MSU goals. MSU also had a 3-on-1 at the JLA that seemed to last 20 seconds due to another bad line change.

Rutledge played well enough, not sure if he really made any outstanding saves like Hildebrand did this weekend (like the stop on Treais at JLA). Good to see goals go in on Saturday as many quality chances were missed at Friday's pond hockey skate.

Let's see what Rutledge does at Notre Dame.

Actually 1-6 not counting their shootout win over "The nut" Saturday.

Don't know the name, didn't recognize the face.

It was NOT Scott.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

We're 2-7-1 going back to the first game of the new year.

Michigan looked a little better in most facets of the game against MSU, but like some of you, you wonder which team was responsible for that. I do think the coming weekend will be a preview for the way the rest of the season goes for both teams.

There's something to be said for winning streaks and what they do for a team's confidence, so a sweep by UM may put you guys into position for a decent run to the end of the season. Your schedule looks pretty formidable beyond the games with ND, but home ice in a first round match-up and avoiding Western or Miami in a second round one and I wouldn't be surprised to see Michigan at the Joe. There probably won't be a complete repeat of the 2010 run because that team both had the goalie who could steal a win or 12, and actually played pretty good hockey. I just don't think it scored at the rate most UM teams do.

A sweep by Notre Dame might give my supremely struggling team that boost in confidence that never came last season and would help assure we finish well. Virtually all of our wins are against teams with losing marks, so if we fail to take advantage of that this weekend, I'll be ready to give up hope on the season.

This is a completely different team than the one you guys saw at Yost in November. We're a mess in just about every facet of the game. Summerhays was playing as well as any goalie in the NCAA at the time and we were the best third period team around. I think we outscored you guys 5-0 in the 2 third periods. Different story now on both of those fronts. Through the last game in 2012 we had given up 6 third period goals in 18 games. So far in 2013 its 8 goals in 10 games. Summerhays has struggled, giving up softies fairly regularly and I don't know that I have confidence in Johnson playing well two games in a row. I haven't got a clue who starts other than my gut says Johnson. If one or the other plays well and wins on Friday he'll start Saturday. If either loses Friday I'd bet the rent the other starts the next one.

So, I've been in Mexico and the team comes out and sweeps. Who is going to take up a collection to send me back there for a couple of months?

just remembered something- who was that announcing on Friday? not a voice I can place....

His name is Roger. He is the main backup for all of the off-ice offcials.

When you guys were down here in BG last year, most of us assumed it would be the last time we would be seeing you in our building (at least for the foreseeable future). Wouldn't it be fun if you ended up here for the first round of the tournament?

No. It'd be fun if you still had curling ice.
Besides, aren't you sick of having Michigan fans in your building? Every time I go to a game at BG, there tends to be a good showing of Michigan fans.

I've been a season ticket holder at BG for 35 years, and I never get sick of seeing the TRUE Michigan hockey fans, either here or elsewhere (although I will admit I wish we sold enough tickets to our own fans, so there would only be room for a few of you...preferably stuck in the smelly seats right behind the bench:) True UM Hockey fans are knowledgeable, passionate students of the game, who are a pleasure to engage in conversation. Sadly, many of the knuckleheads that choose to visit here are the arrogant, drunken dill-weeds whose only connection to your fine institution is the knock-off football jersey they bought from the Buckeye-Wolverine store that used to be in the mall...you know, the store that closed to make room for the Halloween Costume Center. These folks ought to be issued shovels, and ordered to dig their own graves before execution.

The curling rink is still here, but is now only three lanes instead of four. It's no longer used exclusively for curling, but has boards and glass for youth hockey, broomball, open skating, etc. The real curling buffs (all 12 of them) were not happy with this change, but as that ice was only in use about 8-10 hours a week, the change was LONG overdue...today there's something going on in there just about around the clock.

That's understandable. The ice was under utilized, which my friends and I would benefit from. Usually we'd rent it once a year and go curling...sometimes during the day before the Michigan at BGSU hockey game.
I just hadn't seen it pebbled the last few times I've been there. Probably because I'm never there during the middle of the week.

And now, back on topic. So, uh, Notre Dame tonight. I read one of their defensemen got arrested. Wait, that's still not that on topic.
Hopefully Notre Dame continues to slump, and Michigan takes the confidence from a sweep of Sparty and turns it into some more points this weekend.
