Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Hunwick's elegibility was used up. He was a 5th year senior who played 4 of his 5 years. NCAA rules state once you are on the roster of a team the clock starts and you have 5 years to complete 4 years of eligibility unless the NCAA grants you a medical redshirt. Were you guys yanking me on his eligibility?

I think you misunderstood. Alfa was saying that Hunwick was no longer eligible but Brown had a year left.

Ah, I see. I wasn't making an issue, was just confused on what was said.
I've heard some rumors that Columbus may have interest in him after the season but I have no confirmation on that. But if you think about it, if the Jackets were looking to use a pick in the draft to strengthen their goaltending reserves prior to the circumstances that brought Shawn here they may be satisfied now with what they see in him to sign him through next season and perhaps assign him to Syracuse and use that pick to strengthen their roster with a winger or center instead.

Any chance that the Wolverines will be coming east to play Bentley at the John A Ryan rink in Watertown next fall? That was a fun weekend for Bentley fans at the Yost this past October. Also, I like how you shunned an "off-season thread," as did we. :)

I doubt Michigan would do that next season. I can't say they will rule anything out once in the BTHC, but typically they only play higher profile teams on the road unless it is in some type of tournament. Most of their nonconference games are played at Yost. Glad that Bentley fans had a good experience, it is also fun for Michigan fans to meet fans from programs they haven't played or play infrequently (although the result against Union was embarrassing.)

I mentioned in another thread that outside of several teams in the AH conference (Sacred Heart, Army, AI, RIT, Robert Morris,Holy Cross and Canisius) that Michigan has never played before in their history, the only teams in established conferences they haven't played now are Minnesota State, U-Mass and Vermont.

Also: All-American Team goaltending I can live with Taylor Nelson, but Kent Patterson over Hunwick? Seriously? What a bunch of political bs.

Good news on the political: The ultra-WCHA bent is going to break apart with realignment. Minnesota will be a Big Ten school, and we'll get a fairer shake. And the NCHC guys will be a hedge against pro-Minnie bias.

Lots of change is coming. Being in the BTHC will be a strange new world.

This goes beyond the pale, though. Hunwick only wins the CCHA a couple of times and gets no love there. Takes his team to the NC game, shuts out UND in the FF semis, but no love last season on any All-American teams. This season, is the bridesmaid in the league (to both FSU and WMU) but has equivalent or better statistics as any goalie in the league (if you measure against # of games and minutes) and still doesn't garner ANY individual awards. Earns a Hobey Baker top ten nomination, but is again snubbed by All-American voters for a guy that gets bombed in the FF semis.

This was a big FU to Michigan and to a kid that deserves better- he was no Rudy- he was a legitimate top NCAA goaltender and this was nothing more than a kick in the nads. What a fricking joke.

Poetic justice would be Hunwick ends up with a NHL career and the others don't.

Musings from eLynah show a game with Cornell at MSG over USA Thanksgiving weekend.

I assume no Alaska exemption, given you had it last year?

Except those games were conference games and they were not exempt. Michigan probably will not venture to Alaska again (unless Alaska is in their cluster) unless they play in an exempt tournament in the future- which they did a couple seasons ago when they played UAAnchorage and U-Alaska in Anchorage.

The only non conference games we can confirm right now are against Michigan Tech in the outdoor GLI and the MSU/WMU loser/winner in either the consolation or championship game.

Not true. Any time you (as a lower 48 school) play against an Alaska team in Alaska (or a Hawaii team in Hawaii), whether in or out of conference, it does not count against your 34. It certainly goes towards overall and league records, but you then get 8 OOC games that year instead of 6, hence why you had 8 OOC games this past year.

Looks like there's also a rumour that RIT's shuffling out there for a weekend. This one might actually reciprocate, even if it's just one game and at the BCA.

Red has already confirmed that we're playing Cornell in "New York", still working out the details as to whether that will be Ithaca or New York City.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Michigan is committed to play a RIT at its homecoming in October 2013 during the first year of B1G Hockey. Not sure if it's one game or two.

So I would think RIT will be playing 1 or 2 games at Yost in the next few years.

Yes, you are correct. But, like I said, we don't know if Michigan will go to Alaska this season for either exempt conference or nonconference games, so to your original point, only two OOC games are confirmed with Cornell pending.

According to the musings on eLynah (Cornell's message board for hockey), it will likely be at Madison Square Garden.

Obviously this is all tentative (except the GLI); we won't know for sure until you see it printed on the tickets (and even then, it could be wrong).

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Hunwick's in net! And he was all smiles when the horn sounded!

What a story. Given the late season call-up, along with the single appearance where he never faced a shot on net or got involved in an actual play, there is only one thing that could make this better. He needs to retire right now and go into some nice honorable profession. Then in 75 years or so, when someone in Sasketchewan decides to build an outdoor rink in the middle of his wheat field, Shawn can come in and steal the show!!!! :D
