Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Jr. Chris Brown is off to the Phoenix Coyotes.

COY will have to find a new flag....

If he goes, I would more expect Merrill will go, since both had about a similar level of play maturity. Kind of shocking that Phoenix would even offer....

Joe and NCAA tournament appearances. Heartbreaking overtime losses. Unexpected, disappointing player signings. Some things are the same every year.

This offsets the thrill of seeing Hunwick in a League uniform somewhat. But only somewhat. It's a pity he's behind a guy who just got his first career win, but I'm sure Columbus will throw him in the lineup at some point. And for a guy like Hunwick, even if he never played in the League again, that would be a well-deserved thrill of a lifetime.

But, who am I kidding? Ladies and gentlemen, your 2015 Conn Smythe Trophy Winner, Shawn Hunwick! You know it's going to happen.

I would hope that even if his stay with Columbus is temporary he impresses the coaches enough that they get the word out that he could be a good pickup for somebody. A former OSU player I know who was in the minors several years ago would according to his contract get about seventeen thousand for any game he was called up for whether he played or not. Now I know Shawn has no minor league contract stipulating a level of salary but I hope he receives similar. Not a bad chunk of change for a kid leaving college to help get his start in the real world. Maybe an upgrade from the Ranger? lol!

Yep, at least it happened in March and NOT August. Coach still doesn't think that Merrill will leave, via media reports I have not talked to anyone with Michigan Hockey since Porter was there. From the things I read, I don't think Merrill will leave this year either, next year is a concern though.

With the way he played at the end of the year, I don't think he'll leave this year either. I'm curious how next year will shape up, we didn't have any go-to-guys for scorers but at least we had a 5th year senior in net. Next year we have no scoring (unless some True Frosh comes in an dominates, which has happened in the past) plus a true Frosh goal-tender.

Anyone know anything about the incoming recruits?

He did sign a contract through the rest of the year....

No idea how much though, anyone know what the league minimum is? That's probably it (although pro-rated since he's only there for a few more weeks)...

Of course the rest of the year ends a week from Saturday. It would sound a lot better if this were say December. Still he's a good kid and because of that hopefully good things will continue to come his way.

Just got back from Nationwide Arena. I went into the locker room and saw the modifications to Shawn's headgear - no more winged helmet. Apparently once was enough for Columbus though I'm sure he had Jack Johnson's vote to keep it . lol!
Sorry but sworn to secrecy on what it looks like now.

What about his leg pads? Those were clearly form up here.
All I can say is his gear was "modified". If you guys can get Fox Sports Ohio then you'll see at tomorrows game. There's absolutely nothing in the equipment room that fits the kid, you'd think pro teams never stocked gear for goalies his size.

As long as it isn't grey with buckeye stickers!

What a disappointment. I'm not convinced that he's ready for the NHL. His numbers at Michigan were good, but nothing special. He could have used another year to improve, and we could have used him. Unless he needs the money, why spend a year in the AHL instead of another year at Michigan? If Phoenix is sold and moves during the off-season (not impossible), everything there could be shaken up, anyway, and who knows if the new management will like him? He could be out of hockey completely.

lol! Nothing quite so dramatic, fortunately for Shawn, playing for the Jackets doesn't automatically give him Buckeye status. Now that you can see for yourselves I can say they just taped over his helmet and threw a Blue Jackets sticker front and center on it. The Michigan "M" on his pads were also covered.
If I understood correctly what was said at the arena yesterday Shawn should get paid the pro-rated amount of the league minimum.

Wasn't his eligibility all used up?
I don't wish an injury to York but I'd really like to see Shawn play in his first NHL game before the Jackets season ends in a week from tomorrow.
I really enjoyed watching him play during his career (except in his games against us) he's like the little engine that could!

Chris' heart is still at Michigan, but the opportunity to play with the big club is too great. They put some pressure on him to leave and, even if Berenson doesn't agree, Brownie is ready for the next level. It is just sad that he couldn't finish one more season- but the risk of being traded or being injured was a big factor.

Why would they stock gear for a goalie his size, if they don't have a goalie his size in their system?

Buckeye humor. Actually if you ever see the equipment storage rooms for pro teams they stock an incredible amount of gear for almost any contingency, but there are no goalies Shawn's size in the entire NHL.
Now do you see the humor in it?

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Hunwick, no. But Brown was a junior.
Hunwick's elegibility was used up. He was a 5th year senior who played 4 of his 5 years. NCAA rules state once you are on the roster of a team the clock starts and you have 5 years to complete 4 years of eligibility unless the NCAA grants you a medical redshirt. Were you guys yanking me on his eligibility?
