I agree with Alfa, they are putting like <strike>$14</strike>$16 million into renovating Yost. Work started on Monday. We will have Yost for a while, I hope. Here is a link.

How much money have they put into renovating Yost in the last 20 years? And this renovation will decrease capacity!

I think at this point it's kind of like Cameron for Duke. Could they make more money in a larger, more modern arena? Yeah, probably, but so much of the program's identity is tied to the building that it wouldn't be worth doing. Instead might as well make Yost as nice as possible. I think adding capacity is a gamble anyway now with the increased competition from basketball. A town of Ann Arbor's size isn't going to sell out two 10,000+ seat arenas 40 times a year.

Maybe it's me and my advancing age but it doesn't seem like it was too many years ago since the last upgrades to Yost, how long has it been? So what's with the new Windows? Is it aesthetics or will they be more efficient in helping atmosperic to keep ice quality up? I can't believe they're putting the fans aside in reducing capacity just so they can put in luxury boxes for the rich & influential. I thought Michigan took care of their fans and it was only Ohio State that screws it's hockey fans. :confused:

There have been a couple of changes over the year, probably dating farther back than I'm aware of.

But just after the '96 season, the whole north end was redone, probably the biggest undertaking by far- everything was gutted, and new entry, locker, weight rooms, more lockers, stands, second floor- you name it- everything was new on the north end in '96. (as a side, that's why the post '96 pictire with ALL of the trophies that UM won was taken someplace other than Yost- it's pretty obvious when you look at the team photo).

The rest I can't recall the years:
East side premium seats
west side press box
both sides- second level special seating
south side- new opposition lockers (that STILL needs work, IMHO)
middle- big screen
new PA a few times (I'm sure vox has some opinions of that)
Insulation
cooling
water/ice making

The reports of the new windows is that they are supposed to be very, very efficient, so that light can come in, but no heat. So it will look cool, and have some natural light as it did when Yost was first built. With the new Yost look alike just south if the building, windows would make them look even closer to each other.

Seat wise- from what I understand, when the wood bleachers are replaced, the new seating lay out will be more realistic, although still with benches. Not sure what that really means- but that's the main reason why the capacity is going down. Luxo boxes are going up high on the east and west side, and I'm not sure what's going to really happen to the press box area, except go up....

Oh, and with all of that, the new HD screen is supposed to go up higher, which will be nice.

The picture was taken at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. I do believe that the Blue-White game took place there as well. (In 1997)

Exactly. They are redoing the elevator to make it go up 5 stories and adding the press box above (and a little out toward the ice) where the current press box is. The current press area will be converted to all luxury boxes.

The spans that go across (where the banners are all hung) are supposed to come out. This will allow the board to go up another 8 or so feet. Hopefully, that will cut down on some of the lighting issues and pucks hitting the scoreboard.

So we can expect some screetchy, super loud, super soft, not actually audible sounds from the PA guy for a month or so next season, right? ;)

(remind the sound guys that tuning the PA without people isn't NEARLY the same as with people. Especially if those people are having a discussion of any type)

((oh, and that horn. stop the horn. we HAVE a band already- I want to hear the Victors, not a stupid horn))

Words of wisdom from a not-quite-old-timer. My most treasured piece of sports memorabilia is an original bench seat from Yost--scavenged from outside the arena during the 1996 renovations. If you're lucky, there may be some opportunities in the coming weeks for a comparable relic!

CCHA has their Top 12 plays of the year. I was not surprised to find Jon Merrill on two of these. BG's Williamson picked his pocket in the slot, turned and fired one past Hunwick. The other was NMU's Cherniwchan deking right by him to beat Hunwick (very Chris Brown-like). I wonder if Red and I are the only ones to think Merrill could use another season in Ann Arbor?

That's an issue to discuss after the season, but I agree, he was better defensively in his freshman year and showed greater intensity. While he can set up goals and steady the play, he has not shown the ability to take over a game like Torey Krug. In the BG play, he knew the player was there as he was checked behind the net. He either gave him no respect, or temporarily forgot about him.

I think sometimes he thinks he is Jack Johnson and wants to take it end to end. JUST MAKE THE PASS!!!!!

I don't think that is an issue unique to his BG giveaway; I've seen a number of skating clears by Merrill where he casually skates out of danger with a defender draped all over his back. He moves with confidence and it usually works; I just think that is how he plays. I know when I saw him do that against Miami I was actually impressed, thinking that his ability to move the puck from deep positions was an asset to the team and a factor in the resurgence. When it is successful he is "cool" and "stable." When it goes wrong we kickstart a highly improbably CCHA playoff run.

I hope he stays another year, and we'll need good defense with our question mark in net, but for all the flaws this year's team has (and there are many) I honestly have high hopes for Tampa. Perhaps not the dead-set confidence of last season--search my posts from around the Frozen Four last year if you want to find out about that--but we are in a strong conference this year and the random nature of the tournament means that anyone with a hot goaltender can do serious damage.

And I want that tenth banner.

I am SHOCKED no one has mentioned the CCHA awards yet.

BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Luke Glendenning, Best Defensive Forward and to Alex Guptill, Rookie of the Year! I can't think of any players anywhere in the league more deserving.

ROTY is interesting. As I recall, Zach Hyman was the highest regarded pre-season - when the season started Phil DeGiuseppe (I know I killed the spelling but hey, I'm a Polak) made a strong case but faded as the season went along. Guptill was consistent, steadily improving over the entire season with no reversals.

There's nothing I want more than our two seats when they tear out those bleachers, but it isn't happening. Thanks to the Athletic Department's longstanding "no memorabilia" policy with arena renovations. Those historic benches will likely be shredded or likewise dismembered beyond salvage before they leave the building. :\ But a guy can hope. I'll be on the lookout in the coming weeks, though wouldn't be surprised if any potential pile was being watched by DPS.

And to think how much money they could make...

Lots of credut to Bowling Green- they played a great game.

But we also gave them way too many chances to win it. The puck play is both sloppy and lazy, even into OT. Just horrible at times.

BG had a lot of puck luck- but Hammond played totally out of his mind- that kid can just play. The luck was more about the empty nets we missed a few times- and even the OT winner was a lot tougher than it should have been.

I said it in the score thread- BG is a very good team- no way they were the last place team. I expect them to be very good next season.

They're young and they're gritty. That program is moving up for once.

Honestly, thought that was the most fun I've had watching OT hockey in a long time. Great play from both teams.

With Minny and Duluth both losing, it looks like we are going to end up in the St. Paul regional. WE'll have a better idea tomorrow night.
