Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

With Minny and Duluth both losing, it looks like we are going to end up in the St. Paul regional. WE'll have a better idea tomorrow night.

I don't think that is a lock. If North Dakota wins the W tourney, they'll be in Minny. I think we are technically closer to Green Bay. Either way, we are going to be placed in the west with BC having a spot out east locked up and Union having a great shot at the other. But yes, too many determinants yet to be solved.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

I think I'm with streaker here. Michigan will be the top seed in the west (#2 overall), and they will get their closest regional--Green Bay. Also, consider that the other team getting a #1 seed in a western regional will be North Dakota or Ferris or Miami or Denver, and there won't be any compelling reason to put any of those teams in Green Bay...except maybe North Dakota, which would help attendance in a regional that will struggle to draw.

The only ways Michigan ends up in St Paul, I think, are if (1) Minnesota ends up at exactly #7 overall, and they would probably put us in St Paul under that scenario because they really seem to like preserving the 1-8, 2-7, 3-6 and 4-5 quarterfinal matchups whenever possible, or (2) Northern Michigan gets the right combination of results today to get into the tournament. If that happens, I think they will put Northern Michigan in Green Bay as the 4-seed at all costs, which would mean Michigan could not be the 1-seed there.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

Win today, and you'll go to Green Bay for sure.
With the right combo of other events, you might end up there as a #1 seed even with a loss today.
The chances of NMU making the cut are VERY remote, and if it did happen, there's NO way the selection committee would displace the #1 regional seed to avoid the conference matchup...they would move NMU. Even the NC$$ has SOME common sense.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Luke Glendenning, Best Defensive Forward and to Alex Guptill, Rookie of the Year! I can't think of any players anywhere in the league more deserving.

I also think he is VERY deserving of this award, but I couldn't help but laugh at this piece of irony; in the first period of last night's semi-final game, just as the JLA jumbo-tron was finishing the feature on Glendenning's award, he got called for hooking.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

Except for a couple of pipe saves, it could be western vs. BG for the Championship..............whoda thunk it!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

Alright. this isn't really a Michigan question but it DOES have a VERY remote connection - Western is sitting at #14 in the PWR, solidly "On the bubble".
If the invitations were being handed out today they would likely be "In".
When they lose tonight will they get an at-large invitation or is it season over?

We're fine if Harvard loses to Union. So they won't know during the game.

Edit: RIT beating Air Force helps too, since they somehow win their comparison vs. Michigan State if they win.

Does anyone care to speculate on who will be refereeing tonight's game?

McInchak and Pochmara did one of yesterday's semifinal games and Aaron and "Toad" Wilkins did the other.

I THINK I would prefer McInchak and Aaron. Just so it isn't "Toad"

I will be deliriously happy to see North Dakota and Minnesota both back in St. Paul next weekend. Let them have the region of death, even if it means that we draw a dangerous UMD team we all have bad memories about.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

This game (2nd just ended) is frustrating to watch. We had a lot of trouble controlling the puck, and just slapping at it. We, we are still doing that, and Western is taking advantage of it with 3 goals in 2 periods. We may get a great seed, but playing like this isn't going to get very far.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

They look gassed out there. Full speed, I think they can get around a lot of the obstructive play WMU is putting their way, but a step or two slow, it's just impossible.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

One last sendoff from the CCHA officials right there for Merrill. Thanks for everything, fellas.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

Merrill's butthole should be aching after that. That was an awful call.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

At least we get some rest now. Not a good game even with a good comeback in the third.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

It's looking like St. Paul, I'm not thrilled about basically playing Minny at home but what can you do? Who's going I've got a couple buddies who live 2 blocks from the X so I'm guessing that I'll be the drunk and obnoxious Michigan fan there...

I'm trying to find a siler lining in it. Hopefully tonight's game will both allow for some much needed rest, motivation, and realization that they must play the entire game, not just the 3rd period.:eek:

Don't book your tickets yet. I'm worried about St. Paul, but most of the bracket experts suggest Michigan is going to Green Bay, and that makes the most sense.

I'm not likely to be able to make either, especially since St. Paul is on Saturday and I have a hard time getting away Saturdays.

actually no, it is looking like green bay. With UMD losing, pretty much gave us the #2 overall seed in the tournament and trip to Green Bay.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread

Over on MgoBlog Alton suggested the dark possibility that NoDak might get sent to Green Bay with Ferris and Denver remaining, a combination that hadn't even occurred to me. He is basing it on his experience with committee action, and his experience is impeccable. It does give me some pause. North Dakota and Western together will probably draw more fans to Green Bay than Michigan and Cornell will. For that reason alone I fear this is a realistic option, though still unlikely.

#2 overall seed in the tournament

After our dreadful November this is still incredible. Michigan didn't look great today, but don't forget what an amazing second half they've had. I was thrilled just to see them in the top 16 of the Pairwise, and now we get to bring the Maize jerseys to Tampa if we are able to net the results.

We want Ten.
