Re: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part IV: You Guys Give Up, Or Are You Thirsty For More?

I think one of Tech's biggest problems is that they play Michigan or Michigan State in the first round every year. It would be nice if Michigan got to play RPI or Providence in the first round for a change.

This would be cured with winning the first game.

You can look at offense as well. Since Shelast said:
That's not quite true, both MacCleod and Bunger will go to the net but neither are getting a lot of ice time. Check out Kivisto's last goal if you have access to the video.

No, usually we would just end up playing Michigan or Michigan State. But it would be nice if we weren't playing the same teams every year.

I vote to get rid of Michigan State completely, but I don't see that happening.

I vote to get rid of Michigan permanently.

and if a frog had wings it wouldn't bump its *** when it hopped. All you need to do to win the first game is get a better hockey team. It's simple really.

I'm not a fan of Macleod, he is lazy defensively, and I think his ice time is too high to tell the truth. Bunger is a good point though. Also, The pp was weak IMHO with point men taking too long to do something with the puck, and the puck never going over to the weak side defenseman. We had trouble even in the 5-3. I noticed that msu forwards came back better and that allowed the defensemen to pinch more often knowing they will be covered up for. I think it helped them in the offensive zone.

Monster:

The other Michigan teams being in the GLi and rotating is how it used to be in the 80s and early 90s. they need to go back to it, yes, but it's not a new idea.

It is nice to see the USA team will be represented by a large number of Michiganders this year. Here are the numbers if anyone is interested:

5 Michigan
5 Minnesota
5 New York
3 Wisconsin
2 Connecticut
1 Pennsylvania
1 New Jersey
1 Missouri

Yeah too bad the Canadians and Russians are stacked like casinos...everyone goes in expecting to lose and only a few come out ahead...(And those few have likely been on the losing side way too many times before)...

Russian 1st line:

Datsyuk
Ovechkin
Malkin

2nd line:

Fedorov
Semin
Kovalchuk

The GLI... and then some good news to follow.

The GLI... and then some good news to follow.

Let's be honest, the GLI from a hockey stand point is all about getting Michigan and MSU in the championship game. They are huge rivals and to get the biggest crowd and best game for broadcast on TV (and ratings) they want UM and MSU playing in the final. Thus those two will never play each other in the first round. Think of it another way, if NMU and MTU hosted a tourney, you would want those two teams to face each other in the final because you know it would be a hot game - it always is. The real problem is that recently Tech has not been on the same level as UM or MSU and it doesn't matter who the 4th team is because Tech will never play them in the first round game.

Some folks on Facebook suggested that Tech pull out of the GLI because they can't complete. I don't see that happening either because 1) I'm sure they make some nice coin off the deal and 2) It's a big recruiting tool. Not for hockey players, but rather for future students. 2b) One could also argue that it is one of the largest Tech alumni gatherings outside of Homecoming and the August Alumni reunion. But enough about that until next year...

In better news, former MTU player Davis Payne has been named the interim head coach of the St Louis Blues.

Payne has been very successful as a coach - never had a losing season and won the ECHL championship with Alaska (2005-06) posting 53 wins in a 72 game regular season! It would be nice if they eventually remove the "interim" title and give him the job, but with only one year of experiance as head coach in the AHL that would be a stretch. And a rip off from Rocky III sums it up best...

Interviewer: What's your prediction for the fight?
Clubber Lang: My prediction?
Interviewer: Yes, your prediction.
[Clubber looks into camera]
Clubber Lang: PAYNE!

I think your hockey team's GLI performance may have poisoned your women's basketball team.......

Wow, thanks for the news on Payne. I didn't know he played for Tech, but I always admired him when he coached in Alaska. Too bad the Seawolves didn't have him instead of the Aces. Oh the possibilities that might have been.

So for my brother's bday, the family is going to a Plymouth Whalers (OHL) game. I just now looked at the tickets to see who we are playing... Windsor Spitfires. My immediate response was... ****. Windsor is 31-4-0-4 (W-L-OTL-SOL) and the Whalers are 22-17-0-1. Why do I have to be tortured like this? FML.
