Re: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part IV: You Guys Give Up, Or Are You Thirsty For More?

Back then you would hear "lunch bucket" or "hard hat" mentality to describe the team and their work effort. You don't hear that so much any more. Quality team D is as much a product of the kids willingness to work hard every shift as it is systems and coaching. There has to be a willingness to put out that kind of effort every shift and stick your body infront of those shots. Sometimes it's pretty hard to coach that into a kid.

You can look at offense as well. Since Shelast, who fronts up down low right in front of the oppositions goalie? NOBODY, they all play slightly off to the side or move out of the way when the shot comes.

IMO almost impossible to coach that into a kid either they will hang in there and sacrifice the body or they won't.

But that goes back to the kind of players we are recruiting...

It is an utter embarassment that they have not won their own tournament since 1981. I think it is time for Tech to begin thinking about relinquishing their hosting of this tournament. They could still occasionally participate as an invitee only if there record dictates an invite.

I don't think Tech is the sole host of it anymore.

Michigan Tech has cohosted the tournament with Michigan for quite some time and Michigan State has been a permanent invitee for years...as for not winning, it is really sad. One thing I would like to see happen is getting WCHA refs there once in awhile since it is cohosted by a WCHA team.

1980 is actually the last time MTU won the GLI...6 months after I was born :(
Since that win, MTU has only been in the championship SEVEN times and only THREE times since 1984 :( Not winning is one thing, but they have gone 0-2 FOURTEEN times since 1980...thats pathetic

It's not quite co-host and co-host. It really is still host and co-host. Tech has a bigger part in it, for sure... just not on the ice.

Re: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part IV: You Guys Give Up, Or Are You Thirsty For Mor

it would be better IMHO, if Tech and either/or UofM/State hosted and TWO teams came to play each year. I'm sick of GLI being a UofM/State showcase.

Oh I agree...I think the tournament would be better if something was done with having Michigan & Michigan Tech hosts and then have the 3rd team from Michigan (flip flop NMU and MSU?) and the 4th team as it is now...

Or how about we bring Wastern into this **** show (Ferris is too good right now).

rotate the Michigan teams? Western, Ferris, Northern and LSSU? I like that idea.

While it is fantastic idea, it won't happen. There's too much money riding on the the said showcasing of Michigan/MSU. :(

Re: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part IV: You Guys Give Up, Or Are You Thirsty For More?

I just want to know what happen to the solid defense we had? its one thing to lose many close games because you can't score, its another thing to forget how to play defense and still not be able to score...one of the biggest changes I've noticed since guys like batty and skworch left is the lack of shot blocking and quality defense from the forwards...

I wonder if Tech could get Batty to come in as an assistant coach or something, that would be awesome.

The GLI is Tech's tournament, they do the majority of the leg work and preparation for it. Michigan is a co-host mostly in name only. We just can't get rid of state because Michigan invites them every year.

I think one of Tech's biggest problems is that they play Michigan or Michigan State in the first round every year. It would be nice if Michigan got to play RPI or Providence in the first round for a change.

Now that would be a very cool idea. Get a few more teams in there a lot would give the GLI a good shot in the arm. Let Sparty go party somewhere else.

Good point. The GLI does seem to be pretty much a Michigan/MSU slobberfest. Why not get it out of the way already in the first round to draw a crowd for the first round of games, and with a little luck more fans will stick around for the second day of games.

If anyone cares, Durno is looking very good after 2 periods. He had a couple of shifts in a row early in the 2nd where it looked like he was going to score or at least get an assist.
