Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

For the pasty.net radio issue, it seems like there's a cap for how many can listen at one time and after that it can't connect. It's great we had more interest in people listening to games last year, but for Tech hockey to turn them away. Suzanne responded in an email late last season that they know it's an issue and "we are talking to the radio station regarding the broadcasts."

Because of seeing this I just sent Suzanne and Pasty.net an email regarding this issue in the hopes that they get that we really want it fixed.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Kauppila was drafted by Chicago (USHL) and attended their camp but did not make the team out of that camp...that is what they are talking about.

Goes to show how tough it is to break in to the USHL and even the NAHL as a younger player. All these coaches want to win to advance their own careers and they feel a lot more comfortable playing older, bigger and more physically mature players.

There's quite a difference between NAHL and USHL in speed and size. I've caught a few Green Bay Gamblers games and then saw the Janesville Jets play this spring. USHL looks more like D1 college, while NAHL looked more like talented High School play. Tech has a few recruits such as Reid Sturos who've looked good in the NAHL but struggled in the USHL. In Sturos' case, the NAHL seems to have really helped him mature. I'm now a lot more confident about him coming to Tech after his last season with Alexandria. Schools like Tech stand a good chance of recruiting top talent by watching the NAHL for these late bloomers that hit their stride at 20 or 21 as opposed to the blue chip 16/17 year olds from the USNTDP that tend toward B1G schools.

Except that the number of 20 and 21 year-olds in the NAHL that are actually good and fit what Mel & Co. are looking for (most importantly, good skating), are few and far between.

You're much more likely to see us recruit an "overage" USHL or BCHL player - those two leagues eventually land most of the talented, late-blooming 19-21 year-olds with a shot at being good NCAA players, even though they play significantly different styles of hockey.

I think he's talking more about finding the kids like Reid Sturos, Jake Kauppila, Chris Leibinger, Mike Neville that maybe are blossoming in the NAHL and will probably play a year of USHL/BCHL after committing, before joining MTU.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

At this point, I don't want to see Tech bringing any kid in directly from the NAHL. If they have recruit that is tearing up the NAHL, get him to the USHL for an extra year before coming to Tech. I don't think the NAHL is able to prepare players for NCAA hockey if they're going to jump directly from one to the other.

Ideally, I'd like to see Tech's recruiting to be 40% BCHL, 40% USHL, 5% High Schools (but only if the kid is good enough, so this is likely to be more like 0%), 5% USTNDP (Higher would be better, but I'm being realistic), 10% other junior leagues (AJHL, OJHL, NAHL)

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

A couple Stephen Anderson tweets from yesterday when he went to the season ticket event and the SDC.

-Still no decision on Reddick's extra year, if it's not granted he's looking to play in Vegas, his hometown
-Steve Shields is back in Houghton

You forgot one league. The Great Lakes Hockey League (Portage Lake Pioneers). Glad those days are over.

Actually that league is where former Tech players go after they wash out at MTU. I played against several of them over the years that were on the Calumet and PL squads.

I tend to agree with bb. Very few programs in the top half of D1 hockey seem to take more than one player a season direct from the NAHL, although Russell seemed to be making a habit of it for a while (Ryan Bunger, Ricky Doriott, Derek Kitti, John Kivisto, Carl Nielsen, Mikael Lickteig, Anthony Schooley, Aaron Pietila). My previous post was referring to spotting/developing upward bound talent in NAHL. Mostly, I was commenting on the difference in the level of play between NAHL and USHL, which frankly surprised me. Although I've never seen a Canadian minor junior game in person, I'd have to guess that the Alberta and Saskachewan minor junior leagues are also quite a bit more competitive than the NAHL.

Nobody would dispute that the USHL is the superior league. However, comparing the Green Bay Gamblers from last year to a mid level NAHL team is not the best comparison. Green Bay was clearly the best team in the USHL last year and quite possibly the best team in USHL history based on their record and championship. Green Bay could've beat a lot of OHL teams last year. The better teams in the NAHL are not as bad you think.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Anyone know about Patrick Anderson? Maybe a walk-on?

http://www.juniorhockey.com/news/news_detail.php?news_id=76130

Patrick Anderson, who played for Idaho in their inaugural 2009-2010 season, will represent the first former Idaho Junior Steelhead to advance to an NCAA Division I College hockey program. Anderson, a winger from Bismarck, North Dakota, played the last two seasons with the NAHL New Mexico Mustangs and will attend Michigan Tech University this fall.

Anderson was recruited by Huskies Assistant Coach Bill Muckalt. Muckalt coached the WSHL Valencia Flyers in 2009-10.

Evan Anderson - Penticton (BCHL)
Tyler Heinonen - Muskegon (USHL)
Jake Kauppila - NAHL/BCHL?
Chris Leibringer - Muskegon (USHL)
Joel L'Esperance - Tri-City or USNTDP?
Kent McPherson - Fisher 135
Michael Neville - Lincoln (USHL)
Joe Schuldt - Sioux Falls (USHL)
Dylan Steman - Cedar Rapids (USHL)
Reid Sturos - Nanaimo (BCHL)

To update the list, it looks like Neville was traded to Cedar Rapids of the USHL.

Anderson played for Muckalt in New Mexico (NAHL) and put up pretty average numbers as a second line forward.
He's an average size guy who hasn't statistically shown much improvement in his two NAHL seasons.
He's also 21 years old and doesn't look like he can spend another year in Juniors.
He seems like a long shot to make the roster, but maybe there are intangibles beyond the stats that are prompting Muckalt to give him a crack at it.

Who the hell is Kent McPherson?
he played in the Ontario Junior Hockey League last year and will have to sit out this year because he played a couple Major Junior games. He will be on campus this year but is not eligible to play until 2013-14, and will have to sit out the first few games of that season much like Taggart Desmet did.

Intangibles like he has pictures of Bill touching himself in a Wendy's parking lot?

Ah. I had never heard of him before, I usually keep up pretty well, but completely missed that recruiting news.
