Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

tMEL leaves and Red can't advance the Blue. Coincidence? I think not.

Mel was there three years ago when they lost to Air Force in the first round too, and that's probably a worse loss. Michigan losing has more to do with 1 seeds being a shade over .500 the past four years than anything else.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I made the trip out to the armpit of MI this year and watched both games at Amsoil, and I have to say with Mel at the reigns your team played the game right. Hard fought games and finally a coach at Tech let his team play. The previous 10 years every time I had watched Tech play it was dump and chase and your breakout is going to be throw it off the glass as hard as you can and hope one of our players gets it. I am very happy for your improvement and hope it continues and you'll be in the NCAA tourny soon. Tech fans are always a good crowd.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Interesting article by Matt Wellens about Tech hosting the regional in Green Bay.

http://www.mininggazette.com/page/content.detail/id/524800/Tech-crew-now-old-pros.html?nav=5009

I would love for college hockey to be more visible at the Resch.

I googled the playoffs and got tons of local green bay articles from last years event, but almost nothing from this year's. Her point about the HS event was especially well taken. Less often, meaning almost never.

I think this arena is exactly the right size for a regional and/ or the new WCHA playoffs, we'll just have to see if it works.

I also wrote to one of our SID guys about the neulion feed, but haven't heard back yet.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Just stopping by to say congratulations on the big turnaround this year! Happy for the fan-base and I see good things happening for this program in the coming years.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I am spending the week in Calgary for business and have been putting some Tech hockey items in the schedule as well. Had lunch with former Husky Paul Cabana to swap jerseys with him. He got his rookie season Manitoba Moose in exchange for one of his German gameworns. I'm pretty sure he could talk for days straight with stories about Tech hockey. It's always fun to hear the view of the guys. We see it one way as fans, but they have unique perspective on things.

Monday night I had planned on attending the Calgary Flames game and was pleasently suprised to learn that Clay Wilson had gotten a rare call up to Calgary (only his 4th game this season). I had Wilson's home white Tech jersey with me so I wore it to the game. He spotted it when I was shooting photos down by the glass during warm up and got a smirk out of him. Then I turned around and showed him it was his and he got a good laugh out of that. I'm sure that is not what he expected to see in the stands.

Today I'm headed up to Edmonton and planning to attend the Oilers game. I brought Sutton's first pro jersey from the Kentucky Thoroughblades with to wear to the game, but it likely won't get the same reaction as a Tech jersey. I'll put some photos up from the games later this week on my Johnson's Jerseys facebook page. There are also some photos from the Final Five posted there as well if anyone has any interest.

You must see some hefty airline baggage fees carrying all those jerseys around. You may have trouble keeping up once Mel starts recruiting those draft picks.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Some additional details today in the Mining Gazette on the replacement of the cooling system, it should be ready with the ice in place by August.
http://www.mininggazette.com/page/c...ystem-cooler-for-MacInnes-arena.html?nav=5009
The approximately $1.3 million project, funded through general revenue bonds, will involve ripping up and replacing the rink's concrete slab, 10 miles of under-ice piping, insulation, wire mesh, rebar, sand base, compressors and mechanical components. The rink has nearly a foot of materials under its surface.

And some video scoreboard info:
The ice plant project is the primary MacInnes Arena project this summer, but Sanregret said Tech is also looking into a center-hung video scoreboard for as early as September and as late as next summer, depending on fundraising and necessary infrastructure changes (production room and staff).

"The video scoreboard would just impact hockey, but the infrastructure would impact all the sports we webcast, so we're pretty excited about that," said Sanregret, who added the long-term master plan includes potential arena expansion on the east end. That expansion could include a walk-around concourse, larger weight room, band shell for the pep band and a VIP area.

"The dream is there, the concept is there, but we won't get working on it until we finish this next phase," Sanregret added.

Some additional details today in the Mining Gazette on the replacement of the cooling system... "10 miles of under-ice piping":

I'm no rink builder but that seems like an "out of thin air number". 5280 ft / mile x 10 miles = 52,800 ft of piping / 200 ft rink length = 264 pipe runs the lenght of the rink. Take the 85' width divided by 264 pipes and you get 3.8" center to center on the pipes. Seems pretty close together, but maybe we want to have the coldest ice in the new WCHA?

Elite status saves you big $$$. :) I'm all for Mel getting future NHL quality talent on the team, as long as they stay at least three years. One 'n' done, like most draft picks want to do I think would be a bad apple for a team struggling to get back on its feet. The team needs quality individuals, not just on the ice, because I'm sure there will be a few bumps in the road before Mel really hits his stride with the program. You don't want a stead stream of kids coming and going because then every recruiting class has to be 10-12 kids. Tough on the coaches and tough on the lockerroom as well.

Amazing the crap you can find online.

Value City Arena
10,000 gallons — amount of water needed to make 1" of ice/ 12 miles of pipe is laid under the floor to run the ice cooling system

http://www.schottensteincenter.com/default.asp?schottenstein=46

Rink pipe material (plastic/metal) and space sizing are questions of optimisation of investments vs. energy. The cooling pipes are mounted quite near the surface, in a concrete slab the mounting depth is normally 20–30 mm and the mounting space between the pipes is 75–125 mm. The rink pipes are connected to the distribution and collection mains, which are laid along the rink short or long side outside the rink. Rink pipes are laid in U-shape and they are mounted to the surfacing layer by simply binding the pipes directly to the
concrete reinforcement or to special rails.

I think they were spending quite a bit of money each year tearing up the cement in spots and fixing leaks. I also like the use of the heat from the compressors to heat the pool.

JJ very nice story. I had no idea you had such an extensive collection until recently.

Sounds really good that the scoreboard is linked to the upgraded video. I think this is what u of m did last year.
