Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Just tell us, I am quite curious and it's been a while now.
I'm going to guess they ordered a 34 and sent the wrong number.

Sorry, I can't tell you. I'm still waiting to find out the anwser myself. The numbers and names are done just across the canal in Hancock so I don't think that is the answer. My guess is that it is a tribute for something, but I don't know what it might be.

Ah, ok. Did he ever wear 37 in his past? I mean, if he had always worn 37 maybe they let him wear it because of that.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Anyone hearing anything out of the USHL camps going on? Lot of Tech recruits involved. Anderson-SF, Eick-GB, Heinonen-Musk, Kauppila-Chi, Leibinger-Musk, Lesperance-TC, Sturos-SF. Also heard Ben Storm was trying out in Muskegon if he is indeed a recruit.

Eick will be a Husky this season, Joe Schuldt was at Sioux Falls camp along with Reid Sturos. Evan Anderson is headed to Penticton in the BCHL the last I heard. Heinonen should be set with Muskegon while Leibinger and Storm will hopefully stick around there too. Kauppila and L'Esperance are both talented kids that should get a great look at their respective clubs. I expect everyone list except Anderson, Schuldt and possibly Leibinger to be in the USHL this year.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Chris Leibinger received a number of Twitter messages yesterday congratulating him on earning a roster spot with Muskegon.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

In Michigan Tech Hockey new today, the GLI was extended through 2014, the 50th season
2012: Wester Michigan
2013: Denver
2014 Western Michigan

Regardless of the teams chosen, I'm not a fan of bringing the same invite team twice in three years. When you heap a steaming pile of NaCHos on top of that, rather untasty in my opinion.

St Cloud was originally scheduled to be the invite team for 2012, but when it became a Comerica Park game, Western was a Michigan team that was able to clear the date for this season.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

The Denver choice is odd. Western, I get - they want to try and boost falling attendance, and WMU has the potential to bring in about as many fans as Tech does (though MAC football will always reign supreme there).

Lesperance was reportedly the best 16 year old at Michigans final USA select camp this year and will be going to New York as well. Typically they like to commit to a kid for two years but who knows, the USNDT may not be out of the question.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

After some digging, here is the run down of likely landing places for tech's future recruits:
Evan Anderson - Penticton (BCHL)
Joel L'Esperance - Tri-City (USHL)/USNDPT
Chris Leibinger - Muskegon (USHL)
Tyler Heinonen - Muskegon (USHL)
Joe Schuldt - Sioux Falls (USHL)
Reid Sturos - TBD, possibly Sioux Falls (USHL)
Jake Kauppila - TBD

In semi related news,
Ben Storm is likely to start the season with Muskegon (USHL)

I understand WMU one time. Twice in 3 years is really stupid. Inviting Denver at all is a downright embarrassment. The GLI has gone from a trip I normally consider taking to being a circus sideshow that i have no interest in supporting.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I've been to nearly every GLi since 1970, and almost always it was a top eastern team. The bringing in of western teams is not that attractive to me, as I'd much rather have a HE or ECAC team. Though I understand the attendance issue, I don't see DU drawing fans( I doubt Cc drew anyone two years ago) and it's hard for me to imaging hosting Denver and being polite. It's like hosting the guy who got your daughter pregnant, he might be a good guy but you are not happy with his act. Plus they hate traveling to Houghton, but Detroit is ok?, and why give them the publicity. If we have to have another Michigan team, lets have Ferris, (the WCHA teams need the help, the nchc not so much)

This might have to do with who was available but these three picks are not as good as the past teams if you ask me. Also it might be that the other hosts had something to say about it.
I think if Tech has better teams, more Tech fans will show up. In the recent past, routinely being embarrassed in front of your U of M co workers was less than fun.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

CC brought a handful of their players' parents. I figure Denver will probably be the same.

I agree the WMU repeat is unnecessary, but you have to look at it purely from the financial perspective of the tourney organizers. In the near future, I see the GLI primarily inviting other Michigan schools in an effort to maximize attendance, with an "outside" team appearing every third or fourth year. In fact, I am a little surprised that this hasn't been tried already, because it seems like ticket sales have dwindled almost every year that I've gone (since 2004).

Which is sad because Western's football team sucks. #fireupchips

Purely conjecture, is it possible that they could have already had WMU booked before the Outdoor GLI happened?

I also do not understand how Denver could be selected.
Why?

Could be for MTU's scheduling reasons. A potential "GLI, at Denver, host Denver" could have been agreed upon. Or it's just "GLI, at Denver" for MTU.

Or, UM/MSU have that agreement with DU.

It won't be MSU/UM...Michigan chooses to have Michigan State in the GLI every year, Michigan Tech gets to choose the other team...I highly doubt there is any kind of scheduling reason, Denver has never been mentioned in any of the non-conference discussions I've heard and there aren't that many NC games available to "need" that kind of arrangement.
