Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Is that Coin Collecting Corson Cramer's mask?
Why yes it is, and it arrived today. Here are some better photos. You can click on the image to view a larger version in a new window.
Enjoy,

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Notes on Jujhar Khaira from Hockey Prospect's 2012 NHL Draft Black Book:

Nov. 9, 2011 – USA vs. Canada West
CANW #25 (Jujhar Khaira): Regarded as one of the best prospects in the BCHL. Showed no evidence of that during the last 2 games. Is one of the bigger Canada West players at 6'1", 182 pounds, but played like he was about 5'5" out there. Got knocked around easily, had poor balance. Looked nervous with the puck. Didn't generate anything out there. Looked absolutely lost against better competition. He was ok defensively, was in the right passing lanes, but lack of speed showed when going after loose pucks and trying to get in a hit. Not a physical player at all. Showed no desire whatsoever all game.

Nov. 10, 2011 – Canada West vs. Czech Republic
CANW #25 (Jujhar Khaira): Played about 5 shifts all game. Was a grocery stick on the bench for most of the game. Took an absolutely idiotic penalty in the second period with a hit to the head along the boards. Plays like he has weights tied to his legs. Hockey sense needs work. Strength wise, against a small, young Czech defense, had a few instances where he controlled the play well, but the competition was bad. Not going to scare anybody with his speed. Needs to use his frame more for the team and show some desire to pick up loose pucks and fight hard along the boards. That is the only way he will be an effective player.

Notes on Tyler Heinonen from Hockey Prospect's 2012 NHL Draft Black Book:

Sep. 22, 2011 – Muskegon Lumberjacks vs. Chicago Steel
MS #27 (Tyler Heinonen): Playing with [Ryan] Lomberg and [Jordan] Masters showed good combination of offensive instincts and hands. Made some nice short passes on cycle, and scored a dirty goal. Just coming out of high school hockey, skating didn't stick out but wasn't holding him back either.

really nice!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I'm surprised there was not more discussion about the MTU Mount Rushmore. Obvious is MacInnes, Esposito, then it really seems to be a deadlock for the next two spots. There maybe two I would cut from the group quickly but past that I'd like to hear any arguments.

Would have to put Zuke on there as well, top scorer in program history, hard to ignore. The last I have a hard time with, possibly Randy McKay because of being a very successful NHL player after Tech, but is definitely a hard choice.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

As for the Mount Rushmore of Michigan Tech, everyone mentioned is deserving of a nomination:
John MacInnes, Tony Esposito, John Kosiancic, Garry Bauman, Mike Zuke, Al Karlander, Lou Angotti, Jamie Ram, Bruce Riutta, Hank Akervall

John MacInnes: Obvious choice, Michigan Tech was pretty much nothing before he arrived and has been pretty much nothing since he left.
Tony Esposito: 3-time All-American First Team, NCAA All-tournament Team, 3-time All-WCHA
John Kosiancic: 2-time All-American First Team, NCAA All-tournament 2nd Team, All-WCHA
Garry Bauman: 2-time All-American First Team, NCAA All-tournament 2nd Team, 2-time All-WCHA
Mike Zuke: 2-time All-American First team, 3-time All-WCHA (2 1st Team, 1 2nd Team), WCHA MVP, WCHA ROTY
Al Karlander: 1-time All-American First Team, NCAA All-tournament 2nd Team, 2-time All-WCHA (1st Team & 2nd Team)
Lou Angotti: 1-time All-American First Team, 2-time NCAA All-Tournament Team, 2-time NCAA MVP, All-WCHA, WCHA ROTY
Jamie Ram: 2-time All-American First Team, Hobey Baker Finalist, 2-time All-WCHA, WCHA All-Rookie Team
Bruce Riutta: 2-time All-American First Team, 3-time US National Team Member, 1968 Olympic Team Member (USA - 6th place), 2-time All-WCHA (1st Team & 2nd Team)
Hank Akervall: All-American First team, 1963 Olympic Team Member (Canada - 4th place), 2-time NCAA All-tournament Team (1st Team & 2nd Team), 3-time All-WCHA (2 1st Team, 1 2nd Team)

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Relax, those are older reports. He'll be fine.

There are many reasons to discount one scout's observations from two games, but I wouldn't cite a seven-month removal from currency as one of them. Khaira's competition has had the same amount of time to improve that he has.

Time does not mean effort, or purposeful practice. So remains to be seen.

Khaira had a pretty bad World Junior run. His output was way off his normal pace and he didn't really seem to click with the Canada West team. When he got back to Prince George, he picked up where he left off. I doubt his ranking was hurt by the WJC observations as he rose in the North American skater rankings after his WJC outing. He's also put on a few inches and a lot of size since then. Still, I'm cautious about overhyping Khaira. He's very young and will have a big transition playing against bigger, older talent. I'll be happy if he posts 15 points as a Freshman.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Khaira to Edmonton 63rd overall, 2nd pick of 3rd round. What I like about that is reading the other day that Edmonton has no immediate need for forwards, and can give him hopefully 4 years to develop (at Tech).

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

And Ben Johnson went ahead of Brady Vail! Terrific progress this year for the yooper.
