MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Well I wonder if there is anything else that went on a couple of months ago, because you don't fire someone with 23 years unless he did something wrong. Though I note the tennis coach is gone too.

I don't see how Bangen is responsible for the injuries. I don't think that is a rational conclusion.
Usually the trainer is the guy doing the taping, and fixing issues rather than putting out conditioning programs. I don't see that changing.
Its my understanding that he did't get fired...Michigan Tech decided to put someone else in charge of hockey and move Ipson to some of the D2 sports...He declined that and was fired.

The trainer usually does mostly care issues now but that was not the case before. If follow up and rehab was not well followed that can be an issue with the injuries.

You could make the argument that the S&CC has more to blame for the injuries as he did not prepare them. Over trained or had the players in the wrong phase of training.

If anything the guys were not prepared, to small, not strong enough or most likely bad luck. Another factor is losing. Empty training room when you win, full when you lose.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Training has nothing to do with broken bones, which seem to happen way too often with this team.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

At one time the athletic trainer did deal with the conditioning. That was more before and just at the beginning of Ippers time.

Now aren't the trainers really employed by the medical group and just contracted by Tech? Is Tech is going back to the older system where the trainer was internal?

I'm not certain of the arrangement that Tech has for it's trainers. But they do vary from school to school as to whether they are a university employee or if they are employed by a health care provider.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Yale asst. Kyle Wallack was hired to coach the Indiana Ice. It would appear that Brian Renfrew (and Pat Mikesch) is still in circulation.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Are there any other openings for head coaches in the USHL that Renfrew might be in the running for?

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

I told you all that they were just suspended, but no one believed me. Let the ****show begin again.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

They're on a tight leash now though. Next time board has to do something about them, they're gone.

I've been petitioning Flashy to start up a "members only" discussion board this fall...

There used to be one on the misfits site, but I think it died. I never used it, I don't have enough concentration to deal with posting on 2 different sites.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

What we could do is create a groupon here and have our own discussions. Or just join the one I have for the Misfits.

I didn't know there was a group, or that you could have separate discussions solely within the group. I think we should do a new one though, most of us aren't Misfits, even if we were when we were students.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

We could always just start having a Tech thread in the extras only section

interesting take on MTU hockey.

With that attitude you might as well go D3 to increase your morale. I would opine the team was demoralized moreso from the restrictive coaching style than the quality of opponents. Granted they made the NCAA's (autobid?) but I don't think it's coincidence that from the conference they have come from, they have only won one game. From every level I have witnessed, increasing your quality of competition during the season only helps you during the post season. I have nothing wrong with them wanting to remain status quo but stating from an outside perspective that a team is losing (and infers that team will continue to lose) because of demoralization from overwhelming opponents is a bit misconstrued IMO.

With that attitude, I'm glad we didn't go after him. I doubt he's in a position to state whether or not the MTU team was demoralized, let alone any sort of causation. I'd argue that going back just 3-4 years with a trip to the final five, MTU wasn't exactly failing. Not succeeding, but there are plenty of other D2 schools in the WCHA with whom Tech should be able to compete. In fact, with the departure of Minnesota and Wisconsin the WCHA is full of schools at a similar level to Tech with North Dakota and Denver being the only D1 schools (I didn't bother looking this up, so I might be wrong, but the general point remains valid).
