Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Recruiting visits have started.
I believe B.Pietila has signed his LOI.
Sounds like D.Johnstone is coming in this fall.

In a way, it's a little depressing that golf season is only starting.
What recruits are visiting?

Indianapolis, he's in the mix for the job there. Several candidates are in the process.

Doesn't anyone from the Paint Store have the SDC staked out?

Thanks to some digging around, I found a picture of the people who are allegedly behind all the info leaks. They do indeed fit the Techie profile:

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Just my opinion but Mel is still going to find it a tough road. If UM or MSU or minn, wants a player they are going to get him, whether mel is recruiting him or not. Either legally or illegally.
Our challenge now is to find guys that the big dogs don't know about.
Often at the big schools the recruiting system is quite formalized and it stifles them to some degree. With what Tech has to offer, we can be quite competitive for the players that for whatever reason fall thru the cracks and we might occasionally get a well known recruit.
We can also be competitive in places where no one has heard of the big dogs and could care less. So I for one am all for us getting a much bigger presence in Europe and in non traditional hockey places within the US.
I think we are going to see more and more kids coming from Florida etc.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

We're talking about a coach with almost 30 years of recruiting experience - I'm pretty sure Mel knows where the players he wants are :). The question is how effectively can he sell MTU to those players, as opposed to selling the block M? Based on his intro presser, I think he has a good idea of what the angle has to be. We shall soon find out if that translates into recruiting success.

Additionally, I believe in was manurespreader who once told me that for a recruit to want to attend and play for Tech, they have to believe that their game and development will prosper in Houghton more than anywhere else they're considering. Winning games and showing upward progress is half the recruiting battle, so I expect Mel to get the most he can out of next season's team, however the chips may fall.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Does it looks like Kyle Bangen is sticking around? Not to say he's to blame for all the injuries, but I thought with all the other changes going on maybe he would be out as well.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

FWIW, I wouldn't have posted that if Shelast and Gwilliam hadn't been mentioned.

Bangen's not going anywhere for the peanuts he's willing to work for, but I suspect (hope? :o) that his role with the hockey team will be limited at most.

It may be that Chris Ipson was the domino that fell when it came to addressing the injuries.

Yeah, I know. I suspect that Ipson's replacement will be handling the hockey team, and Bangen will deal almost exclusively with all of the D2 teams.

Bangen and Ipson were in different positions...Athletic Trainer vs Strength & Conditioning Coach
I believe Chris Ipson was replaced internally by Brian Brewster (or Nate Larson...not sure which).

At one time the athletic trainer did deal with the conditioning. That was more before and just at the beginning of Ippers time.

Now aren't the trainers really employed by the medical group and just contracted by Tech? Is Tech is going back to the older system where the trainer was internal?

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Well I wonder if there is anything else that went on a couple of months ago, because you don't fire someone with 23 years unless he did something wrong. Though I note the tennis coach is gone too.

I don't see how Bangen is responsible for the injuries. I don't think that is a rational conclusion.
Usually the trainer is the guy doing the taping, and fixing issues rather than putting out conditioning programs. I don't see that changing.
