Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I don't get into the high pitched squealing of sopranos too often, but I can definitely get into opera sung by a tenor or nice baritone.

Now, I highly doubt I;ll ever pay an arm and a leg to sit and watch a full opera that takes four or five hours. Not for me. But, I dig certain pieces from certain operas.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Opera? Aside from the aria (is that correct?) "Figaro," opera can suck a big rubbery one. And why Figaro? Looney Toons and Bugs Bunny, of course. ;)

Close! "The Rabbit of Seville" is the overture from Rossini's "The Barber of Seville."

I don't mind foreign language music (Gipsy Kings, Shakira, Rammstein, I like 'em all). Opera? Aside from the aria (is that correct?) "Figaro," opera can suck a big rubbery one. And why Figaro? Looney Toons and Bugs Bunny, of course. ;)
Isn't that a hotel on the strip?

One time, when I was about 30, I came inside from a day at the National Guard and my then wife turned on the tv. There was nothing on so we ended up watching La Traviata by Verdi on PBS. Within 10 minutes everyone in the room is in tears and from that moment on I was hooked. I don't know of another medium that portrays a story as powerfully or with as much emotion.

If you go in person, subtitles are displayed over the stage and the average length is about 2.5 hours including the break. Many Operas are in Italian, but some are in French or in German as well, and even a few in English. the Guthrie, in Minneapolis is one of the best places in the US to watch opera BTW.

Opera singers are not fat ladies any more either. Check out Anna Netrebko for instance.
Sopranos are of different types. They have voices that vary from very light like Natalie Dassay to heavy and powerful. It takes a lot of training to sing opera well, but it is good music, and just FYI pop singers are almost always electronically augmented so the voice is not theirs really.
I'm pretty sure Tech offers a course in music appreciation and I recommend it.

Old Guthrie or New Guthrie?

We finally got rid of dumb and dumber and now we've gone... opera?
It must be the off-season.

I think there is reason the conversation died, no one wants to talk about opera.

The only contact with opera is if tMEL gets to the point of having the fat lady sing.

Got my season ticket reminder today. We are being offered last years price on this years tickets for toughing out the last year of crappy hockey and the resultant turnover. New season ticket buyers will pay about $75 more a seat this year. Interesting.

Hey, someone's gotta help pay for that salary; might as well start now, milk everything they can out of the hire itself, and hope he wins something close to 15 games to get the buzz going.

Let's face it - regardless of what they charge for tickets, there are some elements of the Keweenaw hockey community that washed their hands of Tech's program ages ago. You'll likely never see those people picking up season tickets again unless Pearson builds Tech into a team that wins at least 20 games nearly every season (not likely, IMO).

Dollar Bill Wirtz syndrome. You wouldn't believe how many Chicagoans who swore off the Hawks after the 90's have tucked their tail between their legs and came "home" to the Blackhawks after two years and a Stanley Cup.

It's downright amazing to see how short memories have gotten and the wrongs easily righted.

If Pearson turns the team around, lucks into the making the WCHA super six, I guarantee you that the locals will be aboard that bandwagon.

The caveat is that the administration needs to be 100% behind Pearson and his commitment to change.

And the leak in the cooling system.
I think it's a little odd to raise prices after the last two seasons. Win some games, then raise the prices. It's empty enough as it is in that arena.

As I understand this it is not just one leak. I think this summer they fixed at least 6. The problem is that the tubes that carry the refrigerant are rusting out. It is going to need the entire floor removed and all new tubes laid down, in other words a new rink, all new cement etc. I believe it is in the works for next year.

I'll pay the increase and be glad to do it. I can't go to many games so anyone in need of a ticket can check with me and I might have two.

Oh I know, it seemed a little backasswards to me too. If the university is committed to righting this ship though, there will likely be other hockey-specific expenses going on the books soon, and not just the aforementioned ice plant re-do and (eventually) the new scoreboard.

If we're going to be a good, solid program again, we can't expect our AD to spend like we're a basement team, and the fans will have to expect to help offset some of the costs. I already figure that the supposedly 'new and improved' Huskies Live might be going up in price this year too.

As someone not up there with the last four years being the first in 22 years not going to the games every home series that is one of the things I am looking forward to immensely

And it fairness, the old prices were ridiculously cheap. They probably weren't going to get a lot of new season ticket subscribers after the last two years, so why not increase retention of current season ticket holders by giving them a "deal". I'm glad I'm not buying tickets for a family of 8.

Not to mention the economy. In the LSSU thread, someone pointed out that right now (and especially in this state), $5 pizza + a movie is much more economical Friday night entertainment for the average family of four then $50+ for four tickets to a hockey game. Throw in the fact that Tech has gotten killed in most games the last 2-3 years, and...yeah...
