Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I just hope Tech brings my Lakers with you, wherever you go.

...
I only wish your Athletic Director and/or President of the University had as much vigor as you and your posts.

Dr. Wong really stepped to the plate for NMU in the last few months, and he's been the one driving where the hockey program needs to be. The move to the WCHA is either going to be a home run, a base hit, or a line drive out. But no matter what, there's been someone who grabbed a bat and took a swing.

Who's on-deck at LSSU?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I took a look at the "whywestern" website. If putting a PPT presentation on a website is enough to get into the National, it's a worse conference setup than we thought. For all the grief we give Tech's athletic marketing, I've never seen anything that pathetic intended for a national audience. The only thing lamer than that website is the posts on the WMU new coach thread calling it "impressive".

I circled 3 weekends on the calendar with DU, UNO and UMD visiting. I'm concerned about that UMD series on the heals of back to back road trips to Alaska and then New York. That's brutal.

It does smack of desperation on their AD's part, but imagine if Tech did that - after Conner, the best remaining players for the "recent NHL regulars" slide would be, uh...Andy Sutton and Jarkko Ruutu? :o

At least you know of alumni still playing. WMU picked TV analysis as representatives of the sport from the school. Weren't there any current NHL players they could highlight? Couldn't they Google for a photo of Paul Szczechura?

The whole Why Western.com thing is an embarrassment.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Joe Corvo, Mark Letestu, and Pat Dwyer were listed. But yeah...
They must have updated it from when I saw it last week. They only had three NHL talking heads who were WMU alums as their notables from the hockey program.

Unfortunately the LSSU AD is a basketball focused person. She tolerates hockey as the #1 LSSU sport, but I think she would prefer basketball to hold that role. Aside from the overall federal/state economic woes, that is the next biggest threat to Laker hockey.

Do you want Mitch Lake back? He could be your AD.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I said "best remaining" - Scott only fights. Sutton can be a legit third-pair defenseman. I guess Scott could give Ruutu a run for his money, since Jarkko was mostly an agitator/Avery-type player.

It was suggested with slight jest, although technically no numerical limit was given on "the best remaining". It could be top 3 or 5...

Looks like this got lost in the shuffle (pun intended). Geoff Kinrade is taking his game to Europe, signing with HC Plzen of the Czech League. I don't have a link, the Nelson, BC paper is having technical issues.

Maybe I've been asleep at the switch, but I noticed that the Plymouth Whalers have signed a kid from Illinois that was on the Illinois U 16 team and was at the usndp national development camp.
Is it normal for these OHL teams to pick up americans before they graduate high schools? I would have thought he would have gone a different route.

Yes it is normal. They use players age 16-20.

Where were you when Ben Johnson signed?

Oh yeah, in fact because they bumped their draft-eligible age back to 15 about a decade ago, and obviously aren't bound by NCAA rules about contacting recruits before senior year of high school, they frequently ink some of the best 15, 16 and 17 year-olds before NCAA teams have much of a chance to talk to them.

It's a broken system, and the OHL plays it to their advantage. Unfortunately, it's something that College Hockey Inc. can't really do much about, other than try to educate young players about keeping their options open. The NCAA isn't likely to make any rules changes or exemptions for one, mostly non-revenue sport.
