Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Agreed on all counts. And I also did your Michigan Mining School logo.

If I could, I'd buy a jersey with that logo or the antique script 'MCM' from the early 20th century sweaters (even though an actual sweater would be more accurate). It'd be cool just to have as a 'blast from the past' sorta thing.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Competing for the MacNaughton doesn't even cross my mind. Tech is more likely to win a random, miraculous Broadmoor Trophy at some point in our lifetimes than they are to win, or even come close to, an 8th MacNaughton Cup. I'd eventually settle for a legitimate shot at home ice every 2-3 years, one or two NCAA appearances per decade, and as many berths in the GLI title game as possible, winning it every so often.

At the moment though, I'd settle for a double digit win column.
In my eyes, getting home ice IS a realistic shot at the mcnaughton. We should be a program that bounces around between 4th and 12th in the new WCHA. The problem is there have been far too many 9s and 10s (with 10 teams) than there were 5,6,7s :p

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

IMO, the teams who had a 'realistic shot' usually finish 1/2/3 and within 4-5 points of each other. I guess we're just looking at this differently.

The WCHA usually has a couple of runaways at the top, then 4th through 8th are all 1 point away from each other. And even the runaways aren't THAT far ahead. One badly timed sweep can mean the difference between home ice and a trip to somewhere like Grand Forks.

True, "running away" with the MacNaughton is generally considered to have anything more than a four-point lead on second. I'm just saying that there are usually three tiers in the WCHA. 1-3, 4-7, 8-10. With the two extra teams, it'll probably look more like the CCHA used to look like until their shootout experiment mucked things up:

-Three teams that usually compete every year chasing the MacNaughton

-3-4 teams gutting it out for 4th place (where Tech could be during a good year)

-3-4 teams who will occasionally surprise some opponents, but still do more losing than winning (where Tech will be more often than not)

-Two teams dressed in rags and drinking pints of MD 20/20 (where Tech is now)

Get this thread off Page 2 this instant.

We have 7 pages and 4,400 views. What the hell, people.

Come on, we can do better than MD 20/20.

And, I'm one of those people that believes Big Jim's Cup will be brought back to where it belongs, by winning the WCHA. Maybe only a few times, but it'll happen, and it'll be just as important to Michigan Tech as an NCAA victory.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

We suck and posting more in the offseason thread is not going to change that. :p

It's true, but it WILL help us regain our rightful place as the Official D-1 Chat Thread. :p :o Hell, RPI's on Offseason #3!

Do you propose that we start talking about diarrhea mouth in this thread too? I really don't see the need to discuss that in more than one thread. :p

Then why did you bring it up? :p

Though, we ARE part of the Legion of Shyte, so that might fit our persona. :o

I guess it's im's Foodmart now. :(

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

They could've at least been creative about it and made it "Jim's Food art", or "Jim's F art" or even "Jim's Fo rt", but no...they made it "im's Foodmart"...

Today at the paint store I learned the Keweenaw was priority strike target for the Soviets during the Cold War as funny as that sounds. Apparently the Calumet Air Station handled much of the radar information for the stations along the north range of Canada.

Yeah, that's why they had bomb shelters and everything.

The Soviets were a bit behind the times. Thirty years earlier, when the Keweenaw was still one of the world's top copper producers, sure. By 1965, not so much. Still, with a few thousand nukes, why not plunk one down on a research university and a (fading) industrial area?

Calumet Air Force Station would have been a good radar post for defending Chicago and Detroit, though.

However, even up until 1960, there was still some hope that the industry could revive itself if the next big lode was found and the demand for copper rose again, causing prices to rise above the local cost of production.

I personally think there's still some copper to be had, but the easy, super-rich lodes have been cleaned out. Nowadays it would be a matter of how much money a company would be willing to spend digging, versus how much net profit you'd end up realizing. Obviously, the costs are still too high and other mining regions are easier, cheaper, larger producers.

I was about to commend you guys for staying on topic for once, and then this happens. ;)

And who steals a J? Seriously. Though, this is the same town where someone broke in to Dominos to steal Garlic-Butter Sauce and some soda...

Also the same town where amateur graffiti ran wild a couple summers ago.

Of course, that same summer in Calumet some kids broke into a Jeep, went for a joyride, then drove it into a pond. So clearly the real hoodlums hang out up there. ;)

Blame ctf. She's probably one of the hoodlums. :p

Have you ever tried that garlic butter sauce? I'd classify the break-in as a necessary risk.

Oh, how disappointed they would be when they realized what they actually wasted a nuke on.
