Really? If it were real butter, sure, but it's just rancid soybean oil and iffy garlic. I could make far, far better garlic-butter sauce without the risk of jail time. :p (not that anyone ever gets arrested in Houghton, aside from the occasional drunk)

It's hard to bomb the Keweenaw any further back in time. ;)

Definitely wasn't responsible for the J. I've been on my deathbed for a few days now.

Also, I always wondered why it said fallout shelter outside of the middle and high schools in Calumet.

Well, there are computers there, I figure a nuke would probably work at knocking those all out from being useful. I wouldn't hold much hope at it at killing off the WoW fans at MTU who will have nothing to do with no computers. Them, Rats and Cockaroaches would survive a nuke.

The Houghton City Courthouse also has fallout signs on it...

And Jimmy John's...good if you want a sandwich from somewhere other than Subway ever once in a while

The fallout signs are nothing special. Across the U.S. every city had fallout shelters during the the Cold War. In my town I know both the courthouse and my elementary schools were both fallout shelters.

When are people going to figure out that you would make a killing in Houghton if you put a Chipotle or Qdoba at the old Burger King location? Hopefully the Jimmy Johns puts one of the Subways out of business.

All of the Subways (including Calumet) and God knows what else are owned by the same guy.
I've heard Calumet is the most profitable, which makes sense.

Nope.

The Keweenaw Rocket Range was waaaaay out on the tip of the Keweenaw, past Copper Harbor on the shoreline, and was (I think) property of the University of Michigan. Nothing stands out there anymore, though I haven't visited. Calumet Air Force Station isn't as far - it's on top of Mount Horace Greeley, about a mile and a half south of Central Location. Google map link

Now, I'm taking this time to tie everything we've been talking about together. The Calumet Air Station was later turned into a juvenille correctional facility which, you know, might have been where they'd send said "hooligans" if it was still open. :p

Ahh. Figured as much. Last summer MEg and I tried to get the tip of the Keweenaw (needed an ATV me thinks). I was looking around on Google in the area and found that. I love finding stuff like that on there.

Not that I would ever trespass, but if I did, I would have gone up to the old radar base/juvenile correctional facility and seen creepy things like a bowling alley with a falling ceiling and three inches of standing water, a door being barred shut with a bent rifle, and a garage with nothing but a battered wheelchair in it. :eek:

An ATV could probably get back there, from what I'm told, but it'd need more than a sedan. ;) Also: Google Map and Wikipedia link

Funny about your non-trespassing.

When it was actually used, my dad worked there, and I ran up there with him on a really rainy night. That was creepy to begin with, but then all of the boys were in the building where my dad's office was. I was maybe 12.. They were 13-18ish. Hadn't seen a girl in who knows how long. Yeah. I was glad to get out of there.


....Remind me why I went to Tech?
