Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

I agree with all of these points. It would just be foolish to drop the series entirely given the geographic factor, but the rivalry is on life support.

Not even Fight Night at the Berry was able to breathe any life into it. :(

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

To be honest, I think the rivalry peaked when Northern was in the WCHA and eight conference points were on the line every season. That ship has now sailed (probably for good this time).

It's difficult to maintain a strong OOC rivalry. To use an NHL example, would Blackhawks fans save all their vitriol for the Wings if Detroit played in the East and they only faced off once a season? Probably not.

Three years ago, when we thought Tech might be going somewhere, the season began with a hard-fought 3-2 loss to NMU. Chances at both ends, good hits on both sides, etc. Those are the kind of games both teams have to be able to put together for the rivalry to matter again.

That said, I think that last season's results pretty much affirm that playing strictly for UP pride doesn't mean squat to either team.

Kero is Fargo’s first-round USHL pick
HOUGHTON - The Fargo (N.D.) Force continued its focus on the Upper Peninsula Tuesday, selecting Hancock native Tanner Kero with its first pick, the 13th overall, in the United States Hockey League's Entry Draft.

Kero starred at Hancock High School before earning rookie of the year honors in the North American Hockey League last season with the Marquette Rangers. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound, 17-year-old led the NAHL in goals last season with 32 and added 19 assists for 51 points in 57 games.

He finished the sesaon as a plus-9, recorded 13 of his tallies on the power play and had five game-winning goals as the Rangers won the NAHL's North Division before suffering a first-round playoff upset.

During the season, Kero committed to play his college hockey at Michigan Tech, likely enrolling in the 2011-12 school year.

Kero's selection comes just a day after the Force, the USHL's playoff runners-up, picked Calumet High School and Ojibwa Eagles product Ben Johnson in the USHL Futures Draft.

It also came in a first round rife with connections to the Copper Country and northern Michigan at large.

The second pick, John Fritsche (Youngstown) played with Marquette's NAHL North Division rival Alpena, while fourth pick Joel Benson (Chicago) not only played with Alpena but hails from Marquette.

Third pick Peter Stoykewych (Des Moines) is the younger brother of incoming Michigan Tech recruit Adam Stoykewych. Both brothers are committed to WCHA teams, though Peter has committed to Colorado College.

Reid Sturos, selected immediately after Kero by Omaha with the 14th pick of the first round, played for Brighton High School last year.

He is a cousin to Calumet High School's 2009-10 hockey captain, Nate Sturos.

Sturos told his hometown paper, the Daily Press and Argus (Howell, Mich.), that he is committed to play at Tech and wants to study mechanical engineering after his junior stint.

I missed that Ben Johnson was chosen in the entry draft.

Since he'll only be 16 in the fall, I assume he'll play a third year for Calumet, then head to the NAHL for a year if Fargo doesn't think he's ready. That is, unless there's an NAHL team who is interested in bringing him in this fall.

That's what happens when your crack ass school insists on having their rivalry games while no one is in town. And maybe if your women started putting out more and getting aids, we'd have a stronger dislike towards your school, adding fire to the rivalry. Talk to your womens.

This should be our final schedule...

This assessment from the Western College Hockey Blog made me get happy feelings inside.
Fargo got what I think was a steal in NAHL forward and Michigan Tech recruit Tanner Kero at 13th overall. Kero chose to stay close to home and play for Marquette in the NAHL last year, and ended up leading the league in goals, which is remarkable for a 17/18 year old. If he fills out physically, he could be a great player, and might be a sleeper for the NHL Draft.

I'm holding off on doing the happy dance until he lights up the USHL. He's going to need all the muscle he can safely add this summer.

Still, if he continues to develop, it's going to be nice to have a player who seems to think "shoot" first.

In order to get someone who fits the requirements, Tech has to pay for them. they won't come for 40K and an expense account.

If JR is making $110k (last I heard, anyway), I'm sure the assistants are making more than $40k.

My WAG is prob about 60-70K base.

At that amount you could live pretty well in Houghton or Hancock, and still sock away a nice chunk of change. If your loyalties are elsewhere and/or you aren't too enthused about the UP, you could do what Tok did and just put up with the area for the sake of a few years' experience.

My bet is that they'll find someone young who is looking for exactly that.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Why is Tech one of the very last D-1 teams to release their schedule every year. Our schedule isn't that complex, the WCHA games are released to them over a year ahead of time, the GLI is always set for 2 of our non-cons, 2 others are tied up in the LSShowcase and the other two go to NMU. Scheduling the NMU games and another pair of games if we go to Alaska shouldn't be that hard.
