And Reid Sturos was taken #14 Overall by the Omaha Lancers

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Good news. Of course, both still have to attend fall camp and earn a spot on their teams, but if they were first round picks then there is obviously a good amount of faith in their current skills and their potential.

We will never forget.

Maybe we should build a monument to make sure future generations remember.
What? 2 statues next to each other...a Washington Capitals logo and a giant screwed up SAT test?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

In alumni news, Rob Nolan took the Flint Generals to the IHL's Turner Cup finals, but lost the series to the defending champion Fort Wayne Komets, 4-1. The trip to the finals required overcoming a 3-1 series deficit against regular season juggernaut Muskegon.

Unfortunately, there is doubt as to his club's status next season.

Sounds like a great idea for Winter Carnival!

About Nolan, he did have a great play-offs. What people don't know is that he had the flu, lost about 16 pounds, came in and won two great games.

The Northern fans are discussing dumping MTU from their schedule.

Don't they realize that this series is the most fun because of the U.P. bragging rights at stake. The games are usually heated and bring out the competitive spirit in the U.P. fans.

Any word on candidates for the assistant coaching position yet??????

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

If we end up without a nmu game, which I think is a bad idea, I'd like to see us pick up something that helps, or at least might help recruiting.
Also I too am curious on the hiring progress.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

To be fair, the rivalry is not as heated as it used to be. Sure, there's a few more penalties, maybe the occasional brawl every few seasons. From what I've heard about the past though, it's not on the level it once was.

I think this may be an instance where Tech and Northern could consider ditching the Superior Showcase and work together to schedule a couple non-conference opponents as a sort of "Yooper Icebreaker". Similar to how UAA and UAF host and play in each other's showcases, but have another weekend to meet and settle the Governor's Cup. It would have to be on a smaller scale though - two opponents and one weekend. Swap opponents between Friday & Saturday, and probably expect to reciprocate the following year. This may be a good way to target some of the ECAC schools that have an easy 'travel partner'/geographic rival.

Nevertheless, it's funny how NMU wins 20 games, goes to the tourney, and all of a sudden the fans think that other schools are beating down the door to schedule a non-conference series at the Berry with them. Northern's notoriously cash strapped athletic department schedules Tech because it's convenient, inexpensive, and historically cute to do so. The series with Tech isn't going anywhere until a few million in travel expenses magically appears in their bank account.

Now, if both these teams happened to be decent for a spell, the rivalry could certainly gather steam again.

On the contrary, I remember the Coach saying something about lining up FIVE games with NMU next year. I don't remember how he got five, but this would involve two home and home series' I believe.

I agree with all of these points. It would just be foolish to drop the series entirely given the geographic factor, but the rivalry is on life support.

Oh good Christ. Please tell me this is an error.

Clearly, this could have new life easily breathed into it there was a prank pulled off that involved taking something of value from the campus of one school and having it appear at the other campus. Something that would likely involve the use of a truck perhaps. That or the MTU crowd putting something that would be mildly offensive to NMU fans on top of the superior dome.
