I'd hang out at the paint store today to catch the latest ...

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Just an FYI... there was a nice interview on 970 AM out of marquette on the Sportspen show with Coach Whitten. In a nutshell, he discussed how excited he was to be coming to Tech and how his job will be starting immediately with doing some recruiting in lower michigan while he is packing up for the move. He also spoke about playing under and working with Coaches Comley, Shyiak and Mason.

I think it's no accident that MTU chose to have an assistant coach who is from the Detroit area. And to think this will not boost recruiting and or committments from that area is foolish. The first place a coach is going to recruit is from his home base, as long as there's sufficient talent to do so. And there's a lot of families with ties to the Copper Country who just happen to live in that area who produce some pretty darn talented hockey players. Tech now has an "in" with Coach Whitten. It's time to take advantage of that.

two seconds after my post...here it is...the news I heard about...

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech head women’s basketball coach John Barnes has resigned to accept an assistant women’s basketball coaching position at Wisconsin. The three-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year wraps up his seven-year career with the Huskies with a 155-56 record (.735 percentage) and the second-most wins in school history.

“I can’t thank the Michigan Tech administration, staff and community enough for all they have done for me,” said Barnes. “Their support over my career has been outstanding. I wouldn’t change one second of my time here and will be cheering on the Huskies from Madison.

“It was a very difficult decision to leave, but this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I’m very excited about the chance to coach at Wisconsin and in the Big Ten.”

Barnes took over the women’s basketball program in 2003 and never had a losing season. His teams won 20-or-more games four times, earned three GLIAC North Division titles and advanced five times to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies were back-to-back NCAA Midwest Regional Champions in 2009 and 2010. Three players were All-Americans under his watch, and the team ranked in the nation’s top five in team grade point average three straight seasons.

“To say that we’ve been pleased with John’s work at Michigan Tech is an understatement,” said Michigan Tech president Glenn Mroz. “He came into a good program and pushed it to make it great. We thank John for all that he’s done for our students. We’re confident he’ll continue his strong performance in Division I basketball and look forward to following his career at Wisconsin.”

Barnes becomes the second former Tech women’s basketball coach to work in the Big Ten. The Huskies’ winningest coach Kevin Borseth is currently the head coach at Michigan.

“We have a track record of coaches moving on to Division I positions,” said Tech’s director of athletics Suzanne Sanregret. “We thank John for continuing our tradition of excellence in women’s basketball and wish him the best.

“We will begin a search for the next head coach, seeking an individual who will continue our tradition of success both on and off the court.”

Barnes, who was a student-athlete and assistant coach with the men’s program prior to being named women’s head coach, will finish 18 years at Michigan Tech on June 30.

The search for Michigan Tech’s eighth head women’s basketball coach will begin immediately.

There'll be more prestige in this gig than running video for our program :D
Best of luck both for Mr. Whitten and the MTU program. Could a promotion for him be far behind ??

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Word at work today is that someone heard through the vine that there's suppose to be a breaking news story out of the athletic department today...

Anyone know anything about this?

I figured at first that it was just typical UP news taking forever to keep up with the Whitten story. But apparently they ran that story right before they said this...

So, I guess we wait...or maybe the vine is a little twisted and no "breaking news" will happen...except for ctf robbing her new place of employment

Oh shush, you know you enjoyed our little chat there yesterday :)

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

The Barnes announcement isn't that surprising. It was inevitable that he'd get a job with a bigger program.

Best of luck both for Mr. Whitten and the MTU program. Could a promotion for him be far behind ??

A promotion to lead assistant if Mikesch gets a head coaching job elsewhere next summer? Maybe. A promotion to head coach if Russell is canned next summer? Nothing against Whitten, but that's doubtful.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

For the record:

I was only still there, so that I got my card back, else I would've driven away...far away...and fast...

At least you're one of the smart customers who remembers that they need their card. I've had SO many people in the drive thru leave theirs.

MICHIGAN TECH CANNOT HAVE NICE THINGS.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

MICHIGAN TECH CANNOT HAVE NICE THINGS.

This is a vacancy they'll have very little trouble filling, IMO. There will be several coaches looking to take over a small, but winning program and build their resume.

But enough about women's basketball. :D

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

I'll coach the women basketball team. Have you seen that team picture!?! :D

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Article about Whitten from a county paper. Apparently he interviewed for the Finlandia job earlier this year, and had a side meeting with Russell while up there, which got the whole process started.

@Suze - yep, been in Anchorage since March. Took the apartment in Midtown. Already taken my new Jeep through the Whittier Tunnel. I see about a moose a week and had a black bear go running around the parking lot at work. It's disconcerting to be winding down at 11 at night and it's still light out :D

Whittier is one of the few places I have not been. I have friends who own Lazy Otter Charters in Whittier, and they keep telling me to come down and get some fresh shrimp from their traps. Maybe this summer.

As far as the light goes, you need block out shades, they are great. I couldn't sleep without them. Hope you are having fun here!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

This quote made me chuckle a little.
"There is that stigma that if you're not a great student you will struggle," Whitten said. "But they have majors for people who aren't into math or science. You can work hard and be successful in school at Tech."

Well, I think he majored in communications at MSU, so he'd know all about taking the easy road. :D ;)
