Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

First, congrats to the Hawks. They've been waiting for their next cup for a long time. I think this was the first time I watched a team skate the cup and thought "man those kids look young"...

Now, we can all get on the Maple Leafs band wagon and pull for them to end their cupless streak, but they don't look nearly as promising as the Hawks do for the next 3-5 years.

Being a big fan of Roenick growning up, it was hard to watch him at the close of the telecast as he watched the Hawks skate the cup. You could tell he is one of those guys that winning a cup would have really been the pinacle of their career, but sadly he never got there.

Ryan J

And another pick-up arrived last night during the Cup Final...

Sort of a low blow, wouldn't you say ??? But then again, your choice of major and intelligence level go hand in hand. Yeah, that's for sure.......

Long time no rant, but I have lurked on occasion over the past 4 month. I know you're all dying for my opinion on the end of the season, so whether you want to hear it or not here we go:

The Denver playoff series was a valiant effort, but at the end of the day we had guys who were scoring their first goals of the year asked to step up and get the job done. We were lacking Olson, Royer, and several other Top 6 forwards, so it's worth saying that if this injury plague continues unabated for a third straight season, there is no hope for anything better than yet another 10th place finish and the whole staff should be canned. A solution HAS to be found, people, whether that's giving Bangen his walking papers this summer (not happening, according to my internal source ) or whatever it takes. It's not just bad luck at this point - the coaches are creating that "bad luck" somehow and they need to sit down, determine the source, and snuff it out.

Whitten will be a good hire for us. As a former walk-on, he knows what it's like to battle for ice time. As a former 2nd/3rd liner, he knows what it's like to have to earn your goals and assists. As a former team captain, he should be pushing everyone to be the best they can be out there.

The 2010 recruits...I've seen some of these guys play before and others I can only speculate based on what I've read/heard whatever.

Players we're probably going to like

-Furne: Seen him in action. Plays a solid two-way game and has a championship pedigree in both HS and the USHL. Played legit high school hockey (everyone knows real men play MN HS hockey ;)). I like this kid, he should be good to fill Olson's shoes when he signs next summer.

-Rix: Going off reports. Pretty solid for a four-year AJHLer, but don't expect him to blitz the WCHA in his freshman season. I'm worried that that a lot of his points could be attributed to playing with linemate and UNO recruit Zach Raubenheimer. We shall see, but keeping the team healthy so that he can develop line chemistry with someone would help a lot (and not just him either).

-Sova: Was the best defenseman on a mediocre team and chipped in a decent amount of points too. Championship with the same HM team that Furne was on. Should help us out on the back-end.

Players we might grow to like

-Hietala: Seen him play, but it has been a couple years. Hometown kid, will play any role that he's told to play. Only medium-sized, but works hard and led his SJHL team in regular season scoring, though he didn't have a good playoff showing.

-Gubb: Big frame that he uses pretty well. Can't see him being a star player on this team, but he could definitely be a capable second or third liner for us down the road.

Players we might be iffy on

-Stebner: Had a nice playoff run with his Alberta team. Plays an aggressive game and will hit/fight with anyone (though he can't fight here, obv). Could end up being the next Kerr/Doriott, penalty-wise, though.

-McCadden: Said to have leadership skills and plays hard. Did captain Green Bay's championship team this year. We'll see.

-Johnstone: Got off to a tough start as a very young player coming straight out of the MWEHL and stuck with a terrible Green Bay coaching staff. After the trade to Sioux Falls this year, finally managed to post decent numbers. We'll see how he adapts to the WCHA.

-A. Stoykewych: We definitely got the lesser of the Stoykewych brothers. I see him being a frequent healthy scratch his first year, but you never know.

The good news is that there should be heated competition for ice time, but again that will require them to stay healthy. If that happens, I could see 8th or 9th place. I don't know if that will be enough to say that Russell has earned an extension though.

We shall see what unfolds, and I'm looking forward to October.

Maybe I missed this, but is he any relation to Jane Hietala, our hockey secretary?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

I managed to dig up this article on the Stoykewych brothers from a few months back. It's from Rivals.com's college hockey section, but someone posted the whole thing to the CC boards and I found it when I went Googling for articles...

Basically, Adam is a defensive-minded forward whose MJHL coach thinks he will contribute mainly to our PK, "though he does have some offensive upside" (translation - when NMU's goalie opens up his pads to scratch at his crabs, Adam can shoot the puck five-hole :p).

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Well, I think he majored in communications at MSU, so he'd know all about taking the easy road. :D ;)

Communications? Easy? Try writing for a newspaper for awhile, and then tell me if that's the easy road

F2B&G was a business major. I currently am one.

HOWEVER.
We must keep in mind that it is not nice to diss business majors, as RobGreen is one, and it is not nice to be mean to RobGreen.

There's a distinction to be made between the various concentrations though. Accounting/Finance/Operations/MIS folks usually have a brain. Management majors give the rest of us a bad name. :p ;)

The A students correct the work the B students did, and they're all managed by the C students.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Holy frigging Christmas. Check out the rules updates.

Among the howlers:

- Contact to the head is now a 5 and game. Tech must have gotten 3 of those a game last season.
- If you score on a delayed penalty, you get the power play anyway. Double your pleasure.
- No more "obtainable passes" to negate icing calls.
- ICING CALLED ON THE PENALTY KILL.

Just...wow. Tech is going to lose every game 10-1 with like 30 PIMs.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Well, I can guarantee everyone that our powerplay will finally click at over 20% next season.

Our PK, however, will be right back into the sub-70% range. :(
