I'm about 99% sure that Mel is completely out of the picture now...With him out of the picture, it falls to a traditional national search with multiple levels of interviews and such. I have a feeling Suzanne will figure out the field of 10-15 candidates, and have a phone chat....then probably meet with the finalists while everyone is down in Florida for the AHCA Conference (April 28-May 1). I don't expect a decision now until May 2. That is unless Michigan Tech attempts to focus in on someone like Cary Eades and go at him hard like they did Mel. Obviously with the $$$ rumors floating around, maybe they do try and poach a coach like Jeff Blashill or Frank Serratore but who knows. Very hush hush now on anything related to the Tech opening.Does the first domino have to be Penn State in order to look outside of the old alumni hockey base?
Curious if anyone heard anything further in regard to Mel?
Am I missing anybody that you think is a strong candidate?
Shirtless is right. from the Paint Store. its very hush hush.
That was the case with ALL of the "Mel Pearson turns down Tech" articles...it was all about Red's chat with Mel on Sunday night...thats why I was so confused since supposedly Mel was in Houghton monday...that made no sensePretty much what I expected, though I was hoping to hear more about Mel's change in mind. I would think they already had a list before speaking with Mel, and now they are doing more homework before making contacts.
Did anyone notice in the last article about Mel he was not actually interviewed just Red.
After "giving his blessing." Why the hell would Mell need anyone's blessing? He's given Michigan 23 years...but whatever, ****** Mel, moving on...back to the top of the list where Cary Eades name remains.it seems a little strange. "Mel's not going anywhere", like Red got to make the decision.
I've never done Toby Keith's on a wednesday night before**** it. Let just go drinking.
I've never done Toby Keith's on a wednesday night before![]()
This is my order:Here's how I see the people you have:
Eades, Larson, Guentzel, Gibbons, Pooley & Cole: would be strong candidates, but do they want the job?
Carlson, Hartzell, Montgomery, Patrick, Rud: their teams are still in the USHL playoff, would have to wait unti they are done for on campus interviews. Of these, I think Rud and Patrick are the strongest candidates.
Rolston has no interest in coming back to Houghton.
I think Coghlin would be good if he is interested, especially if he can bring along Mazzoleni as an assistant.
Serratorre: is he interested, and can he get out of his AFA contract? Is Tech willing to buy him out at Air Force?
Markell: has very likely applied and he does believe he could win at Tech.
Since everyone else is drinking i guess Ill have one or seven too
If this isn't done in the next 30 days...I'll "eat my hat" (I really don't know what to bet). The announcement will probably happen within a week of the end of the AHCA Conference. All you might have to drink for one or two months before a coach is introduced.
Cue the Dumb & Dumber picI'm about 99% sure that Mel is completely out of the picture now....
I'm not sure I agree...Mel was the guy they wanted...they swung and missed...now they have to figure out what direction they want to go...nothing about this process is really known...maybe other candidates have been contacted, I'm not hearing anything but I didn't hear much about Mel until Friday of last week. It certainly is better for Tech to keep things quiet. Annoying to us but better for the process. Hopefully guys like Eades and Guentzel have been contacted and interviews have been scheduled, etc.The only reason for the Penn State "shoe to have to fall" is if MTU's administration let's it. The talk of having to start over, or wait three weeks, is beyond belief. If it's that disorganized maybe you should just bury it.
There is no correlation between the candidates at PSU and MTU. Totally different pool.
So you swung and missed with Mel ~ get over it and move on. The lists on the site are ripe with good candidates, but if one or two haven't been in Houghton by the time the coaches meet in Naples, they'll at be laughing at Amateur Hour in the UP. Once you start the process, you better be willing to see it through or it appears confused and unplanned. Precisely what no coaching candidates want to see from a prospective employer whose support they will need to right the MTU program.
