[Mel] is a top recruiter familiar with recruiting for a school with high academic standards...

Wait, I'm confused. I thought we were talking about the Mel Pearson who coach at the University of Michigan all this time...

JJ, they have a high academic standard...for the non-athletes.

I highly doubt that...It is a raise from his UNO salary and getting Mel Pearson is still a hell of a job.

The reported $250,000 was Blais base salary prior to the extension he signed before the 2010-11 season and doesn't include any bonuses or media deals, camp income or other income. And don't forget his top assistant at UNO was making more than Russell made as head coach at Tech. Was Tech able to give him significantly more in guatanteed income and likely to be earned ancillary income? Was Tech willing to give him the kind of money for assistant coaches that he needed to bring along or attract the type of assistants and staff that he wanted? Whatever the case, if the Pearson is indeed the guy, it is indeed a great job by the AD and the Tech administration.

And State does? :p

Or any other D1 football school for that matter. The SEC is an even bigger joke.

ha! State doesn't either. not many of the football and basketball programs do. I knew a guy who played for Michigan under Bo. his class load went like this :
weight lifting, football coaching 101, football reffing 101, reading 101. ok, ok not reading 101, but the rest was real.

Lots of folks give athletes hard times for getting a business degree at a top engineering school, but at least it is a legit degree that offers the promise of a good job when they hang up the skates as a profession. I was surfing through the Niagara web site the other day and two of their players have "Academic Exploration" listed as their major and they are already in their second seasons... I can only imagine what sort of classes might fall under that heading.

During the F4, I noticed at least 4 Sioux players had the major of "Recreation and Tourism Management" (or something like that). Knowing someone who did indeed major in that, it's a joke major.

I know one tech hockey player was getting his degree in biomedical engineering.

Anecdotes from 40 years ago stopped being relevant about 25 years ago.

They gave the student athlete of the year award thing on TV to a guy who majored in "Entrepreneurship"

FWIW, Eidsness graduated in 3 years (or will graduate this May I should say) from the Business School's Entrepreneurship program. It was rated a top 10 Entrepreneurship program in the United States by the Princeton Review.
