If a decision really was made this quickly, I have a pretty strong feeling that it's Pearson.

I guess we'll know Monday morning if the paint store got the right info.

I'm a bit surprised if Mel is actually coming to Tech if the rumors are true.

Red must have told him that he is planning on coaching even longer than his current two years remaining on his contract.

I'm just wondering if the BTHC soured on Mel.
Now all of Michigan's recruits will be heading North

All signs are pointing towards Pearson, how many people does everyone think Suzanne interviewed?

It seems like a good hire, I just hope she did her due diligence.

So from multiple sources, KFAN wasn't completely wrong...Michigan Tech did throw big money at Dean Blais, and he said no...so MTU brought in Mel Pearson and he will be announced as Michigan Tech's 22nd Head Coach. It will be interesting to see who ends up as Mel's assistants and whether or not Ben Johnson decides to commit to Tech based this hire. Expect an announcement next week, probably Monday.

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

Blais was allegedly offered $300,000

I almost guarantee it was because they knew Blais wouldn't accept, and then MTU could say they tried getting the best. Blais is grooming Guentzel or Hastings to be the next coach at UNO, guaranteed. He's retiring after his contract is up.

I highly doubt that...It is a raise from his UNO salary and getting Mel Pearson is still a hell of a job.

Not knocking Mel. But from the get-go the rumor was that the UNO thing was Blais' last run, and he got to groom the next coach. That's all I'm saying. Blais wasn't and isn't going anywhere but the old folks' home when his contract is up.

I'm not going to say it wasn't a waste of time trying, its not like MTU is bragging about trying, I highly doubt MTU ever admits that Blais was offered anything. I'm sure "officially" Mel was the guy they wanted from the moment Russell resigned. Why would MTU even want to admit that they tried to get Dean and he said no even though they offered him a 20% raise?

Getting Mel Pearson is considerably less of a job than getting Dean Blais. Mel's an alum, his kids are college-aged, and Berenson will seemingly coach until he's discovered dead in his office. The Michigan gig is awesome, but 23 years of being an understudy is enough, no? So you offer Pearson enough money and he will likely come. Throw Blais a Godfather offer, and he's still likely to refuse it. He's run his own ship and he's been to the top twice. He can afford to be very picky.

That said, don't get me wrong. Pearson will be a good hire; with his resume honestly, if he can't right this ship, I question whether anyone can.

In case any Negative Nancys raise some questions about not going for guys like Blais.

Ok, let's say you're Scooby, and tDon has left his position, and MN is looking for a new coach. MN offers one of the Serratores, better yet, Red or York a contract, knowing full well that they won't leave. The Scoobys will ask why didn't we go for the best? MN's answer? We did. They refused.

Same with MTU. MTU can honestly say that they went after the best, and were refused. Doesn't matter if they KNEW they would be refused. The fact is that they tried to get the best.

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

No offense but honestly I'd prefer Mel.
First I think his track record at Michigan is a very clean program. Second, he is a top recruiter familiar with recruiting for a school with high academic standards, and is also familiar with the politics of school funding within Michigan. Third, he knows all the top amateur coaches around Detroit and in Minnesota, forth I think we will see a much different team from a system point of view. I don't think we lose anything in coaching quality and gain in other ways. Plus he has the potential for staying around more than Blais would have.
So I like his roots, I like that he has a record keeping kids in school and graduating them, I like that he wanted the job and I like how suzanne ran the job search. I think the hire will help the university not only with hockey but with overall fundraising.

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

Pearson it is.

That would really suprise a lot of people here in Ann Arbor. Based on the past, we all thought that Tech burned those bridges, but it seems as if our impression may be wrong.

And to be honest- I think most down here would wish him anything but the best up in Houghton! So if he's the guy- good luck!! We need more top teams from this state!

(and IMHO, IF this happens, Tech will be better than State. Even with the precieved recruiting issues you all have, Mel seems to be a much better coach than Anastos will be)

Isn't that more than Glenn Mroz makes? I'm shocked they were able to offer it. I initially guessed that Pearson was basically a done deal before the position even opened up.
