Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

Within that article is the main reason why I believe Mel will not come back to Tech. Has nothing to do with Red and it's part or some said most of the reason he left.
I find no where in the article where it states why he left. Did I miss it?

Never said it was obvious, but I know many would LOVE to know the answer.

I would guess Herb Boxer played a part in his decision to leave;I'm sure if I did some digging I could find out although I don't think it matters anymore as indications are that he would be an interested candidate.

I wonder if working for a bigger, more prestigious university with greater resources and one on the verge of turning the corner, for significantly more money and a chance to advance his career had any part in his decision...nope...gotta be Herbie's fault. JSR...how old were you when Mel left Tech? Ever actually met Mel or Herb?

No but I learned enough from his post game interviews to understand that I wouldn't want to be a part of his coaching staff or team because nothing was Herb's fault and also heard enough about Mel that he would want out of a negative situation; Boxer was one of the most negative coaches I've heard. Eight years removed from John Macinnes and Tech's glory years, you're telling me if Tech continued that success with a good coach throughout the 80's, Pearson would have been just as anxious to leave? I agree it was a great move for him but I don't agree it necessarily happens if he was enjoying success with a legitimate head coach. And like I said it's a moot point because that was 23 years ago and now he may be looking for a new challenge as talk has indicated.

I'm assuming you'll be sporting this jersey at the final four festivities this weekend?

So again, you don't believe that Mel left to further his career and make a bigger paycheck? And you were how old when Mel left?

Herb Boxer ended up coaching a Memphis team in the CHL and coached them to the championship. Herb hasnt coached since but look Mel Pearson must have made the right decision because he is still coaching college hockey.

I wonder if it's ever occurred to Mel that both the U of M hockey and basketball arenas are named after football coaches even though they've won national championships in both sports. Hockey championships don't carry much weight at U of M so I hope he's getting a good salary.

If Mel finally becomes head coach at Michigan, he can only fail because if he wins, he'll just be continuing Red's legacy. Legends in sports and business are made by turning around unsuccessful programs, not maintaining winning programs.

That is part of the reason why Mel left, in fact was at his going away party. There is a bigger reason he left besides the basic fact that most ***'nt coaches should see a few places to see how it's done and not done. It was not about Herb, and I don't believe Herb was that negative. If you had the feeling he was so negative it was because he wanted Tech to succeed more then most think and it ate at him that it wasn't happening.

And when he left Tech, it was nowhere near the depths it is now. It was a .500 program. And there was no place for him to move up. Michigan was just starting to mature into a national power. And made him an offer. With Mel's help, it has risen to and maintained status as a perennial national power.

As for the assertion that Herb is negative from someone who has never met him (JOHNSCOTTROCKS) and was lucky to be on training wheels when Herb left Tech, I've dealt with him at both the college and pro level, pretty straightforward guy. Sometimes when you are having a tough season, honesty can seem negative. It's the reason many coaches and athletes just give the media the same old stock room cliche answers. If you are a winner and you are honest, you are arrogant. If you are losing and you are honest, you are negative.

One must remember that is his UM salary only. It doesnt include bonuses, hockey camps or other ancillary income. Remember that Berenson's salary shows there as $215,000, but his actual income sits in the $375-400,000 range. I would hazard a guess that if Mel were offered a total package of $150,000 to come back to Tech, it would likely be a lateral or downward move, income wise.

Hopefully, you are wrong. They need to put up big money for a stud head coach who has proved himself like Jackson and Blais. Unlike what have they done in the past hirings ie Boxer, Narhgang, Mancini, Watters, and Russell. The only good hirings but only for short term were Brown and Sertich. We need to see a long term solution not anymore short term solutions.

The program needs a coach that will show who is the boss. Similar to Mancini and Anzalone. Somebody who is going to change the program around. A take charge guy which i hope Eades and Pearson are.

Yeah, you sure need an Anzalone...a guy who won 32 games in four years in his last foray into college coaching...great suggestion...and he's a guy who has kept just one job for longer than four years since leaving LSSU in 1990. He's had 3 one year stops and two 2 year stops. Long term solution there.

I meant that the huskies need a take charge guy thats not going to take any bull****. Vince Lombardi would be better. Anzalone and Mancini is the type of personality they need at tech. He did win a National Championship. I didnt say they need Frank himself to coach.

I disagree that he is wrong. I think he is mostly right, at least on the salary. This is not a surprise in the slightest!.
And a take charge guy? As if the other guys did not take charge? of course they did. but they failed anyway.
What we need is someone who can coach hockey. PR might be nice but I'd prefer someone who can actually coach hockey first please.

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

As I said earlier it's not that hard to find salaries at a public institution and you are right it does not include camps etc. The cost of housing is cheaper in Houghton. Regardless I don't see Mel coming for other reasons even if they did up salary and more.
UMD Scott A Sandelin 2007yr Head Coach 139,250, DON LUCIA HEAD COACH 453,825

I'm quite sure all the other coaches took charge but really it comes down to recruiting doesn't it? You have to sell the university education, the outdoors, and most important a recruit that wants to build a program. The kid that probably got turned down from another place, that may have a chip, and potential to grow and be able to coach him up.

Are those guys out there? Yes, look at Air Force and how far they took Yale.

Not sure why so many of you seem down on Herb, he did better then many and he had guys that went pro.

This is quite true, and a plus for MTU's recruiting of a coach - nowhere to go but up. The same could be said for Cary at UND.
