Michigan Tech 2014-2015

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

Next three GLI tournaments will include
2015: NMU
2016: WMU
2017: BGSU

That list makes me feel like the tournament is losing it's luster. The occasional team from WCHA/Michigan is ok but I want some variety. Someone from out east, someone from NCHC (besides Western).

3 out of 4 years having in involve a WCHA team isn't good. In the day and age of the PWR, another game against the WCHA doesn't help the league or Michigan Tech. I'd say the WCHA shouldn't be involved more than once in 3 or 4 years.

Totally agree. However I think it's about the money, period. I'd like to see more east coast teams.

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

agree. agree. agree. more different teams, not WCHA and Big Ten teams. we already see enough of them. bring us something new.

It was awesome to show the GLI on tv, but in today's economy, several fans are lost as it is easier to stay home and watch all the sports going on and celebrate the season.
I hope the tv coverage continues, because it is really good exposure to the great sport. I am disappointed that the GLI cannot draw a complete sellout, but tickets are cheap compared to the money spent on a full day at the Joe.

I would like to see Providence, Boston U, and Maine selected after this next run. Impressions yesterday were positive, I am not sure of all the comments of disinterested or not complete games, Tech looked really good this weekend, just ran into the old cliche against Michigan of doing everything, but scoring. Every college hockey weekend there are examples of a game where the shots are doubled up, but the dominating team loses a close one. From watching live, the players that stood out were Gould, Hanna, Kero, Kile, Copp, Hyman, MacEachern, Deblouw, and Darnell, Lowney, and Schempp.

I'm not sure that they played any better in the second game, but they found theback of the net enough to win. So take the win and move on.

I would agree with the sentiment that the fourth team in the GLi should be from the east or NCHC. I don't think 4 Michigan teams helps the PWR, and it doesn't help the attendance as we saw Sunday night. The place emptied out after the Tech UofM game. What helps attendance is Tech coming in with a strong team.

And see...I told you...put L'Esperance in there ;)

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

It has been stated by me before and I'll say it again, the WCHA (and at times Tech) need to take their marketing / promotions to another level. When the WCHA turned 50, they promoted it with a 1" high patch on the back of players' jerseys neatly hidden under their mullets where no one would see it. When the GLI turned 50, they designed a custom logo and then used it for what????? The cover of the program?

Your event which you claim is one of the premier tourneys in the nation just turned the big 5-0 and you couldn't even bother to throw a $3 patch on the jerseys, much less come up with a unique jersey design for the teams? I've seen more unique marketing done for local PeeWee tourneys...

I am seriously considering designing a logo and offering to produce / buy the patches for Tech for their 95th season. One of the longest standing programs in the nation and they just let all these milestones fly under the radar rather than touting what a proud program / league / tourney we have. Sad.

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

Hey guess what guys, I think MTU is getting screwed in the PWR ranking simply because they played LSSU first.
Depending on rounding errors from the info provided by http://siouxsports.com/hockey/rankings/rpidetails.php?teamid=4
MTU's RPI should be somewhere around 0.0179 points higher when listing an RPI as 0.####, not ##.## as SiouxSports.com does on their PWR page.
Michigan Tech would be likely around 4th in the PWR instead of 6th. Not sure how those changes adjust Quality Win Bonuses or anything else...

The GLI started losing luster back in 1979 when they included MSU every year. Before that, there was a nice mix of teams. If they want to include 4 Michigan teams every year, they need to expand the format to 6 or 8 teams...

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

They showed they can skate and move the puck well, However they definitely didn't have much fire and grit. The way the series ended back in October, big hits and lots of talking, I figured both teams would come out with a whole lot of Attitude. That wasn't the case. Hoping to see them salvage a split to day. A little more fire and a little more puck luck around the net.
I read that FOUR UofM players were not at GLI because they were playing in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship. So Michigan had FOUR of their best players missing and the #5 Huskies couldn't take advantage of that?!?!

Let's start a fund to pay the Tech coach a $50K bonus for a GLI win. Maybe that will help generate some "fire and grit" and get us a win more often than every 30 years...

Obviously in hockey there are games where you dominate but don't get the bounces... time to start fresh, I'll be looking for 8 or 9 wins in January to get set up for March. Looking forward to attending the Northern game Jan. 10.

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

Well, the GLI title would have been nice, but I won't throw the baby out with the bathwater, as they say. I think they are set up well to get home ice. I think they should be right there at the end for first place. And I think an NCAA birth out of this season is a very real goal. And Yes, it is a game of bounces/inches. I just watched the tape of the game.. really amazed to see just how close some of those came to going in (and both Michigan goals were deflections). And just how close Gould was to getting it all tied up as time ran out. Just off the heal of his stick. They/we/Some People, need to put it in the past and focus on the Badgers and then NMU.

I've got 31 tickets on my desk that have me focused on the Badgers.

Also... Kohl center rules say blankets are allowed... Loophole? I have a Tech hockey blanket.. :D

I was hoping to see better marketing for the 50th GLI but I believe they put all the marketing money in the 49th outdoor GLI.
The 50th GLI sure was a big marketing flop.

A friend of mine is planning on making the drive over there. Tech should be well represented. The game is supposed to be on TV, the BIG 10 network?? I'll watch for the blanket!

31 Tickets? Are they all spoken for or are they really that easy to come by?

I'm hoping for a sweep this weekend against the Buckie's!

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

I would be a lot happier if the pp were on track and getting good chances.
Looking at other teams near us in the pwr, it's a crap shoot. We just have to keep winning and more importantly, keep getting better.

I'm looking for Colgate to make a big run coming up and it's hard to see some of the eastern teams near the top losing much.

And if you didn't notice, Nick Bugstad, from Minnesota just signed a 4 million dollar deal.

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

I'm hoping for a sweep this weekend against the Buckie's!

This weekend will mark the 155th and 156th meeting of Bucky and the Techies dating all the way back to 1922. Over the years, 83 games have taken place in Madison where Bucky sports a 60-17-6 record vs. the Huskies. This coming Jan. 11th/12th will mark the 41st anniversary of MTU's historic sweep at the Dane County Coliseum in 1974, with Tech winning 4-1 and 6-4 on consecutive nights for the only time in history at the Badgers home ice. Put another way, MTU's record on sweeping in Madison is 1-40 (.024)

Additionally, the Badgers have not lost a game on the weekend coming out of the break in 8 years (11-0-3) and Mike Eaves is 17-3-4 on this weekend in his tenure at Wisconsin, never having been swept.

Given all that,

WHAT POSSIBLE CHANCE DOES TECH HAVE TO SWEEP THIS WEEKEND!?

Wait. I'll just go ahead answer that for you...

Probably a pretty good one! :o :(

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

Interested to see if Blacklock and E. Anderson get some ice time in the second half.
The drive to win the WCHA and make the tourney starts and based on the GLI, Tech needs to settle on the best team lineup going forward.

Happy New Year to all.
