Michigan Tech 2012-13 Season II - Beware of Huskies in the Spoiler Role...

Re: Michigan Tech 2012-13 Season II - Beware of Huskies in the Spoiler Role...

Mel talks abotu some possile tweeks to the schedule for next year, home/home with NMU likely for both weekends with them and a Wed/Friday or Wed/Saturday weekend at Fairbanks is a possibility

Nov 1/2 will be non-conference on the road, Nov 8/9 will be nonconference at home

I wonder about Mel's non-conference philosphy, it's a tough non-conference scheudule, not saying we need AIC, but they're some tough teams and wins are good!

Just saw the UND tweet about TV this weekend, FCS Central Friday and Saturday, FCS Pacific Sunday if needed

Also, one things I've been wondering, has anyone been following how Mark Evan Auk's transition from the NAHL to USHL has gone?

So based on Mel Pearson Show, it should be something like this to start the season:
10/11/2013 @ UMD
10/12/2013 @ UMD
10/18/2013 @ ND
10/19/2013 @ ND
10/25/2013 vs NMU
10/26/2013 @ NMU
11/1/2013 @ MI
11/2/2013 @ MI
11/8/2013 vs MSU
11/9/2013 vs MSU

Thats a b! of a schedule. I think its a good philosophy but I don't think it'd be bad to have not taken the ND weekend and taken a series with an ECAC team...

Very nice pictorial article in this month's USA Hockey Magazine about the Calumet Coliseum and Copper Country hockey in general. It kind of snubs the Dee, but all in all, a nice piece.

I love that schedule. I like the high expectations being set by Mel. For far too long, the atmosphere around the program has been one of mediocrity at best. They'll be battle tested when they get into regular conference play(note Tom Izzo and MSU hoops program. Always a tough non conference schedule and always ready come tourney time in March) It helps too if there's ever a scenario where Tech is a bubble team for a possible at large NCAA tourney bid. I'm not exactly sure of the guidelines the selection committee uses, but i would guess strength of schedule comes into play.

I agree 100%. The tougher they can make the schedule, the better.

Too many away games. Should have only scheduled non-conference with teams willing to do a 1 for 1, like I'm guessing UMD was. I'd rather see some 1 for 1's with some ECAC teams like RPI, St. Lawrence, Clarkson, or even a team like Niagara than giving up home dates to travel 2 for 1's to ****ing Michigan.

Re: Michigan Tech 2012-13 Season II - Beware of Huskies in the Spoiler Role...

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Institution is looking at all this realignment and the non-con games as a chance to identify more with schools east of Lake Michigan and, no matter how difficult and silly this may be, get mentioned in the lower peninsula's media more often.

Re: Michigan Tech 2012-13 Season II - Beware of Huskies in the Spoiler Role...

The home-home with NMU is fine it's been done before and I'm cool with it. I like seeing two rinks in two nights, even if I've seen both of them many times - just changes things up. Many other teams do it when they have closer teams to play, especially out East. You also see the MN schools do it quite frequently.

If UAF is willing to be flexible with the scheduling of their games with MTU that would be awesome. I'm already thinking seriously about making that trip and if they can shorten it by a day and even break up the hockey that makes it even more appealing to a visiting fan. Now the real question will be where to eat on Thanksgiving day and will they be serving turkey, orca, baby seal, or moose up there?

That looks an awful lot like the typical start to the NMU schedule. It will definetly help the PWR. If you steamroll a crappy EZAC team, that isn't going to really help. Even losing to NoDak will be an improvement to your PWR (potentially)

It will be interesting to see how the PWR shakes out next season. I don't think it's going to benefit the NCHC like they think it will.

I don't have a problem with the schedule overall, just think that we get 8-10 NC games, 2 with GLI so that leaves 6-8 each year. In a year with 8, I would think we shouldn't have two 2for1s, a 1for0 and a 1for1. We should try to do a max of two 2for1s/1for0s and then have two 1for1s. If that means one of the series needs to be with a ECAC team, so be it. Ramp up the "Engineers" rivalry or start doing what DU/CC do and have Union/RPI come and play each team once, then go out to New York and play each team once...or do it with StL and Clarkson.

In other news, I just finished interviewing Mike Neville as part of this season's "Future Huskies" series, hopefully get that typed up and posted soon.

Re: Michigan Tech 2012-13 Season II - Beware of Huskies in the Spoiler Role...

I was just looking at home attendance figures for this year in the WCHA. They break down like this: % of capacity and the team's number of home dates.
1. North Dakota---- 101% 18 games
2. Minnesota------- 99.5% 20 games
3. C.C.---------------95% 19 games
4. UMD---------------94% 18 games
5. Denver------------90.4% 21 games
6. SCSU--------------78.5% 20 games
7.Minn. St------------78.3% 18 games
8. Bemidji------------73.8% 18 games
9. MTU----------------73.3% 16 games
10.Wisconsin----------62.7% 19 games
11.UAA----------------44% 17 games
12.Nebraska/Omaha--43.4% 18 games

Tech's average attend. over the last 5 years:
08-09---2463
09-10---2164
10-11---2345
11-12---2898
12-13---3078
Attendance at our games is on the rise.
Some of the figures above are kind of suprising, especially the Wis. numbers. Anybody have thoughts on how numbers will be next year with the new leagues forming? Will our numbers continue to rise without the bigger schools coming to town. I personally feel they will go up (as long as ticket prices remain steady). I wasn't sure to start a new thread or just discuss in here. What is your opinion?
Found the figures on the main page in the quick links.

interesting. My personal opinion is that whether it's a big time team or not is overblown, but that it might make some difference in a few cases. more of a factor is the timing,( and of course winning) for instance if you have Michigan during break no one will be there relatively speaking. overall I think we will see a Bump of at least 10% next year, if not more.

Wisconsin fans are pretty fickle. A couple years of not being a top three team and suddenly hockey isn't a hot ticket in Madison. This past weekend they had to move their games to the Alliant due to WIAA events in the Kohl center. Last weekend of the season, battling for home ice, against the 1st place team who was trying to clinch the league title and they couldn't even break 10k for the both games combined. Pretty sad if you ask me. Tech averaging 3k for the season is very good in my opinion. Assuming there were about 2500 paid admissions each game, that's over $500k in revenue.

Badgers last two home games:
Friday, March 8, 2013 at Alliant Energy Center Coliseum (Attendance: 3,863)
Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Alliant Energy Center Coliseum (Attendance: 5,781)

I think attendance goes up a bit more again next year. I think it's all about our start, if we struggle in our early game son the road and come home with a not great record it could hurt some, but overall a winning team will improve attendance more than the name of the visiting team.

Some impressive stats being thrown out on twitter these last few days. I didn't realize our PP has improved so much since Jan 1. We'll need some PP goals this weekend to stay in it.
