Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

Mel's postgame thoughts:
Thought we had a good weekend, even last night we took it to them in the 3rd
We ask that the players prepare themselves, lay it on the line and the team did that
Managed the puck much better tonight, can't find too many guys that didn't have a good game
The guys were getting frustrated after the three posts, but we were creating chances
That SHG was the resiliency of the team, big goal from Baker
We've been able to generate point, we wanted more but it's tough playing at UND
Have to come home and take advantage
Wants to encourage every to come out next weekend to honor our seniors, Saturday night and Sunday at the MUB
The senior or laying it on the line, they're having a terrific year

As a Sioux fan who watched Tech play for the first time last night, I thought I'd congratulate Tech fans on what the team has accomplished so far this year. Although last night was not the result you wanted, that is a team that will play with (and beat) anybody. Any serious college hockey fan is aware of Tech's great tradition, and your program has always gotten a lot of respect because of it--even through what has been a lot of difficult years. I recall watching Tech teams come to UND in the 70s, and those teams were big, fast, and skillled. I can't wish you a win tonight or any night you play the Sioux, but congratulations--that is a fine hockey team you have.

And coming from a school with rigorous academic requirements has to make your hockey success even more satisfying.
Many thanks for the kind words! We Husky fans have been clinging to the past while suffering through three decades of bad hockey. Now that Mel has arrived, I agree with you that Tech can skate with any team in the country. I believe we're just a couple of key players away from being consistently great. Can you imagine the '74 team without the great combo of Zuke and Lyle? Anyway, it's a shame you guys are leaving the WCHA. We will miss playing the Fighting Sioux...

big John Scott for the win last night!

I did the Sioux Sports what-if calculator and it looks we might be heading back to Grand Forks in the 6/7 matchup

That would be fun. Those were very good games this weekend. Clean but hard-fought.

But there are a bunch of teams I'd rather see the Sioux play. I don't think anybody wants Tech this year.

Earlier in the season we talked about what it would take to finish 6th or better. In the past getting 50% of the available points (28) seemed to be the magic number, but it really looks like it will take 30 for Tech to get home ice due to tie breakers and a six teams already with 27pts and they all have four games left. The one positive that we have this year is that Tech has played well against all the top teams even if it didn't always mean wins. I don't think anyone wants Tech in the first round whether it is home or road.

I really enjoyed the trip to UND on Friday. Nice rink, but the fans sit on their hands all game long. A bus load of 50 Misfits could make that rink JMSIA-West. The have a one word cheer of "SCORING" after each goal and that is all they do. The only noise in the building is piped in stereo music. Pretty poor showing for a "hockey school" in my opinion. Oh yeah and the band plays "In Heaven there is no beer..." at least once per period.

I think UND will be higher than 6th. Imho it's either CC or a rematch with UNO, but in either case the odds go way up for us if we are at home.
Anyone know what's up with Brown and Licktieg?

Good write up in the other thread. Never been there for a college game but have seen the rink off season for hockey.

Brown is likely done for the season, likely surgery after separating his shoulder. Licktieg, I think he hurt his knee in practice but don't remember for sure.

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

So here is a quick synopsis of the mel show, from memory.
Mel felt like we played 5 periods well this last week, the second on friday being the exception. Controlled play a lot and were competitive in their building. The penalties hurt on friday. We played better saturday, with more urgency. Felt like we had our chances both nights.
Mel feels like you never know what will happen playoff wise and so he is not writing off home ice at all. Some discussion of teams ahead of us.

Said we need to improve the pp and that we stood around too much during it.

Very little said about this weeks opponent. A lot of time on the seniors and the activities for senior night, the promotions for this weekend, 1/2 price tickets for everyone, and the awards buffett sunday at noon at the mub, Plus the luncheon on friday. Said the seniors feel like they have some unfinished business going forward. Mentioned how well certain players were playing.

Did not mention injuries either. Gave some tickets away. There were no questions this week.

Personally I think we get slightly better every week and this week was no exception. It's very gratifying to have a team in Houghton that is actually relevant for a change. I'm very impressed with how the seniors have performed lately and can't wait for the next few games as I think it will be our best of the year. Did anyone notice how unhappy the und crowd was on friday when we scored with like 8 seconds left in the first. They almost booed. Also did he move the johnstone line up to be the number two line? Seems like he did.

These are both really interesting ideas, especially the Hockey 101. The Russian students might be very good participants, and I believe that China is starting to develop a hockey culture too in the wake of the Olympics there. And, perhaps Jujhar Khaira will bring some Indian students into the arena to get to know the sport?

Does seem a little silly to do Hockey 101 for the last home games of the regular season though doesn't it?

Very. :p

This isn't some sort of preview weekend, is it? That's when it would make sense to have a hockey clinic for new students, international and otherwise.

ESPN's Pardon The Interruption just did a clip on the John Scott/Derek Dorsett fight. Kornheiser was ripping Scott, and Wilbon was defending Scott. :D

It was comical to see, no wonder he was laughing in the box. LOL

They really do need to teach the sport. If they base it on what many learn from downstate Michigan (where a majority of the students come from) they don't know much.

Yeah it does, but at least they're trying somethig new. But yeah, it's odd that it took all season to try things like this.

Michigan Tech Board of Control to approve a $1.95 million replacement of the ice plant and rink slab this week. #mtuhky http://www.admin.mtu.edu/admin/boc/Agenda_022312.pdf

Tweet by Tech Hockey Guide today. Two things out of that PDF. It's too bad we have to spend $1.95M on a maintenance, I would've hoped it could be something to improve the fan experience. The other is, I see Carl Dassbach retired, I had that guy once and I still remember a few odd things he said during class.

"My relationship with the university and your relationship with the university are completely different. Tech pays me, and I get to park next to the building. You pay Tech, and they stick your car all the way out in bumfcuk Egypt."

Obviously much funnier when the infamous 'Lot R' was still around.
