Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Davis Payne has been fired by the St. Louis Blues.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Bummer for Payne, he showed a lot of promise with the Blues.

There was some talk in the Mankato v Tech thread about future WCHA playoffs. One suggestion with 9 teams was a #1 seed bye, but I don't see that happening. I think the #1 team would want a minimum of two more home games (which would certainly be good for the bottom line) as a reward for their great season.

Maybe seed the playoffs #1 vs UAH (or Moorehead or ????) with the #1 seed promised a spot at the Final 5 regardless of the game scores and then #2 v #9, #3 v #8, etc. Wasn't Mankato brought into the league that way (always the #10 seed) before they were a full member? This format also "rewards" the 5th place team with home ice playoffs as well.

Speaking of playoffs. here's a thought. remember that the nodaks objection to the wcha was that they didn't want to give money to the teams that were left out. so let's say they do not make it to the final five this year, will they return the money?

No, they'll take it and use it to retrofit the gas showers in the basement.

Ultimately, St. Louis was just too impatient to return to the playoffs. The Blues organization hasn't been very well managed for the past ten years or so. Hitch is a tough coach who emphasizes a slow, defense-first style of play better suited to the NHL of 2001 than the NHL of 2011, and has a reputation for developing poor relationships with younger players who don't respect him or the trap system. My bet is that he doesn't last more than three years in St. Louis.

Where does Davis Payne end up?

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Michigan Tech moved up one spot in the USCHO poll at 15th as well as sitting just outside the USA Today Poll at 16th.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Some notes from the Mel Pearson show. They went over the Mankato games as usual and then answered some questions from listeners.

1 - What's team's routine and difference between home/away games.

Mon-Wed are all the same. Home weeks on Thrs, light skate, no skate on Friday. Away weeks, travel on Thurs, practice Thurs when arriving and light skate Fri morning.

2 - How is recruiting?

Going great, really happy with where we are. Nation signing date is Wed, can talk about recruits next week when letters come in. Not many seniors, actively recruiting for next fall and years after that. Excited.

3 - What is situation with Chad Pietila?

Chad will be eligable for GLI, first opportunity to play. Looked good in practice, expect to help in goal scoring area. Skates well, makes good plays, he'll provide some offense.

4 - Is Fillion still planning on being a Tech player?

At this point yes, Mel thinks he's anxous to come here. Got is ACT/SAT reqmts in order, will be eligable for GLI, but will likely wait to play until schools starts.

5 - Status of Tommy Brown?

Tommy should be ready for GLI. Not sure if it will be any faster than that, started light workouts, he lost 9-10 lbs.

6 - Will the Europe trip continue in 4 years?

Think he's interested in it. Concerned with the long length of season starting in Aug, will look at it and see if there's a better time. Wish you could take your freshmen. We'll see, heard postive things about it.

7 - See any other European recruits like Holmber.

Do have connections over there. Would like to get a couple Fins, there were two Swedish players when Mel was here, if they're the right player they'll think about it.

8 - Thoughts on Davis Payne?

Davis is a great guy. Mel recruited Davis and then left for Michigan that summer.

Dirk said you can email anytime during the week and they'll put it in the Mel folder and ask the question on Monday morning. dj@themix93.com Send in your questions, it's a better show when we get Mel's insight on some things.

They'll talk about Anchorage next Monday, it'll be the team's first games on olympic size ice sheet this year.

That's one hell of a large appendix ;)

Didn't realize that about Fillion. Wonder what kind of player he is. Just my opinion but the biggest thing I heard him say was that we have to improve our play without the puck. AMEN.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

I think the #1 team would want a minimum of two more home games (which would certainly be good for the bottom line) as a reward for their great season.

I think that would depend on how much money the league asks for per game. In the CCHA, some of the smaller schools lose money hosting first round playoff games because the CCHA asks for a minimum money amount and not enough fans show up to break even. (I'm assuming they must, I don't have actual numbers)

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

If there is a nine team league, the playoffs are simple to figure out. First round is 8@1, 7@2, 6@3 and 5@4, with 9 playing golf. Final 4 at whatever is decided for a location, whether it is a campus site, or a neutral site. If you can't finish in the top 8 out of 9, then I have no problem with your season being over.

Article on C.J. Eick's commitment is done, just waiting for Flashy to approve it so all can see. It includes some quotes from former Huskies Assistant Coach Pat Mikesch.
