Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

I don't always drink Kool-aid, but when I do, I prefer Coach Pearson's:
Coach Pearson said:
"The first thing we did (Monday) was brought our team out on the ice after warmups, and asked them what Minnesota State's record was. They knew. And I asked them if I should be concerned about that. They said 'no.' I asked them why. They said it doesn't matter who we're playing. And that's exactly right," Pearson said.

"It doesn't matter if we're playing the Detroit Red Wings or a AAA Midget team, we have to set a standard of play, and that's how we have to play. It's not about the opponent - it's about our team - and we still have a lot to prove. As far as coaches, we won't let them have a letdown," he added.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

They had no intention of playing for Tech, so why bother recruiting them?

There are others on that team I know would like to play for Tech. They are in the upper part of the points for the team. Not sure if tMEL or Muck know or care.

Troll, I noticed you live in Howell; do you know the Lesperance kid at all? Any rumors? Some up here that know him say he would like to go to Northern. Is he worth a little extra recruiting effort or take him / leave him type? I guess he has family in Marquette?

Don't know him, never seen him play.

I'm a Calumet alum and I watched Erkkila and Junttila in action when Ben Johnson was on the team. They're small, fast guys....(particularly Erkkila who's scary fast), that benefitted from the overall strength of the CHS team. It's going to be a big step up for them to the WCHA. It's not meant to be a knock on either kid, but I don't think Mel would have been interested in them for Tech.....not yet at least. They'll need some USHL time to establish themselves. Even Ben Johnson (who I think Mel would have been interested in) is finding a lot of room for growth at Windsor. Jimmy Davis is another example of top Michigan high school talent that will take some time before he makes a mark at the next level. In short, it's very hard to know if a local high school kid is going places until they play tier1 or 2 Juniors.

You of all people say this? The guy is talking about Michigan...you hate michigan high school hockey. You should be applauding him for admitting that michigan HS hockey sucks and a player needs to play at the next level to know if they are worth anything.

Are you kidding me? Erkilla and Johnson mainly made this a strong Calumet team that others such as Juntilla benefitted from. Erkilla will be an impact DivI player and there's little doubt MTU would be interested in him if he was available.
Even Ben Johnson (who Mel was VERY interested in)

fixed your post

Word on the street that Kyle wasn't interested in him because he's "lazy" at times. He's compuwares best player.

I agree about them needing time in the USHL, but with the pressure from majors to get cash now that may be changing. Seen Johnson play last year and he was not ready for WCHA. The kid I'm talking about is fast and big but needs to fill out. Does really well in school, a great kid, and is hoping to put a year in maybe with TC. He has a connection to NMU but would rather play at Tech.

I wouldn't accuse Kyle of this, who has forgotten more about hockey than I'll ever know... but it brings to mind the fact that the best players I've ever seen in person often seemed to me, with limited viewing, not to be putting forth full effort. Even when it wasn't true. I think I get that impression because basically the really great ones make the game look easy. Just an observation, nothing to do with the prospect or coach in question.

Johnson is a senior this year so he didn't need to be ready for the WCHA this year if he had chosen the college route; he would have been at Fargo.

I thought he was referring to all high school players. Around here high school players make the jump, and some have little to no problem transitioning. Michigan HS players may not be able to, but that doesn't mean the same applies for all high school players.

he was talking about local players. There's a world of difference: MN HS is equivalent to MI AAA, I don't know where the 2nd tier plays in MN.

I just remembered: "All the children are above average" in MN.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to announce that 91 D Walker Hyland has committed to the Division 1 hockey program of the Michigan Tech Huskies. The Huskies play in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) of the NCAA.

“Walker is well deserving of this commitment. He has come in as a new player to the league and led by example,“ comments Head Coach/Assistant Director of Hockey Operations Paul Esdale.
“Walker will be a very good offensive defenseman in college hockey,”states Esdale.

Hyland will attend Michigan Tech University in the 2012-2013 season.

“I would like to thank the entire organization of the Bulldogs, my friends, family and former Coaches for supporting me throughout my hockey career,” said Hyland. “I would like to thank the Michigan Tech staff for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to having a successful season in Alberni,” said Hyland.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

anyone go to the lunch? get a lineup card?
edit: here it is
As for the Huskies, captain Brett Olson (4-6-10) leads the way, on the top line with Ryan Furne and Blake Pietila. Senior and assistant captain Jordan Baker (2-6-8) is next on the team in points, and will play the second straight week with Milos Gordic - who was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week - and Patrick McCadden. Tanner Kero will stay with Alex MacLeod and David Johnstone, while Jacob Johnstone will return to the lineup alongside Dennis Rix and Daniel Holmberg.
I don't think A. Pietila has sat down before now. Lickteig out as well.
