Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Completely off topic, but do we end up playing the Gophers in the Twin Cities next year? Never been to Mariucci for a game and would like to go before the WCHA implodes.... but I've business travel this year on that weekend.... :(

dont think so, sorry...if Wisconsin isn't coming back to Houghton next year, than if I understand the schedule, Minnesota will be making one final trip to Houghton next year and thats it.

That's what I thought, well... at least it's air travel... Looks like I'm missing my connecting flight on Saturday afternoon to Appleton from MSP :D

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Against Mankato, Alaska, and St. Lawrence, playing the way they have been playing Tech should be able to sweep at least one of those weekends, and hopefully do no less than sweep the other two. Winning 4 games out of 6 is great for Tech no matter who they're playing and winning five doesn't seem far-fetched.

In which case the Duluth series will start the portion of Tech's schedule that will determine if this is just an overachieving mediocre team, or a fairly good team. That series is going to be so awesome.
And not just because it will be third person all that week as well right?? ;)

Oh ****. That is going to be the ****show to end all ****shows.
You say that like it would be a Bad thing....

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

I would hope so too. I don't know how the other tourney's are going at this.

In the early years there were tons of Tech fans at the games, and either michigan or MSU in alternating years. The place was packed pretty much and Tech fans were more than 30% of the attendance. It was very loud just as the Dee was. After a while they figured out that when both MSU and U of M were included attendance was better and of course Tech started to drop off. I like that they include an eastern team and this year's GLI promises to be a real barn burner what with BC coming in. Last year with CC it just wasn't that good. The eastern schools have alumni here that use it as a chance for an alumni meeting and social, and they help attendance, cc didn't do that and I had already seen them in Houghton anyway. I don't know about the arrangement, but maybe the troll knows.

I don't have any idea on the financial arrangements. Anytime I ever ask about financials people in the Athletic Dept. always clam right up.

I will say a couple of years ago I was told that Tech makes very little, if anything at all, on the GLI. I was given the impression it would have to be a sell-out for Tech to make anything on the tourney. Tech probably gets some split of the total ticket sales. FSND has a contract for CCHA games and has a limit on the number of non-CCHA teams they can show each year. So again Tech isn't getting much out of that (most likely nothing at all).

Tech isn't involved with any of the marketing, that is all handled by Olympia Productions/ JLA.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

SG has scooped Heisenberg on our two newest recruits:

Chris Leibinger

The other is Walker Hyland, but I can't figure out where he is playing this year. He spent last year in the NAHL, splitting time between Texas and Fresno.

MLive Article on Leibinger from Summer 2010.

Bob and Mike Leibinger, now there are some names from the past.

Before we moved to Howell we lived up in the Saginaw area (Freeland). I had the "pleasure" of playing in the 30 and over league up there against Bob & Mike. Both hot heads that couldn't stay out of the penalty box.

Got in a nice fight with Mike, or to be more accurate I got a nice pummeling from him (he played college football, just a tad bit bigger than me!). A player on my team had scored. Mike didn't seem to like it much and after a good 5 Mississippi count came in and drilled the guy. I skated by and told him he should pick on someone who can actually skate. So he did. We lined up for the face-off, he didn't even try to win it, just made a bee-line straight to me. I got in one good punch that gave him a black eye and he got in about 50 to the back and side of my head. It was like something straight out of "Slap Shot." It went to a league review board and he got a 12 game suspension out of it. Plus when the suspension was up he had to go before the board for a hearing to get admitted back into the league.

I can only hope the kid is a whole lot brighter than his old man!

the good ol' days... ask Tyler's grampa about the time he ran up the bleachers in his skates to go after a heckler. Or maybe that was his brother...

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Yeah, should make for an interesting reunion someday up in the suite at the GLI. Mike L. running across the room to jump me from behind. In between punches the conversation will be....."Hey what's up?" "How ya doing?" "Not bad" "Hey just like the old days..eh"

I'll mention that the next time I get a chance to talk to him. Can't wait to hear what the response will be.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

The GLI's only goal is to get Michigan and State in the championship game. When was the last year that those two teams matched up as one of the opening games? We'll know Tech has a substantial fan base at the GLI when Tech gets to play the invite team in the opening game.

Troll, I noticed you live in Howell; do you know the Lesperance kid at all? Any rumors? Some up here that know him say he would like to go to Northern. Is he worth a little extra recruiting effort or take him / leave him type? I guess he has family in Marquette?

You need to read between the lines more of some of the posts in here...give it another week and you might have an answer.

This is 5th hand Suomi Cafe kahvi juoru but a statement was apparently made to the dad of a local midget player something to the affect that "tell Walt he would like to play there"; that is the only reason I am questioning him coming to Tech. If the kid is worth going after I hope they are talking to him. Hate to be playing against him if he is any good.

Based on your earlier post below; does he have family here now? (Besides his brother going to school)

While on the Keweenaw connections, one set of his grandparents are both from the Keweenaw.

I don't know about you but I would much rather Tech play State in the first round this year then the invite team.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

They had no intention of playing for Tech, so why bother recruiting them?

(I probably shouldn't call L'Esperance a "local" if he has closer ties to Marquette)
I knew Erkkila was committed there, but not that Junttila was. And this is the first I heard of an offer to L'Esperance. And I didn't know they wouldn't consider Tech, if that's the case.

At least one of sounds like his allegiance was to NMU anyway.
